It's not much of a secret that EA has enjoyed solid Dragon Age: Origins sales, but we didn't have a number on it until this afternoon. In a press release blasted after the jarring EA conference call, it was revealed the old-school RPG has sold over 3.2 million units according to EA estimates. That's, uh, a lot by most standards.
EA and BioWare are releasing a full-featured expansion for Origins this March and apparently whipping out some sort of new DA title in fiscal 2011. We'll try to figure out what the latter is while also taking stabs at what made so many people want to buy Origins. We're guessing it was Manson. Or the fact that the game rocked. Either way, we're happy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is what happens to a multiplatform title. ME2 would have sold three times more if it was on PS3 as well.
lol
That said if that many people enjoyed it good on them. It's better than alot of what tops the charts recently.
@whateverthismeanstoyou
I doubt it. I don't think the PS3 only crowd is that large.
Still, you have to figure they could have sold a considerable amount of copies if they'd have ported it. Question is, would they make more money doing that or taking a check from MS for being a 360 exclusive?
I don't even know about "considerable amount". Like Xzyliac, I don't think the PS3 only crowd is that large. If I decide to buy the PS3 version instead of buying the 360 version, Bioware hasn't gained an additional sale.
I felt the same way all the way up until I played it. It really is a great game.
@Xyliac:
Comparing it to KotOR is unfair.
Um.
The battle system really really needs less close up and more of a Baldur's Gate isometric feel or something. It was trying way too hard to be fast while being tactical and it just sucked due to controls and menus feeling and behaving really sluggish.
I'd give the game a C+, but like Mass Effect 1 [which too me was pretty messy execution too from the looks of it] I think the next game will be incredible and I do eagerly await it despite my lackluster experience with the first.
Harsh. But I know what you mean. I played through on the PS3 and it suffered with poor visuals in battle and bad menu/shortcut systems. Even for a berserker, 6 shortcuts wasn't enough. Also I had to leave the AI and tactics on default because it was the only way people would do things logically.
Triple the sales you say?
Normaly PS3 sales are slightly below 360 sales, not by much but still enough that crazy statements such as yours look fanboyish.
Shame ME2 isn't on the PS3, I can talk with one of my friends about DA:O but not ME2 which is a pain for both of us. Mostly him I would think.
And I don't get the KOTOR comparisons, considering all things. As far as BioWare RPGs, the only thing farther from KOTOR comparisons than DA:O would be Baldur's Gate, which would of been a more appropriate thing to compare it to.
Glad it sold well, though. Bioware do good work, most of the time.
Larger audience = more money and more people playing a great game.
It did significantly worse than 360/PC, and the worst. I don't think BioWaare is ruffling their features about minuscule ales from a port, nor doubt it's even worth the time and effort. Not to mention Microsoft developed ME1 and owns the rights for that game at least, and also has an exclusivity deal for the trilogy as stated by BioWare numerous times.
Tell you what. Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield, and every other shooter based in modern setting? They're all far more alike than any two Bioware titles (save KOTOR v. KOTOR2, of course) and I don't see you guys ragging on them.
It's like if you see party/squad based gameplay where you choose your decisions, it's automatically KOTOR. ME2/DA are great steps forward for gaming in storytelling, and while DA at least may have a few functional gameplay flaws, it told a great story with moral ambiguity; the only thing I actively hold against it is not using Tim Curry's voice more.
I would compare Dragon Age: Origin more like NWM but more action... At least on the PC Version.
