What a shocker! Super Smash Bros. Brawl has sold 1.4 million copies in its first week of release with first day sales of 874,000 copies alone. Breaking this down, the game has sold at a rate of 120 units per minute from March ninth to the sixteenth. Brawl has also set the record as becoming the fastest selling videogame in Nintendo of America's history.
Is anyone really surprised by this at all? Considering all of the releases of late, Brawl seems to be the only game that makes me want to play the Wii again (aside from No More Heroes, of course). In any case, we have a big group of Brawl players here at Dtoid. If you're looking to play with anyone, hit up this Forum post for a ton of Brawl Friend codes.

Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Either way, I'm picking up my Wii and Smash Bros. on Saturday hopefully. I won't have online play due to not having internet, and having to log in to Dtoid at work.
But when I do get it, watch out for me!
*Picture for the story loads.*
"Yeah, I heard about that in my CCIT lec- Oh dear."
Anyway, not surprising at all. It's selling like hot cakes right now, and I figured America's sale rate would be more or less like Japan's opening week.
I too have been having trouble brawling online, I think I figured out the problem though....
Anyway, SSBB may be the biggest love/hate game I ever experience. I love all the fanservice and collectibles in trophies, stickers, CDs, etc; the soundtrack may be one of the best any game ever had; and it actually has (crippled) online play... but on the other hand, Sakurai put in perhaps the stupidest feature in any fighting game ever (tripping); by the devs' admission SSE was the main focus of the game, not the multiplayer (aka the heart and soul of Smash); and--
*CHARACTER SPOILERS ZOMG*
--ROB getting in over much worthier characters, Peach and Ganondorf getting terribly nerfed while Marth, Falco, and Fox got better--not to mention Ganondorf is STILL A FUCKING CAPTAIN FALCON CLONE, and no playable K. Rool, Ridley, Krystal, or Wolf Link/Midna--

--is pretty lame. Oh Brawl, how I love but hate you. =(
I'm sure I could find it, but I just got off work and muy tired.
Also, Ike owns you all.
Makes me wonder how much higher that number would've been...
@Novakaine
I would prefer Wolf Link/Midna over most of the Brawl cast. Who the hell likes playing as the Ice Climbers?!
Nah, it's all good. I'm glad it sold well. Sakurai and his team seem to put a lot of work into it. I wish Mario Kart could do the same.
I definitely love silly characters like Ice Climbers and never play as link (well adult link anyway.)
As for online the with anyone is now hit or miss but the with friends has been going pretty good for me. just finished a good set of lag free games just now.
=(

K. Rool would have been a nice addition, but I guess they can't add everyone. Overall I think they did a good job on the character choices. Anyone who has ever had interest in Nintendo at all should be able to find one character on the roster that they like, and they can probably find a lot more than that. They could have added 100 new characters and people would still be complaining about who didn't make the roster.
I agree with the guy who said tripping is the stupidest feature ever added in a fighting game. But how could you possibly think that the developer's main focus was the adventure mode? Have you even played the game? It's been in development for over 2 years, and the adventure mode is only like 8 hours long.
