Survey says that casual games are bringing families together photo

Can a Wii fix your broken family? Are casual games good for everyone?

In a recent survey polling 7,500 casual gaming adults, about a third had children or grandchildren who played casual games in their home, and 80 percent of them play the games along with these children. Gamespot says that 92 percent of these people think that playing these games with their families helps bridge the generation gap and aids in bonding.

The same survey shows that 70 percent felt that these games have some educational value, and 68 percent thought that they somehow improved their dexterity and coordination.

Psychologist Carl Arinoldo, author of Smart Parenting, commented, "Casual games span generations and genders in ways that traditional 'hardcore' video games never have... Casual games seem to promote more of a cooperative 'let's work on this together' type of atmosphere, as opposed to an aggressive, interpersonal competitive environment."

It's nice to see some positive news about video games for a change. If Wii Play can get grandma and her surly grandson talking and playing together, that's great, but don't expect him to continue playing nice if grandma wins one too many rounds.

Too bad there's not more grandparents like Old Grandma Hardcore.

Yea these feel good stories will go away once surely grandson shoves kindly grandmother off the balance board because she keeps beating him and "Balance: The Game" then the true violence of acts of balancing will come to the fore front and no one will be allowed to balance anymore. We'll all just have to wobble everywhere we go because balancing causes violence and its all because a family got brought together and some kid angry kid pushed his grandma.

That got out of hand.

I always wondered if I was the only one with that retarded God of War II shirt.

It has a giant Kratos head on the back. It's stupid.

The Wii will fail. It will peak when Mario Galaxy comes out. After that it's all downhill. Why you ask? Because Nintendo takes 3 to 4 years to make games. Especially important sequels. Meanwhile will get tons of lame third party games, especially mini games. The Wii will start to decline in popularity and be called the new Gamecube.

Jack Thompson wants to ban Metroid Prime 3. He says it's a roll into a ball simulator. Thousands of kids across the nation have been rolling themselves up into balls. Some have fallen into wells. Thanks Metroid Prime series for turning my kids into humans balls of terror! Why!? Why?! Why?!

It's true. My family has been known to get together from time to time and play Wii. Nintendo was smart about releasing Wii right before Thanksgiving last year because people who got Wii's on launch were no doubt gonna bring Wii's over to Thanksgiving dinner. After my older brother and older sister played my Wii they both got one. Grandma was happy.

Awww damn, its just one step closer to having to listen to the older generation whine about stuff, if this trend continues it wont be long before Granny complains and trash talks just like Jr while playing Halo 3, or some other future game over the internet, Thanks a lot Wii, double the whiny people, thanks!

I love casual games for that reason. My mom and dad have never understood the whole gaming thing, so its awsome when they ask to play wii sports or something along those lines.

I shared my Wii with my family for about 2 weeks with nightly bowling games till the fam didn't want to watch me play. So I took it away to my cave. However, during that time my 96 yr old gram actually played a game of bowling. Unfortunately, thats probably her first and last video game experience.( she had a minor stroke and lost all short term memory, so any game would be a first and then forgotten the next day). But now they want to play it again months later. Oh well , I haven't touched it since Paper Mario.

My parents have never shown much interest in video games. Although, my dad used to be a big Super Mario Brothers gamer back when it first came out. With the Wii, they enjoy using the Photo and Mii Channel and once in a while they'll play Wii Sports too.

The only three games my sister likes are Super Mario Brothers, Mario Kart 64 and Wii Sports. She's spent the most time playing Wii Sports. She and her boyfriend and I play Wii Sports about every two weeks or so. I'll get more of my family members to try it out during Thanksgiving.

My family won't become new Nintendo customers, but at least the Wii has gotten my family a smaller step closer to enjoying a video game system and the other features it has to offer.

The success of Wii seems to be grating on many fanboys teeth, but it commendable of Nintendo to be where they are. They've connected with the casuals and more or less won this current generation. Their games are good and they are actually making shitloads of profit. That's what the games industry is all about, so get used to them being top dog. Bringing families together to play, is another damn good achievement for the industry.

Orionsaint, you are living in a dreamland. In 2008 Wii games online start to pick up pace with Mario Kart Online. Mario Galaxy is just the tip of the iceberg. Mario Kart is a game that will get many Wii owners online, next to Medal of Honour Heroes, Fifa and Pro Evo 08. Nintendo servers are gonna be real busy.
