Supreme Commander console sequel might not suck photo

The console port of Supreme Commander was terrible. The game’s frame rate constantly stuttered, the controls were felt like a child designed them, and the visual quality was beyond lackluster. It was essentially every reason why critics argue that real-time strategy isn’t possible on consoles. Well, until Halo Wars at least.

Despite the tragedy that was Supreme Commander, a console version of the sequel is currently in development under a different developer with a CEO who thinks his studio can get Supreme Commander right on consoles.

“I felt bad the developer who did the Xbox 360 version [Hellbent Games] just did not have the time or resources,” Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor told Joystiq during E3. “It was a hair on fire mission.”

“We’re doing it in-house and giving it a lot more time and a lot more resources,” Taylor continued. “I would be very surprised if it didn’t do as well as the PC version.”

Honestly, I’d be surprised if the game worked. I remember trying to review Supreme Commander when I started at Destructoid. It was the first work-related game I had to put down and walk away from. But, hey, here’s to hoping the sequel rocks. Consoles still need good RTS games.

Some RTS elitists might say Halo Wars doesn't do much to give console RTS games much credibility either.

The name Halo on the case is going to fuel sales, regardless of the game being good or not.

I love Supreme Commander on PC, but I'll believe it can work on a console when I see it.

A game of Supreme Commander normally begins with the player solely possessing a single irreplaceable 'Armoured Command Unit', or ACU, the titular 'Supreme Commander'. Normally the loss of this unit results in the loss of the game. These mech suits are designed to be transported through quantum gateways across the galaxy and contain all the materials and blueprints necessary to create a 37th century army from a planet's native resources in hours. All standard units except Commanders and later-summoned Support Commanders (SACU) are entirely robotic in nature, and do not require a local pilot. However, the card companies are already in a big enough fix, as the recession has cut into their ivory back scratcher funds, and Americans are looking to payday loans instead of credit cards.

Well, I'm an RTS elitist but Halo Wars has surprisingly more depth that it looks to have on first sight. It's still a console RTS though :)

Supreme Commander on a console? Do not really want. I never liked any console RTS where you had to select a building and then place it with an analog stick.

the controls for the console port of supreme commander were the best I have ever used to date on a console RTS. The only issue with them was that things didn't always respond quickly, but that isn't the fault of the control scheme per se as it is the terrible port job. I have played through three or four matches of the console port.. mostly because the frame rate doesn't really get any worse (which is to stay still stuttering) as more units fill the screen (bizarre but true). If they can fix the frame rate and do absolutely NOTHING to the control scheme I will pick up the sequel without question. In house FTW!

That's a shame. The PC version is a really good RTS. Still, it's way too large-scale to work with a controller.

Its a shame the console port was so terrible, since Supreme Commander is the best RTS since Total Annihilation (the best RTS ever made)

Since the game won't demand much out of a pc then I guess theres quite a possibility of the console port being better this time.

There's too much awesomeage in Supreme Commander to work properly in a console that is unable to evolve.
