Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has had a short, but sundry, history of late. Capcom released a beta for the game, bundled with Commando 3, but, according to some accounts, it was almost unplayable. When it wasn't refusing to match players, it was crashing. If a match ever actually got off the ground, it was crippled by Ken's unblockable shoryuken combos.

Capcom originally stated that they weren't going to patch the beta, but they now seem to be singing a slighty revised tune. And by "slightly revised" I mean that they're doing exactly what they said they weren't going to do -- patching the SSFIITHDR beta. Luckily for you, the customer, it is available right now.

Here's a short list of what the patch will do:

  • Ken's shoryuken will no longer be totally overpowered
  • The title won't crash when joining games
  • Online play will be about 50% smoother

JimmyRey from from Capcom Digital explains that, while high ping times can't be avoided, "[they've] optimized the gameplay experience so that it's less noticeable and smoother." If you want to turn the optimization off, there's a nifty little code: Hold the Left Trigger, Right Trigger, RB, and LB and, while holding down the buttons, hit start.

What the patch won't do, however, is add any new characters to the beta. Also, it won't put boobs on either Ken or Ryu.

Good, because Ken is a dickhole. Ryu all the way.

Have they announced when this damned game is coming out, aside from the vague "Fall 2008"?

Wow, I didn't grab the beta and I was unaware of all these problems. I'm glad it's just a beta, but these problems have me worried about the final release. The original SFII release on XBLA had its share of problems playing online too.

For a minute there I thought the beta came bundled with a five year old game.

"The original SFII release on XBLA had its share of problems playing online too."

Most fighting games will have problems online because they require precise timing that gets screwed by lag. And unlike FPSs you can't do much prediction to smooth things. The ones who play ok are games like DOA that have large input windows so that a little lag won't have too much impact on peformance.

i tought that the problems were that most of the original combinations are no longer there, and there's a less complex control scheme.

but i've heard some fighting aficionados in 2df freeplay, they say that the game is too easy and doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Ken is no long awesome.

You best check yourself, mate! Ken might not have his over powered MP Shoryuken or his re-dizzy combo anymore, but damn if he ain't a fightin' machine!

My avatar says it all.

That's the way the original Hadoken has always been. Look closely at a screen shot of any SFII Hadouken and SFA Ken's Hadouken. The image inside the "glow" are the Hadouken thrower's hands.
