Supreme Commander to command things in a supreme manner on Xbox 360 in early '08 photo

The days of PC controlling the realm of real-time strategy titles have come to an end! Gas Powered Games' PC real-time strategy title Supreme Commander is coming to the Xbox 360 in "early 2008."

Hellbent Games and Aspyr Media will be working on the console port of the title, which will feature exclusive new units, updated maps, and new multiplayer modes. Of course, the game will also feature full Xbox Live support, as well as the pre-requisite "revised, console-specific control interface and HUD," whatever that might mean.

Supreme Commander was released on the PC much earlier this year to some decent reviews, and hopefully will come together nicely on the Xbox 360. Would it be too much to ask for mouse and keyboard support? Oh, that's a PC exclusive "feature," I suppose.

GAS POWERED GAMES, HELLBENT GAMES AND ASPYR MEDIA JOIN FORCES TO BRING SUPREME COMMANDER® TO XBOX 360®

Renowned RTS from Chris Taylor To Debut on Xbox 360® in early 2008

AUSTIN, TX – Nov. 12, 2007 – The Infinite War has raged for over 1,000 years and soon will make its way to a videogame console for the first time. Chris Taylor’s Gas Powered Games, Corp., co-developer Hellbent Games and Aspyr Media have collaborated to bring the acclaimed RTS Supreme Commander to the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.   Supreme Commander, winner of numerous PC nods including the E3 2006 Official Game Critics Award for Best Strategy Game and Editors' Choice Awards from PC Gamer and IGN, puts gamers in control of one of three factions fighting to control the future of mankind.  Adding to the expansive Supreme Commander universe, the Xbox 360 edition will feature exclusive new units, updated maps and new multiplayer modes, and gamers will be able to take the fight online against players from around the world via Xbox LIVE®.  In addition, a revised, console-specific control interface and HUD will give gamers unprecedented strategic power over their armies.

“Chris Taylor and Gas Powered Games have an incredible talent for producing great games, and judging by the amazing reviews, Supreme Commander is no exception,” said Ted Staloch, Executive Vice President, Publishing for Aspyr.  “The RTS genre reaches new levels of excitement on consoles with each new release. Hellbent Games, Gas Powered Games and Aspyr have combined forces to produce an Xbox 360 title that will ensure retail success to match the critical praise.”

“Aspyr’s developer-friendly publishing environment delivers 100% on our vision for bringing Supreme Commander to the Xbox 360,” said Chris Taylor, CEO and Creative Director of Gas Powered Games and Lead Designer of Supreme Commander.  “We believe that we’ve raised the bar for RTS gaming on the PC and now, co-developing with Hellbent Games, we know that we can do the same on consoles. Hellbent brings a talented, veteran team together to deliver Supreme Commander to the Xbox 360 platform.”

Supreme Commander allows gamers to take control of one of three factions—the Cybran Nation, Aeon Illuminate or United Earth Federation—and help their chosen faction win the Infinite War once and for all. Each faction has its own goals, experimental units and back-story that leads            them to the game’s thrilling climax. Battles rage over land, sea and air, and the command and control system puts the gamer in charge of every aspect of the fight, engaging in titanic land, air and naval battles. The revolutionary strategic zoom gives the player the flexibility to control battle groups from a less detailed overhead map view, or zoom right down to ground level, where they can issue orders to single units. The game can handle a vast number of units on screen, and players will need every single one to take down enormous experimental units that can change the tide of battle.

Xbox 360 gamers will experience the Infinite War with full support for HD and surround sound in early 2008.

An RTS on a console? Blizzard tried that once w/ Starcraft on the N64, and we all know how that went.

I'd like to see them succeed, but the odds are stacked against them.

Also, Zero!

Fuck yah!!! I love supreme commander, but it brings my pc to its knees when the action picks up, sufficiently making micro management impossible.

BTW if you haven't played this game, you should. It's really the same thing as Half-Life 2 and Psychonauts. Completely underplayed and under appreciated.

Half-Life 2 is underplayed and under appreciated? What?

What do you mean over? I still think controlling an RTS with a controller is just retarded.

Starcraft was on consoles back in the day, so was the first command and conquer, and more recently C&C3.

Do not want RTS on console without mouse & keyboard support. Too imprecise and inability for uber micro. Unless a strategy is intentionally designed with pad playing in mind, like universe at war, it's either PC or nothing for me.

Controlling an RTS on a controller is fine, but you just don't have ctrl/alt 1-10, so it's utterly unplayable. Being called a cheater and a cheap asshole for not using a mic online(mommy told me not to talk to strangers) in C&C3 was great for a while though!

Meh. I couldn't really get into this on PC.

Great game, wish I had the time to play it as well as the 100 others on my list :(

Having only recently picked this up for PC, I can't imagine anyone playing it on a console. I love the game, but the interface is kind of a chore on PC. The modified UI will have to be an enormous change to be even remotely playable with a controller, and that still won't avoid T1 units being tiny specks or the aggravation of trying to catch planes in the air to give them new targets.

If I were to pick games not suited for console ports, this would be near the top of the list.

Obviously Oni does not know how Battle for Middle Earth 2 and C&C3 went, huh?

Ass.

like they would have to be something truly revolutionary not just in the field of RTS's, but in video games in general , for this to work with a joypad...
I have no doubt that the xbox360 and its 3 cores is more than enough especially if they optimized it for the console instead of all the different pc configurations, but how you control the game is seriously up in the air... anyone want to speculate just how it might work? I'd like to see the shoulder triggers do the zooming, theyre all analog and stuff so it should be easy...

I was joking about the RTS and console thing. There have been a lot of successful attempts lately (which you guys have already mentioned), and it seems to be all the rage now (Halo Wars, etc.).

This is one genre that will not benefit from being ported to the console. Mouse and Keyboard are required to properly play a RTS. Just my two cents, but I don't think even Halo Wars will be that great. Hopefully I'm wrong. The only RTS type game that I can think that was successful on a console was the Kingdom Under Fire series. They did a pretty good job of controlling units on the battlefield.

Wow, I was hoping this rumor wasn't true. Good luck on the port, Aspyr!

wow, good luck streamlining that interface. it was complicated enough with mouse and keys. If they make it work that's great news though.

Seriously, this is gonna suck. I love Supreme Commander, but any decent battle will have between fifty and several hundred units, and if you want any kind of micro-management, you're going to need a keyboard and mouse. Maybe if they smallitized it like Halo Wars is doing, but this will fail. Also, why make a port of the first one, when the next one is coming out this month?

Heh. SupCom could barely be done on a PC. Good luck with that tiny number of buttons.

Not only is selection/micromanagement really hard without a mouse and keyboard, but what about zooming? The zoom feature in Supreme Commander was arguably the most innovative feature of the game - you could zoom anywhere between groundlevel and satellite uber high view using the mousewheel, and it would automatically zoom directly to your cursor, rather than the center of the screen. It was the only way to quickly get around the battlefield, and I can't see it being implemented with a controller at all. Why doesn't the 360 support a keyboard and mouse, anyway? it's not like it doesn't have USB support - I could use a mouse and keyboard on friggin' Dirge of Cerberus for the PS2, how is this more difficult?
