Surprise: Wii wins December, DS ranked second photo

Alert: Nintendo hardware rocked December, just like its software did, according to the NPD Group.

Glaucoma or not, Grandma honed in on the Wii with her deal-seeking vision during the month of December. Nintendo’s little white casual console sold 3.81M units, while the publisher’s handheld did a ridiculous 3.31M units -- a point punctuated by its domination of the PSP, which sold 654.7K units.

Sony probably has something to boast about: the PS3 sold around 1.36M units -- in contrast, the PS2 did 333.2K -- while Microsoft’s console barely lagged behind at 1.31M units sold.

  • Wii -- 3.81M
  • Nintendo DS -- 3.31M
  • PS3 -- 1.36
  • Xbox 360 -- 1.31M
  • PSP -- 654.7K
  • PS2 -- 333.2K

This is every month -- but who doesn’t have a Nintendo DS by now? Goodness.

You know who´s pissed right now?

3rd parties.

Because they cry, call Nintendo names, say they will never work with the big N again...

But deep inside they know they´re losing money... that almost 4mil new Wii were sold this christmas... and they dont have a single game to milk that cow.

How sad.

3.8 million worldwide in a 5 week span.

NPD is NA only, right?

Regardless, good for them. I think they needed that victory over at their HQ.

Man the wii is such a gimmick. It held a fan base for around 3 years and still has sales. Such a gimmick.

This is a bunch of fucking horseshit. 3rd parties aren't crying their eyes out because you know what? Almost every game flops on the Wii except for Mario and Zelda. Only Nintendo-made games really sell.

I'm tired of this sucking up. The wii has done nothing but split consumers into two groups. HD-era hardcore and I'll-play-once-a-month casuals. What has the Wii done for HD gaming? Third parties know that the real cash is in the HD consoles. Hell, I own over 30 games most of which I bought at full MSRP.

And yeah the word "gimmick" still applies because the attachment rate is low and average user-activity per month is even lower.

@ The RPGist You can't assume that because one thing works for you, it will work for everyone else. I used to be a graphis whore but stopping caring about that way before I got a wii. I have a 360 and I barely play it anymore since I also stopped caring about achievements. As long as the game is fun and cheap, I'll get it i.e. RE4 wii, which I never played since I didn't own a GC nor a PS2.

I'm glad that there is an alternative to the "graphics are God" crowd, and I'm glad that the Wii is doing so well. Nintendo took a huge gamble, it payed off, and lots of gamers are butthurt because the industry is becoming more diverse, and they don't like it. None of those 3.81million consoles came home with me, but one will soon.

Wow, some people sure are jealous of Nintendo's success... and I'm not talking about Sony or Microsoft.

There are some good reasons why some third-party games have flopped. From picky gamers toor silly design choices, lazy developers and cheap publishers.

MadWorld is a good game but it's length was ridiculously short and it offered little to no replay value. Unfortunately, its unique visual style seemed to be quite a turn off to a lot of gamers.

No one wanted an on-rails FPS Dead Space game. As good as Dark Side Chronicles is, people have grown tired of the on-rails FPS with 3 horror on-rails FPS gamescoming out in 2009 alone. The Conduit bombed because it didn't live up to the hype. What game developed by a small Japanese game company like Marvelous or XSEEDs has managaed to have any of their games sell well on any of the three home consoles ? Do you really expect a game like Fragile Dreams to sell more than 300k copies world wide?

No More Heroes managed to sell quite well despite the fact that Ubisoft failed to market it. I bet the sequel will sell better even though it most likely won't have a tv commercial or any real marketing effort put forth by Ubisoft for its North American release later this month. Other games like de Blob managed to sell even better than No More Heroes.

It's unfortunate that there's a lot of good games but they happen to be niche so their sales are pretty much destined to be low such as Sin & Punishment 2, Muraamsa, A Boy & His Blob and Zack & Wiki to name a few.

Clearly, the Wii userbase is a picky and trick bunch of gamers so much of the blame falls on them as well. Nintendo games sell because Nintendo knows what its fan and expanded audience gamers mostly want and they generally due the best job of promoting their games when compared to any third-party Wii developer.

If Modern Warfare 2 were to have been built from the ground up for the Wii you can bet your ass that it would have sold over a million copies. The problem is Activision isn't willing to do that for reasons that are both understandable and silly. If I'm not mistkane, every Call of Duty game has sold over a million copies on the Wii and they've all practically been watered down ports.

first off, money is money. when someone sells 7m units in 1 territory and you got nothing to show for it, you would cry. especially when studios are laying people off/closing down at an alarming rate due to massive losses from HD projects.
now let's see what HD consoles brought to the table... overpriced DLC/DLC on the disc/brown/red/interactive movies and a whole slew of other bullshit.

MSRP? over 30?? the 2k being laid off next month must thank you

"Man the wii is such a gimmick. It held a fan base for around 3 years and still has sales. Such a gimmick."

So if the Wii is a gimmick, than what's project Natal, and the Sony Fairy Wand? Everything console has to have a gimmick and lets face it, the HD gimmick is just not enough for the 360/PS3. That's they're bringing out their own motion controllers this year, but it might be too little too late.

Lets give Nintendo the credit that they deserves. For anyone to sell that many consoles in a single month, needs a round of applauses. People always talk about taking gaming to a mainstream level, well thanks to Nintendo that's happening and at the very least the Wii/DS are mainstream accepted now.

@ Third-party comments

Oh yes because its Nintendo's fault that they put their B-team on the Wii and expect sales just because the Wii is high selling.

Any person who blames the Wii for their OWN OBVIOUS FAULTS are morons and should be ignored. When people actual analysis the third-party software that major developers put on the Wii it is obvious to see why it isn't selling. Rail shooters and FF spin offs, ya totally great software there third-parties.

If SF4 was on the Wii it would have sold well, but they didn't put it on the Wii instead they put crappy team-B projects on there and they are crying?

Seriously the third-party rants from idiots who dislike Nintendo's ownage of the video game market is getting old.

Sony must be mighty pissed about that PSP result. And the continue success of the Wii doesn't shock me - overprotective parents are on the rise, so the Wii console (as long as they don't buy MadWorld) will also rise. It's funny too because this generation of parents are meant to be more skeptical towards gimmicks that Nintendo dishes out in spades.

the power of the wii is you have to have one to know it's not that good, because everytime you go to a friend who has a wii it's fun to play together. So you go get one and discover that alone it's boring and you should have got something else.

I have friends that are happy with just playing Rockband and Mario stuff, they're happy with a game every 6 month...

i need a game every two week.

I dont have a DS because Im now waiting for the sexy as fook LL to get released. Poor PSP, I use mine a lot but have had the 3000 model since launch. The Go is just too tiny so I never upgraded.

@Benus - My Wii is manily used for Rock Band lol I have more Virtual Console games than Xbox Live Arcade though, so there is that too.

Screw the haters lol, Nintendo kickin booty again is always nice to see, and the PS3 is playing catch up quicker than I thought.

Bullshit. If anything the Wii has started beating at the wall between "casual" and "hardcore" gaming. There is no solid definition of either term.

What difference does it make what kind of games a person likes?

@3rd party comments: Compare Silent Hill Shattered Memories to any of the so called AAA 3rd party games on the Wii and you'll see the burning truth with your own eyes, it's not that the Wii sucks, is that 3rd party game development on the Wii as been pathetic (i'm looking at you Capcom/Spyborgs) and when they don't sell they have no option than to go back to the usual "only Nintendo games sell on the Wii". Is SH:SM flawless? hell no, but it certainly goes the distance in making an effort to bring a good product unlike other games.

Guess it's only human to blame someone else than admit "we just tried to make piles of money with half-assed games and got our balls handed to us as anyone with 2 working braincells would have deduced it would happen".

I like that the Wii keeps selling, it means Nintendo keeps filling their pockets while these 3rd parties throwing crap software at the Wii can only writhe in pain for not doing things right. Maybe they'll learn or maybe they'll keep licking their wounds while blaming others for their own mistakes.

The Wii has 73 million sellers, and 51 of them are from 3rd Party's. So why the hell are so many people saying that 3rd Party games don't sell on the Wii? It might not all be the games that want to be selling, but lots of games are still selling on the Wii either way. If the 3rd Party's want more sales on the Wii, than all they need to do is step up the support for it.

Start making some AAA games for the system and start marketing them as much as they do for the 360/PS3. The development cost on the Wii are cheaper, yet 3rd Party's still put even less money into Wii development, and marketing. I just don't get why? Sometimes I wonder if 3rd Party even really want to succeed on the Wii, because if they do, than why are they going about it the wrong way so much?

I quite honestly can't see why the Wii would be selling very well at all as it stands right now. It would be a different story if there were games like Twilight Princess, Metroid, Brawl.. You know, more important titles.

All I've been seeing lately are shitty little games with "CARNIVAL GAME PACKS" or "FUN SPORTS MINIGAMES" flying out the wazoo. I'm sick of Wii titles that are nothing but little minigame collections. I am excited about the mysterious new Zelda game that's supposed to be coming out, but there honestly haven't been any games for the Wii for a while that would be enough hype to convince me to buy one, had I not already had a Wii for a while.
