Surprise: Valve thinks PS3 is too hard to develop for photo

The reason Valve Software doesn’t develop games for the PlayStation 3 is simple: the studio doesn’t like tricky hardware. The stance -- legitimate or not -- has been documented by bloggers since the Internet started in the mid-1920s (shortly after Alexander the Great sacked Coruscant). Still, it’s fun to pull the lion’s tail. The beast responds differently every time.

Thus Loot-Ninja (spotted by Kotaku) asked Valve designer Tom Leonard why Valve doesn’t develop for Sony Computer Entertainment’s shiny black console.

“The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward,” Leonard said. “We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform.”

“[...] I didn't come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun.”

Whoa -- that's a killer response. But it only makes us wonder how Valve really feels about the hardware. We should probably ask.

The image is taken from Jim's article, "Wah, Wah, Wah, Left 4 Dead 2." It's a brilliant read.

Valve = :crybaby:

Seriously, as shallow as L4D 1 was, you'd think they'd have the time to learn how to work on the PS3. L4D was a seriously overrated game for the cost, so PS3 owners weren't really missing out.

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHA! Are you fucking kidding me? How can companies like Free Radical Design develop a game like Haze for the PS3 and Codemasters can put out shit like Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, but Valve can't put one stinking game on the PS3? Uh oh, here it comes!

To which the interviewer's response should have been: "But everyone else manages..." What a cop out. It's obviously more "straightforward" to make L4D2 than it is to make HL2:Episode 3 as well. Lazy bastards.

valve is the laziest most over hyped game company ever.
it takes them 10 years to make terrible games. Also who's actually excited for L4d2 its exactly the same as the first one.

Wow. I have the exact opposite opinion of your generic, avatarless self. Valve and Blizzard are two of the few companies I would trust my babies with. Just about everything they make manages to be fantastic.
Though the PS3 thing is kinda funny.

Really Golden avatar? What's so hard to understand about a VIDEO GAME company not wanting to make games for a console? Hmmm, that is a tricky one. It's like they're (valve) finding a nice way of saying, "we suck, deal with it." If that works for you, that's completely fine, but to me, that is the laziest, and downright dumbest cop out I've ever heard in my entire life.

To me it reads that they'd rather spend their time creating fun experiences than learning new architecture. It's their prerogative- I don't see what the big deal is.

I don't think it makes them lazy if the want to focus and what they enjoy. It's not worth the effort for them. Maybe one day it will but who cares.

Do you actually believe anything you just said, or are you really just that bitter? The PS3 platform is obviously a market they are not interested in pursuing. It's a business decision. The obviously don't see it as a worthwhile investment. Should they start developing for the DS and the PSP or the Macintosh or Linux environments? There's money to be made there, but I suppose, using your logic, that they are just too damn lazy to do any such thing.

Uh-oh...Watch all the PS3reaks come out and diss Valve, and pretend Valve make shitty games, and that Valve are a shitty Dev, just becuase Valve hurt their PS3eelings.

No need to be churlish. Valve are awesome, and responsible for some of gamings highest points. Just because you can't get L4D on PS3 does not make it a shitty game, ok? Just like Kz2 not being on Xbox doesn't make that a shitty game.

Valve's decision to not work with the PS3 may come across as a cop-out, indeed may even be a cop-out, but that does not make their body of work shit.

Christ, PS3reaks are so fucking childish, and they have the gall to call the Xbox community immature.

lol Oh and another thing. Uncharted2, Infamous, Killzon2, GOW3, Heavenly Rain, The Last Guardian > anything Valve creates.

The reason why Valve wants to stay in their comfort zones is because it cost alot of money to develop for a new system thats different from a PC. They want to keep their profit margin high.

A: Valve doesn't know how to program for PS3. (unlikely)
B: Valve is LAzy and doesn't want to. (Maybe)
C: MS Pays them money under the table to keep it on a system that is closly tied to a MS product (xbox or operating system.) (Interesting theory but highly influenced by fanboism tendancies)
D: Games from Valve should be played on a PC anyways and if you play them on a console you are either stupid or own a mac(totally acceptable).

Valve is a PC game developer. One of the few that still profits in its home platform and the only reason they even considered 360 released is because how easy it is to port from one to another, it really is just a few clicks. Sure L4D also sold 2M on the 360 but if it gave them too much trouble porting, they wouldn't do it.

Why is there never a stink when a someone clearly favours the PS3? As far as I'm concerned, Sony's lucky developers are so madly in love with them they take their crap in stride. Does anyone honestly think that the PS3 couldn't possibly have pushed out equal or better graphics with a more powerful conventional architecture? Would've saved Sony's proprietary lovin' ass tons of money, and at the Cell's price they could've gotten something that looked a lot like the 360 but much more powerful. That would mean definitive hardware advantage that could be shown much quicker and would result in a faster development cycle etc. Sony are so busy making something that they can sell as proprietary hardware they consistently make things needlessly complicated for themselves and others. It's either poor, tunnel-vision business, or just really selfish. I understand how poorly "selfish" applies to a company but honestly, the games division needs to stop with proprietary hardware like the Cell. You aren't some general hardware division, you're the games division, and trying to stuff the PS3 with something you intend to sell around rather than giving it something that's best for Playstation is just a bad decision. The Cell's beginning to turn to boon, the 360 isn't blown away yet, and as far as I'm concerned, a processor so much more complicated turning out such marginally improved product after more than 2 and a half years is poorly designed. The Cell is supposed to be a tool and not an obstacle.

Does it make sense to make games for the PS3 if you don't want to bother with the development? Perhaps thats the real question. If enough PS3 owners also have Xbox 360's, then they will simply buy it on the other console. Your basically spending development time for gamers who don't own a PC capable of running the game, which L4D didn't have that crazy of requirements, and also don't own an Xbox 360. Which makes you wonder what they were doing between Xbox1/PS2 era and the release of the PS3 =/

Why waste time catering to such a small population?

Wait so the fact that the games turn out badly is proof that it's NOT hard to work on? Seriously man if a company doesn't want to develop on your choice of console because they think it will turn out badly don't complain. It's better than them lazily make game after game that's obviously worse.

@ChaosTeaCup - yeah, I honestly don't know what's up with that. The reason I'm bitching is simply because they make [i]awesome[i] games, and I don't own a 360, or an up-to-date gaming PC, so I'm shit out of luck. So, when you hear a game company that you like say that they don't want to put the effort into developing on a console because it's too hard, it kind of rubs me the wrong way. I would LOVE me some L4D on my PS3, that game looks sweet. But alas, I have to deal with a company that doesn't feel like stepping up their game. Oh well.

I don't think anyone truly believes that Valve's excuse is legitimate. What is questionable is the reason they give: that the PS3 architecture is too complex. Surely, when other developers can create decent PS3 games, why shouldn't Valve be able to as well? Valve's comment only serves to make them look inept, which I'm sure many of you would agree, just isn't true.

Sucks for people who don't own a 360 or a game-worthy PC, Valve makes good games. It would be nice if Valve would contract a studio to port the games a la The Orange Box, except hire someone who cares and won't just churn it out like EA.

Also, theres a lot of wharrgarble in these comments.

@Oh, and Skribble, I am not a fanboy for sony, trust me. I happened to get my PS3 as a gift, so that's what I play, and I've never been able to afford a 360. If I had the money and time, I would have all current gen consoles.

Ye gods, there truly are some of you that make me weep for the future of humanity. So they can't be arsed to fuck around with what they see as needlessly overcomplicated architecture? It's not a case of 'they can't figure it out' or 'their tech's out of date' or even 'they hate the PS3'. Valve are PRIMARILY PC developers - and always have been. If the PS3's hardware was as close to that groundbase as the 360's, then I've no doubt that they'd be doing stuff for Sony's beastie as well; seeing as it isn't, it makes sense for them to focus on what they know best.

Some of you really need to take the fanboy goggles off for five fucking minutes and THINK about the garbage you're spouting.

Valve is a great developer, I love their games (probably all of them) but I think:
1. They're too lazy to learn how to program to the cell platform (which is understable)
2. Microsoft is paying them zillions for the exclusivity (which is more than understandable)
3. They're Xbox 360 Fanboys (wait... wat?)
