Surprise: Nintendo thinks it did well during the holidays photo

Breaking: Nintendo believes it sold a lot of stuff during the holidays.

Ahead of the January NPD numbers, Nintendo tossed out a press release with its own sales estimates for the month of December. And as we gathered without looking at its contents, it appears as though Nintendo performed well.

The publisher believes that Wii sales exceeded 3 million units during the month, while the DS and DSi will “set a new all-time calendar-year US sales record” for handheld systems. On the software side, Nintendo is estimating that Super Mario Brothers Wii has almost reached 4 million lifetime sales in the US.

For the last few years Christmas has been all about giving Wiis, which is great by the way. We’d much rather have a few extra consoles in our closet than those knitted sweaters with bright green dinosaurs across the chest.

Somehow I think Nintendo is just saying that because they want others to believe they are doing ads good as they did last year. Sony and MS were the ones that most people I know bought from.

Oh Nintendo, when will you learn that we want Zelda, Metroid, and Mother games isntead of a bunch of Mario spinoffs and mini-games.

For some reason we had a shortage of New Super Mario Bros for Wii. This makes me think those rumors of them holding back Wii stock in past years was true.

Jesus, when we're in a depression, people want to play video games to get their minds off all the shit that's happening
When everything is fine and dandy, people want to play video games because they're bored.

What I want to see is how the steam sales sold.

of course nintendo did well this christmas, they only pretty much run the industry at this point. which is why it's so strange to hear about how many companies want to stop development on the system. to third parties: if you guys put the same amount of effort into the wii as you do with the hd consoles, you could get in on this gravy train.

What are you talking about ? If there's been any developer on the Wii that's provided the types of games fans want it has been Nintendo.

Nintendo's been the most consistent developer and publisher that's ofered a balanced amount of quality core and expanded audience games. They've even revived franchises like Excitebike, Sin & Punishment and Punch-Out!! for crying out loud.

Besides, Nintendo's already confirmed that there's new Zelda, Metroid and Pikmin projects in the works for the Wii. In addition, Retro Studios and Project Sora are working on new titles as well.

Forget about Mother. As great as that franchise is, Nintendo isn't likely going to show support for it any time soon. It's like how fans complain how Square isn't interested in remaking Final Fantasy 7.

Its over, Nintendo's finished.

Btw, when will someone on Podtoid buy a Wii or just bring in someone that doesn't hate Nintendo?

Yes but do you love your Wii? I mean everybody owns one.

What we need is to just have Holmes come on and rant about games nobody who's currently playing their uncool HD consoles has ever heard of for about an hour.

Hell we can turn it into a drinking game. Every time Holmes brings up a game no one, listeners and Podtoiders, has ever heard of we take a drink. It'll be a hit at parties.

"What are you talking about ? If there's been any developer on the Wii that's provided the types of games fans want it has been Nintendo."

Where's Mother 3? Why did they deny North America Fatal Frame 4? Why exercise games? Why have a Vitality sensor? Why is it that Nintendo has developed the most mini-game compilations? Where's our Star Fox? Where's our Kirby? F-Zero?

"Nintendo's been the most consistent developer and publisher that's ofered a balanced amount of quality core and expanded audience games. They've even revived franchises like Excitebike, Sin & Punishment and Punch-Out!! for crying out loud."

Referring to Punch-Out doesn't help. Punch-Out was a Wii-Ware title that was sold at full price. It was just a remake with upped graphics and variant modes. And as for Excitebike, and Sin & Punishment 2, they're Wii-ware titles. If Wii-Ware titles were the best thing the Wii had in 2009 then Nintendo really needs to get creative. It's time to stop milking Mario, Zelda, and Metroid and think up some new IPs.

Last thing we need is Holmes on the Podtoid. Getting his rants from time to time about how the Wii console is truly the indie rock scene of the gaming industry or his hilarious outrage at Sega when they said their Wii M rated initiative failed is amusing in small amounts. But give him an hour of power and by christ, it will be a bucket of fail. He can be cool but at times he acts a bit too much like the "Wii Want It All" cult that's been neglected.

I listen to Podtoid at work while cackling alone in my cubicle... drinking games don't fair well there. Thankfully, as an art monkey, nobody bothers me much either so anything else non-alcohol related, I likely won't get caught on...

I'm so sick of things being judged on how well they sell.
Britney spears sold a ton of albums too. Mariah Carey outsold Elvis. does that mean that either of those artists are actually good?
Because apparently it does.
The wii is horrible. The new super mario game is horrible. Graphics matter - and hopefully with the Sphere and Natal we'll finally see awesome games. I for one thought Re4 on the wii was handsdown one of the best gaming experiences ever! If I could get that control scheme on a Dead Rising, or a inFamous, I'd be one of hell of a happy camper. man I wish Nintendo would give its IPs to a real gaming company. Imagine if NaughtyDog made the new Zelda? baaaaaaaaah.

-disillusioned.

Yeah Nintendo is going to send out a press release to the media lying about their sales numbers, just to trick people into thinking they're doing well. You do realize that Nintendo is a publicly traded company and not just some happy magical fun time club right? So lets all just base the international sales of a billion dollar corporation on how many people that you personal know who bought other systems and not the Wii, because that really matters doesn't it? It must be nice to live in a fantasy world with no common sense, or logic!

People are stupid... Hence the Wii. Has that ridiculously forced motion control benefitted anything yet? All the best games on the system; The BEST games; Don't use it or just force it. I dare say all of them would be better with a controller in hand or at the very least just as good. I know some of the quarky party games and shooters (especially the shooters) are improved via wiimote, so it isn't without it's place, but it being the main focus and usually your only option is just retardiculous. But regardless everyone goes on and on about the innovation, I'm still looking for it myself. The graphics are bottom notch. I have an LCD HDTV and it looks like butt, even with upgraded AV cords. The bulk of the hardware is a joke. It's either a piece of shit that doesn't work or breaks in a week, a piece of plastic that only serves in making things more awkward, or even with good hardware peripherals they still hafta plug into the wiimote like it's one of those aliens from Avatar. The immersion that everyone goes on about is also overrated. It's just a glorified powerglove. The technology hasn't changed too much and it just about as accurate, why there isn't a true location calibration on the system is beyond me... I'm gonna cut off because I'm typing on an iPhone, but last case in point. While some of the games are awesome and I play them often they just don't fit on the system. What I'm sure will be the biggest example is Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Is anyone really gonna play this? Your best, easily accessable bet is the 'cube controller and we all know how good fighting games are on the cube controller. You can buy the overpriced arcade stick, but why is that the only option? Could this not seriously work on the xbox or ps3, everyone can cover for it and make any excuse, that was a dumb fuck idea and it will suffer in sales for it.
