Super Street Fighter IV news & video round-up photo

Super Street Fighter IV is coming. Yup, total surprise, I know.

Here's what you didn't see coming: it will be a standalone retail disc, but it won’t be sold at full retail price. Capcom wanted to release the new content as DLC, but it’s not possible due to all the changes they've done. SSFIV will provide current Street Fighter IV owners with some kind of special bonus though, which sounds kind of odd.

So what’s going to be in Super Street Fighter IV? Eight new characters are coming, two of which you already know about: T. Hawk and new female fighter Juri. The number of new characters could change though as Capcom is open to fan feedback. In fact, a lot of the new content here is based on fan feedback.

A lot of tweaks and rebalancing work is being put into the online code and the original 25 fighters, and because of that, there won’t be any online verses compatibility between Super and regular Street Fighter IV.

The new game will be out in Spring, 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. So how do you guys and gals feel about Super Street Fighter IV? Here's a round-up of our continued SSF IV coverage:

If Shivering Isles can be DLC, SFIV tweaks and characters sure as shit can.

Now that I know 8 fighters are coming instead of 2, I can see why there's another disc involved. I have no problems with that whatsoever. As long as Ibuki and Dudley are involved anyway. ^_^

More of a patch than a new game. Individual characters could easily be DLC.

"Can't" make DLC or "won't" make DLC. Isn't DLC supposed to replace the archaic tradition of re-releasing the same game with words added on to the title. Maybe Capcom got stuck back in the '90s, but I sure as hell didn't.

@Magnalon

I don't think its a size issue, so much as busting up any hooks they may (or may not) have put in place at first.

Then again, I'm a bit more trusting of most devs at face value than most.

Glad to hear its not full retail price, though. More than $30 seems a bit much, so long as we're assigning arbitrary value to months of work (at least).

8 characters and loads of tweaks justifies this new edition.

UNLIKE BLAZBLUE......with it's 2 characters and balancing.

I'm excited but a little bit pissed. I don't see why tweaks and characters can't be added as DLC when plenty of other games seem to do more extensive additions just fine. I'm not surprised though since not ONE fighter this generation seems to be able to release new characters as DLC (Soul Calibur doesn't count since Yoda and Vader were both on the disc already). I've basically given up on that possibility for now.

AALLL that said, I'm interested. Knowing it won't be full price and that owners of the original will get a little something extra makes it not feel as bas as it should.

Also, Dee Jay is already confirmed. There's screens in the new Famitsu.

8 new characters, tweaks and all SFIV for less than 60 is a great deal, also, what Los225 said.

So, if T. Hawk is returning, I'm sure the'll bring Dee Jay back too!!

I don't know, I think Capcom could have made this DLCable, but I guess they want more dollars (assuming they didn't go for DLC for people with no internet in their consoles, lol)

I like hearing that it'll be less than full retail price, though I wonder just how much less. I'm also interested in what this "special bonus" may be.

I knew when I bought SFIV that Capcom wouldn't let it be and would do an incremental follow-up, it's just what they do with SF, but considering the times we live in I had hoped it would be DLC rather than a whole new version of the same basic game. If they really make it worthwhile with the pricepoint and supposed bonus content I won't mind though.

My guess for the bonus is a few extra costumes, taunts, or SFIV online avatar pics.

I hope they prove me wrong and make it something worthwhile: otherwise there'll be a lot of people trading in their copies of SFIV for this. Hell, I might!

See, I'm just not a personal fan of Capcom's "Super" "Hyper" "Turbo" "Second Impact" "Third Strike" minor tweak cash-in attempts.

My favorite Capcom fighting games (and I feel the best ones) are fully justified sequels, like SNK 2, Alpha 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and many others.

They are probably not releasing it as DLC because of size constraints, if you have to modify the engine and the additional characters (taunts, voice, and all) then it would probably exceed the built in memory and being that Microsoft has sold an awful lot of arcade units, it makes sense to not want to aim outside of that range. Assuming it is like 30 bucks, it seems like it will be fine.

Now if it comes with all of the Street Fighter 4 multiplayer content on a second disk, easily worth sixty :)

Yo guys, there aren't 8 new fighters. There are 2. 6 are recycled, and one of those two new ones is disappointingly bad (par for the course for IV).

Seriously, this new girl has no chance of making it into classic SF character design. She looks like she should be in an SNK game (what character have people said of that before?). Chun-Li, Cammy, Sakura, Ibuki, and Makoto (and Elena and Rose a little) are as classic as character design gets. Clean and crisp. They aren't overtly flashy, but they also shine through with personality and thought put into their characters. Juri looks like some fan made her up.

I shouldn't be surprised. Abel alone was the sole good character added in IV (El Fuerte would have passed with me if it wasn't for his insulting Chef bit (way to respect Lucha Libre Capcom!)), where the rest of the characters didn't at all match the greatness of the classics. IV competely misses the
point by either ripping other characters, or forgetting the series is called Street Fighter, as in people who look like actual fighters (okay, exaggerated, but still believable in a fantastic way) and could throw a punch.

I'm not going to stop anyone from enjoying IV. Hell, I'll admit it's a good game (because Super Turbo is a good game). But damn if Capcom isn't willing to advance the series. SF Alpha and III didn't kill SF (hell, they tried to save it!). SFII did. It looks like history's repeating itself and the fans cheer as it happens again.

P.S.: Even though I hate Capcom's shameless reusing of older characters ("for the fans". Ugh!), I'm glad T. Hawk and probably DeeJay made it in. For the longest time I hated those characters along with everyone else. Then I actually started playing as them. That's when I realized I love DeeJay and T. Hawk, and the only reason I hated them was because I was supposed to (group mentality). Hell, I'll state that T. Hawk and DeeJay are the best additions to Super II, and among the best characters in SF period. So stand proud Thunderfoot Warrior and Kickboxing Rhythm-Man, you are worthy!

@Fist

It's been ten years since SF3...

Did you really think Capcom, or for that matter, any smart business would venture back to a an old franchise and simply try to continue where it left off? Hoping for a successful outcome? Especially in a niche genre like Fighters?

They made the right choice.

That said, this not being DLC is a load of shit.

Sink yet more money into a game I barely play? I wonder if I'll need the extra disc to keep playing with people online. I assume so, but tbh I think it's time to trade this in for a points card, and get MvC2 and/or SSF2TDHR on XBLA. :)

You DLC people are crazy. I will take an updated retail disc any day. Especially if they are adding/improving core features. DLC is generally overpriced tack-on garbage, with limited ability to change features of the original game.

I'm so glad I didnt re-purchase SFIV. I bought it for the 360 (before I got my ps3) and I was real close to selling it to gamestop and buying the ps3 version instead. But thanks to gamestop only offering around $15 for a game that was pretty much new, I decided to wait. Now I can get this one and enjoy online play for free! with a better controller (I'm a fan of the ps3's d-pad).
