Sure, why not: Games for Windows LIVE 3.0 is here photo

Now I know quite a few of you are perfectly fine with having Steam on your system and nothing else, but believe me when I say there are a group of people who are really into Games for Windows LIVE. This news -- even though they probably know about it already -- is for them.

The newest version of GFWL, version 3.0, brings in-game storefronts a la Rock Band, "roaming saved games and settings," and zero-day piracy protection for the developers. To me, this update seems to be more about getting new devs to support the service than anything else, which isn't a bad idea.

Read more about the features here, download the update by clicking this link, and try to keep the comments section semi-civil, just this once. Actually, feel free to post irrelevant and slightly immoral pictures, if you want. But don't tell old man Chester I said it was okay.

[Thanks, TheWeaponeer]

I installed GFWL so I could get the DLC for Fallout 3. All in all, I was much more impressed with the service that I expected, it just has next to nothing to offer at this point in time in terms of supported games.

Where's that guy's mouse? WTF is he even doing? He's just staring at a screenshot like a grinning idiot.

Is marketing even trying?

I see GFWL as more of a nuisance than anything. I already use Steam, and it's obnoxious having to use GFWL for SFIV when I also have Steam's community overlay. Furthermore, GFWL is very light on functionality, and you can't even buy games through it. Frankly, I'd rather buy games in the form that I play them. If a game installs, then I want it digitally. If I need to pop a disc in, then I want to own a physical product. That's why I'm such a huge fan of Steam. I'm gonna install the games, anyway, so why bother cluttering up my place with discs?

Hammersmith wins. XD XD XD

Steam is very good, MS will have a hard time competing with them no matter what they do. Never tried this program though, maybe I will. But my PC sucks for gaming anyway so probably not...

i'd be surprised if we don't see a merging of steam and gfwl within the next couple of years.

i'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing but i can very much see it happening.

@DeusPayne

As here, and as soon as I got them, I logged out to rip them into my "regular" FO3 data folders so I wouldn't have to log in everytime I wanted to use my savegames.

That said, if there's one thing I DO like about the system it's that achievements in that game count the same as achievements on a 360 Live account, so I can still get points without having to actually own a 360.

So much for the keyboard+mouse versus controller debate from Jim Sterling's article. Wayne Brady (Credit to Hammersmith) has shown us all that its keyboard+numpad for the win.

At the very least I have to get M$ credit; they haven't given up yet, and continue to update the service. Something not mentioned here is the new possibility that companies can tie game registration to your gamertag. I haven't figured out if this is good or bad yet.

I use GFWL when I absolutely have to, and not at all otherwise. Moo, I expect to see AMMO on there at some point. That would change my mind.

No I actually don't believe you that there are people really into GFWL.

I mean, how could you care about a product from a company who's primary interest is in destroying the platform it's on to promote their own?

I think it's funny that people talk shit about GFWL when it's basically the EXACT SAME THING as Xbox Live. It even shares achievements, friends, messages, etc. GFWL is pretty neat. I've only used it for Fallout 3 and I only use Steam for L4D but both of them have their strong points.

GFWL was never really my thing. Steam meets all my PC gaming needs. Fallout 3 comes bundled with it, much to my chagrin. However, you can't blame M$ for trying.

It's not that Games for Windows is so horrible, it's just that on PC it performs the same function as Steam, and Steam does it much better, due to being around much, much longer.

Why developers and publishers are going with GFWL at all makes no sense to me, since they are ignoring that PC gamers have already made a VERY clear and concise choice about which DRM/community/DLC/Game service to support. Why would you ignore the massive bulk of gamers in your target market and force something they don't like on them?

Let me know when they fix the in-game overlay so that the mouse isn't off by a few pixels, then I'll be happy.

Honestly, I don't mind MS pushing GFWL. If anything, it puts some pressure on Impulse and Steam. I love me my achievements, and that's something that's lacking in most games on the other platforms. As much as I LOVE Steam, PC digital distribution can still use a lot of work.

Its just not as good as Steam. However, as long as it runs well and stays out of the way as much as possible (both of which it does, to their credit), I dont really mind it being there.

The old GFWL wouldn't launch on my computer. After 2 weeks of fcuking around with it when I had the time, I uninstalled. I had to reinstall when I found that Fallout 3 will not launch without GFWL because I tried to use it to login to windows live and unsuccessfully buy the DLC. I had bought Fallout through Steam, so there was no GFWL bundled with it. This entire situation was a total clusterfcuk.

MS, this new GFWL better be fcuking good you motherfrakers.
