Super Smash Bros. Brawl sells over 1 million copies in first week photo

What a shocker! Super Smash Bros. Brawl has sold 1.4 million copies in its first week of release with first day sales of 874,000 copies alone. Breaking this down, the game has sold at a rate of 120 units per minute from March ninth to the sixteenth. Brawl has also set the record as becoming the fastest selling videogame in Nintendo of America's history.

Is anyone really surprised by this at all? Considering all of the releases of late, Brawl seems to be the only game that makes me want to play the Wii again (aside from No More Heroes, of course). In any case, we have a big group of Brawl players here at Dtoid. If you're looking to play with anyone, hit up this Forum post for a ton of Brawl Friend codes.

first maybe?

Either way, I'm picking up my Wii and Smash Bros. on Saturday hopefully. I won't have online play due to not having internet, and having to log in to Dtoid at work.

But when I do get it, watch out for me!

"Yeah, I heard about that in my CCIT lec- Oh dear."

Anyway, not surprising at all. It's selling like hot cakes right now, and I figured America's sale rate would be more or less like Japan's opening week.

When you do, be sure to update your face insurance as I will beat it in with an LCD bowling ball the instant I see you online.

I've been having trouble brawling online. Has anybody heard any murmurs about any bugs or errors?

Man, that Samus sure gets around. First Snake, now R.O.B.?

I too have been having trouble brawling online, I think I figured out the problem though....

Video_Cognito: No, you're not. Everybody is going through some terrible experiences with SSBB's online service....

Anyway, SSBB may be the biggest love/hate game I ever experience. I love all the fanservice and collectibles in trophies, stickers, CDs, etc; the soundtrack may be one of the best any game ever had; and it actually has (crippled) online play... but on the other hand, Sakurai put in perhaps the stupidest feature in any fighting game ever (tripping); by the devs' admission SSE was the main focus of the game, not the multiplayer (aka the heart and soul of Smash); and--

*CHARACTER SPOILERS ZOMG*

--ROB getting in over much worthier characters, Peach and Ganondorf getting terribly nerfed while Marth, Falco, and Fox got better--not to mention Ganondorf is STILL A FUCKING CAPTAIN FALCON CLONE, and no playable K. Rool, Ridley, Krystal, or Wolf Link/Midna--

*END CHARACTERS SPOILERS ZOMG*

--is pretty lame. Oh Brawl, how I love but hate you. =(

One question, (and not to start any flame wars. I'm just curious) did it beat Halo 3 in terms of selling more in the first week?

I'm sure I could find it, but I just got off work and muy tired.

@superbeefy2050: Apparently, Halo 3 sold 3.84 million copies worldwide in its first week, so no.

Also, Ike owns you all.

If the Wii wasn't still so hard to find for the average joe, then maybe the first week would've been much better.

Makes me wonder how much higher that number would've been...

@Novakaine
I would prefer Wolf Link/Midna over most of the Brawl cast. Who the hell likes playing as the Ice Climbers?!

1.4 million is a lot. Who would have thought that a game featuring nostalgic nintendo characters, on a games machine that lacks more than a handful of quality games and that people are still lining up to buy, would do so well.

Nah, it's all good. I'm glad it sold well. Sakurai and his team seem to put a lot of work into it. I wish Mario Kart could do the same.

Ganandorf is such a freaking slow C. Falcon clone that I hardly even consider him one. Trying to be him requires a whole different strategy. Namely, if you're playing against someone today you better hope you pressed the a button yesterday.

Bluefusion: And the worst thing is that they took away his best move! The lighting jab (neutral A) was essential to Ganondorf to make up for his terrible sluggishness, and now he's even slower and without his best move to compensate.

maybe kojima should make the next mgs for wii it would probably sell better than the ps3 one coming out. OH SNAP. P.S congrats to Smash Bros for making the Wii even more sought after than it already is.

I wonder how many copies went to the UK. I bought one and it's awesome. I know another guy who imported too. Seriously, it's like nintendo never learnt their lesson on the GC.

ROB is an awesome character. Why should someone like Wolf Link/Midna get in over a classic like ROB? We don't need 3 Links.

K. Rool would have been a nice addition, but I guess they can't add everyone. Overall I think they did a good job on the character choices. Anyone who has ever had interest in Nintendo at all should be able to find one character on the roster that they like, and they can probably find a lot more than that. They could have added 100 new characters and people would still be complaining about who didn't make the roster.

I agree with the guy who said tripping is the stupidest feature ever added in a fighting game. But how could you possibly think that the developer's main focus was the adventure mode? Have you even played the game? It's been in development for over 2 years, and the adventure mode is only like 8 hours long.
