Surfer Girl: Mother/Earthbound series to hit US, possibly next year photo

Even after talking to the famed tipster Surfer Girl, we still don't know what to make of her. We do know that she says a lot of things that we like to hear, and on Christmas she said that the Mother/Earthbound series will come to the US, possibly sometime next year.

Listed as #2 in her December twenty-fifth things, SG says that the title will hit either the Nintendo Wii or DS, which makes total sense as Mother is a Nintendo series. 

Among other rumors/tips, we see that Team Ico is supposedly working on a couple more titles, and one is likened to Echochrome. Also, she says that Kane & Lynch 2 is still happening.

We've heard rumors that Earthbound is US bound for so long now that it's hard to believe anymore, so for now we'll stay positive and look to the lyrics of Earthbound's "Pollyana - I Believe in You" as a source of hope.

I believe the morning sun is always going to shine again, and

I believe a pot of gold waits at every rainbow's end

I believe in roses kissed with dew

Why shouldn't I believe the same in you? 

Hit the jump for the rest of Surfer Girl's predictions. 

1) SSX 5 is dead, rivalry between fall 2008 PS360 snowboarding titles of Montreal studios still existent.
2) The Mother/Earthbound series is coming to Wii and/or DS stateside, very possibly next year.
3) Team Ico is working on two titles (maybe three), one major and the other(s) smaller. The smaller one(s) is/are more like Echochrome and does/do not take place inside the Ico canon.
4) Kane & Lynch 2 is still happening.
5) Also to look forward to next year is "Shrek going to unprecedented video game territory." Using skills of deduction, it is either a music title or a quality title. It is fairly obvious that the latter is definite no, so it probably a musical title.
6) Even more exciting unprecedented occurrence in interactive entertainment is the release of a new Leisure Suit Larry title and a new Sex & the City titles in the same year for mobile communication tools, computing devices and other things.
7) A2M is working on Indiana Jones for people who cannot stand to play consoles with the number three in the name--DS/Wii/PS2/PSP.
8) EA's Wii Balance Board title ain't SSX.
9) Cyclomite is absolutely amazing.
10) When is Rage coming out?
Second half of 2009.

A 3d cell shaded could be really cool. I would be angry if Rage comes out in 09 because by that time there will be better shooters.

Oh man oh man oh man. Because Surfer Girl has said it, that means it's actually true this time, right?

Wait, Wii or DS? Why don't they just bring the damn GBA game that they already have made (but not translated) over?!

Or perhaps they're converting it to a DS game, a la Phoenix Wright? Ohh the speculation!

So, what's SG's track record for getting these things right? I haven't been keeping track, but my sense is that it's not very good. I'm not getting my hopes up until Nintendo announces it.

Go check out videos of Magical Starsign and think of how cool it would be to play Earthbound with a grahpic setup like that.

I'm extremely doubtful about Kane and Lynch 2. The game flopped, and cost Eidos a LOT of customer trust and loyalty. IO better be working on Hitman 5 or Freedom Fighters 2 if they know what's good for them. *shakes fist*

Grrza, her record is good enough to take notice, but not enough to get your hopes up. She DID accurately predict the Ghostbusters game a few weeks before the GameInformer debut was made.

This is what I want, Nintendo:


Mother 1 + 2 = 3 for DS. Make all of them ports, please!

Playing Mother 3 and not being able to understand the dialog really sucks. It's the only way I can play it now, and it still pretty fun, but so much of the appeal of the series is the ridiculous things told to you by NPCs. The game just has so much personality, which I am missing out on by playing it in Japanese.

If you read SurferGirl's Earthbound sentence, its horribly misleading and has people thinking she's predicting something truly unbelievable, being a new stateside Earthbound/Mother. The simplest explanation is almost always the correct one - Earthbound is coming to the Virtual Console. That's it.

There's no other reason Nintendo would release an Earthbound title outside of Japan - as painful as it is to say - other than the original because it costs so little to port a title to the VC and they just aren't willing to spend money on a game that may not sell enough to justify the time, energy and money put into it. If that sells a ton and gives the franchise viable legs, then I'd say the chances of seeing something new (even if its just to us) in the franchise coming over here (or out at all) goes up.

Fuck SurferGirl and her bullshit - she's just stirring up the bee's nest with this one for fun and not even attempting to produce 'accurate' rumors.

Earthbound 64 became Mother 3, and that's why the N64 version was never released. Check out this video for many reasons why a 3D Mother game should probably never be released. The series should stick to 2D.

@Variable Gear; that would be spectacular... and mini games!

@wannabepunktony; if it were for either, my guess would be Wii would result in a VC, but there is a huge market for it on the DS. The main thing I'm referencing here is the fact they are bringing Kirby Superstar to the DS; both would be games that the DS market would eat up and sell millions of copies of just in their nature.

It is coming for Virtual Console, that's not news. Based on those sales, they might bring out Mother 3 officially.

The coolest thing would be a Mother 1-3 pack on a DS cartridge. Not likely knowing Nintendo, but it'd be sweet.

Holy shit, I just got the best idea ever.

Bring Earthbound to VC
Bring Mother 1 to America on the VC (remember, they've already released TWO previously Japan only games in North America through the VC)
Bring me some motherfucking Mother 3 any way you can (maybe as a GBA game, as was its original form)
