Surprise, surprise: Bionic Commando to have achievements on the PS3

Surprise, surprise: Bionic Commando to have achievements on the PS3 photo
     Capcom

Speaking to Eurogamer, Ben Judd reassured the crew that Capcom was doing their best to make sure that PlayStation 3 owners wouldn't feel like they were left out in the cold, achievement wise, while playing Bionic Commando.

In order to mimic the reward system of the Xbox 360 (who may have borrowed from Insomniac, themselves), Bionic Commando is set to offer up a similar experience using Sony's own brand of achievements -- trophies. According to Judd, these will be unlockable by meeting such requirements as defeating a certain amount of enemies in a row, or performing other "mini-challenges," such as using the grapple to prove your acrobatic worth via back-to-back zip kicks.

However, Judd let it be known that behind all the Sci-Fi action of Bionic Commando is an underlying message and social commentary of sorts, involving man verses machine -- and Spencer's own self- reflection along the way. Yes, it sounds pretty deep to us to, but epic storylines are always a welcomed addition, right?

I'm still not sold on which version I plan on buying just yet (PS3/360), but if I were into the whole achievement thing -- that choice would now be a little bit harder to decide.

[Thanks, Adam!]

I have no idea why, but I just thought that pic should have something like "GET TO THE CHOP-AH!!" on it.

Showing off trophies in your "room" is a neat idea instead of a gamer score. Who knows how this will go until it hits the streets.

who didn't see THAT coming? i think pretty much every game that will come out from i don't know august forward will have acc's in ps3 and 360. i mean home's almost out, game's are starting to support it, i think developers already have on their hands what they need to start incorporating it, and they're gonna do it. personally i don't see the appeal of accomplishments, but a lot of ppl want them...so of course sony's gonna give them.

I hope they don't sacrifice any gameplay in order to tell their social commentary about man versus machine.

The original is XBLA and PSN exclusive. It has "ub3r grafx" yo!

I feel that having objects to look at instead of numbers creates less of a competition vibe...even though traditional sport teams compete for trophies, but they use points to determine who gets the trophies! Hmmm, maybe if we could see the achievements people got instead of just the numbers...

honestly I could care less for achievements, not my thing.

but this could start to put a foot in the door of all those xbox/ps3 players that prefer cross console games on xbox due to achievements.

I just wished they release home already, I want trophies from all the dead people I kill in MK2 in my VR-living room.

Microsoft took achievements to the next level, but I'd hardly say that they invented them. My hat goes off to MS though, as they definitely mastered them.

I agree with Gameboi, MS did clearly master them.

The article didn't say where they would be located though. I'm hoping with Home coming whenever it does, they were smart enough to develop an online, web component of Home. Kind of like what Microsoft does with xbox.com.

We'll we've already seen some of the trophies in home like that Loco Roco one so I would imagine they would be there.

I hate achievements because every time I play a game that doesn't have them it slightly feels like I'm wasting time. I get addicted to unlocking them and then they're all I think about when I play a game. Not only that but sometimes I play games differently just because I want the achievements in them. Like in Bioshock... I really wanted to harvest little sisters but I couldn't because then I would have 100 fewer points... points which should mean nothing... they represent so much.

Other PS3 games have had achievements, including the darkness. They just called them accomplishments. I'm not surprised, achievements are the biggest thing to come out of left field in this generation of games. And Sony would do anything to make their system seem more relevant.

It's funny that when they add something that apparently a lot of people request... instead of listening to the gamers it's copcatting..

oh well.. I have never once tried to get an achievement on 360 games nor looked at the ones i unlocked.. i just get them for doing normal gameplay i guess.

I can understand the lure of achievements, but for myself it just doesn't interest me that much. If they are there great, if not whatever, I'm not going to complain about it. For myself playing the game and having fun doing it is what really matters, not some achievement or trophy stuck there in cyberspace.

At least the sports teams that compete for trophies can, you know, actually touch them in real life. I would get a MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger rush of say bowling a 300 in real life rather that Wii sports.

MS method is not just the achievements but the gamerscore is increased and tracking your history of games too. You can see all of it online too and display your gamerscore around. I dunno if Home allows you to do any of that. And so far it's still outside of the game itself, meaning you have to launch another program really. If the game gets good ratings I'm still getting it on the 360

I'm with Holytheline completely. Games without achievements just lose a little magic now, and I kinda hate that that's the case.

Anyway, if these trophies will indeed link up to Home (is that still not done yet? I'm legit shocked) then good. Otherwise, I dunno if it's enough to topple the achievements on the 360.

Should be interesting though.

If I remember correctly, I got most (if not all) of those skill points in Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Man, what a game.

So does this mean that Home will be out by the time this game is released?

I prefer to play games with achievements over those that don't, hands down. I'm not even an achievement whore on 360, I just like being patted on the back for a job well done.

It's sort of why I have no incentive to play through Twilight Princess or finish Mario Galaxy on my Wii. It's just... not as satisfying without that virtual little icon of accomplishment.

Sad, but true.

I agree Home is long overdue, lets just hope they get it right and its not something really stupid, /crossesfingers. What I was hoping they would do is when you install Home that it would scan your save games and add something for at least finishing a game. It would give something extra to those PS3 fans jonesing for trophies.

NHL 97 on the sega genesis had achievements, so microsoft definitely isn't the first. I really like achievements, but it doesn't spoil the game for me at all. I'll usually play through the game once without looking at the achievement list, and if I like the game I'll play it again and go for whatever ones I missed. To me it just adds a little replay value to games and I have no problem with that.

While trophies are interesting, I feel like the Gamerscore works better. It's a simple number that you can display anywhere and show your total nerd-level. Trophies just seem a little too abstract and... stupid.

While achievements are not very interesting, I believe that trophies work a heck of a lot better. How often do you sit around looking at someone's score? I never do. That's only for you and your friends. Trophies are something you can invite someone over your "Home" and check out. I'd have used the word house but then you wouldn't get where I was going.
