I have made no secret of my burning hatred for the bullsh*t that gets heaped on the European market by Japanese publishers, not least by Nintendo, whose decision to refuse Europe a release date for one of the most anticipated Wii titles of all time (out of like, two) was taken by many, especially myself, as a huge slap in the face. I don't even care to play the thing, but principles are principles.

Anyway, the release date seems to have FINALLY been revealed, weeks after the US got their copies, months after Japan, and long after everyone has stopped caring about the stupid overhyped game. Aaaand if you thought it'd head our way any time soon, think again. Nintendo will see fit to grace Europe with Brawl's presence on June 27th. That's a few days before July, which was the originally rumored release month. I guess an optimist could say that means we're getting it earlier than expected. That person would be murdered shortly thereafter. After receiving weeks of conflicting, rubbish excuses, and Reggie Fils-Aime taking the p*ss out of them all, European Nintendo fans can finally play Brawl (legally) in the middle of the summer.

Thanks, Nintendo, you're the greatest!

Wankers.

Too late Nintendo... I've already had my Wii chipped, and got a downloaded copy of US Brawl from my cousin. Not only that, but my dear cousin gave me several other DVD's with Wii games on them (oooh Mario Kart is fun!).
I normaly dont support piracy, but there are limits to how much I can tolerate. I just felt like being rebelious for once.
This could've been prevented you know...

Independent Games Journalism (...as this site describes itself as) = Angry, Biased Games Journalism?

I don't see why anyone has a God-given right to be given a fucking video game by a company in their region as early as all the others. Like you and Nintendo made some contract where they'd promise they'd come and sell you this game.

Fucking spoiled entitlement of young Westerners.

Eh. This is what happens when a company only has to answer to itself, especially an overseas one. They look at their rabid local fanbase- everyone else gets shafted, in varying degrees. And yes, I really don't think the whole 'the EU is a very big place' excuse works. Four months? To compare:

So no, the whole PAL/EU is really, really big really doesn't hold water. What it is is a viewpoint held by some that Japan and the US are really the only big console consumers, which is complete and utter bullshit. I'm fairly well aquainted with issues with translations, having spent most of my childhood overseas and having to deal with translations and doing them a lot. This is just laziness and a shitty attitude mixed with a business plan that forces demand by meeting unacceptable levels of supply.

@Jim

You ever think that maybe that was one reason MGS 4 was delayed? I'm not saying that Nintendo is doing the right thing but would it had been better for them to make us all wait until this summer?

I just think that you are making a bigger deal out of this than what it is. Its not like they are taking anything out of the game and with your job you have more stuff to play.

Im usually amused by your angry guy articles but this one doesn't make much sense. Your mad because the game hasn't been released yet, but you also make it sound like the only reason you want to play it is because Nintendo did a great job of hyping it up, and you think its a crap game.

Your mad because you cant play it, but you dont care if you play it or not. Color me confused (and blue)

You are not listening.

I am not angry because I can't play Brawl. I don't much care about Brawl. I am angry because Europe is always being treated like a redheaded stepchild. Are you aware of Nintendo's history of this shit? It kept Animal Crossing from the UK for over a year while simultaneously working its ass off to make sure nobody imported it. Now, Nintendo is free to do what it wants, but what kind of message does that send to Europeans?

I think Europe is an under appreciated, shat-upon market and even if they're games I don't want to play, I still would like my fellow European gamers to be able to play them while the world still gives a shit about them.

If Nintendo is as "serious" about online gaming as it claims, it can't release online-capable games so far apart. It's retarded and makes no sense.

Just to make this clear: I have no pre-set hatred of Nintendo and my post history shows that I am just as likely to praise them when they do something good, as I am to blast them when they do something bad.

The issue here is that I don't think Europe will be treated any better if its people just roll over and beg for more like abused puppies. Nintendo does this shit because it knows it can. That's why I want to encourage Europeans who are sick of this shit to say "you're being assholes, stop being assholes please."

I want to see a better environment for gamers in Europe, and Australia as well. I want us to have timely releases and not be taxed out the ear. We will NEVER have that if we just keep quiet whenever we feel shafted. Am I really so fucking wrong for trying to voice the frustration a lot of my fellow gamers feel?

I say no.

Name me more than two Wii games that were subject that a high level of must-have anticipation. I can only think of Galaxy and Brawl. Kart hasn't been subjected to that level of hype, it's just ... been there.

Show me where the other highly anticipated, ***** games are. It wasn't so much a slur on the Wii, as a comment to say "Europe isn't getting one of the two must-haves for ages, and that is shit."

"citing "page views" as evidence of your blog's worth is like citing album sales as a metric for record quality."

Not exactly. That douchebubble said that I sucked. Obviously a lot of people disagree with him, otherwise I wouldn't be the most widely read editor of the largest indie games blog in the world. S'all I was saying -- I must be doing something right.

"Its hard not to look at some of your posts as just trolling for hits when you, well, kind of admit that you're just trolling for hits."

Never admitted that -- see above.

But even if I *was* trolling (and believe me, I write this shit from the heart, regardless of who gets angry or not) could you blame me? Some of these fucking morons just hand me hits and money by being angry bitches who are angry because they think I am an angry bitch and ironically decide to bitch about it angrily. Maybe they should stop it -- I'm not going to stop writing how I write, so they may as well stop me benefiting as much from it.

But they can't do that. They have no self-control.

Shouldn't your hate be more directed at Nintendo of Europe more-so than Nintendo of America or Nintendo Co. (Japan). As I understand it, each division of Nintendo is responsible for the localization of a game developed by Nintendo (as long as Nintendo Co. has given approval, of course). I mean, I guess you could argue that it's Nintendo Co.'s fault for not pushing NOE to localize faster if that is the case, but people in NOA, such as Reggie, probably don't know much about why they have such long holdups, and really, they probably don't care...nor should you expect them to.

Sorry, normally I'm 100% with what yousay, Jim, but some of the nonsense here kind of pisses me off.

Brawl is a really good game. Maybe you disagree with the hype, but a lot of people (myself included) feel it was well deserved. They packed that disc to the fucking brim with great content and blew Melee out of the water. For someone who likes Dynasty Warriors (or whatever the fuck), which is essentially the same fucking game over and over and over again, it seems pretty strange for you to call Brawl a "stupid overhyped game" and (paraphrasing) "woth the wait... NOT! LOLOL!".

It is fucking ridiculous and nonsensical that they delayed it so long, but this article didn't need to bring up your opinions of the game's quality. But I know how much you love stating your opinions, even in a context where they really don't matter.

But you're smarter than a fucking stupid Nintendo fan like me, so I expect you to call me a "dumb cunt" or some such. OH DEAR ME, NOT THAT.

If he had said "Brawl sucks" in the comments then it's his opinion otherwise I don't see you condemning the people who say "Sterling sucks" without giving a valid reason other than that they're Nintendo fanboys and that "Nintendo is the greatest".

Here's a couple questions I want Jim to answer: Why did it take Nintendo so long to give a European release date, and why is it four months behind the American release date?

If you can't answer that, than how is it a "slap in the face"? How can you possibly take it personal if you don't understand the restrictions and issues multinational corporations face when dealing with varied markets?

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until you understand: It's MOST LIKELY something to do with supply, production of PAL discs, or distribution issues, dealing with various laws regarding transporting. I don't pretend to know the actual reason, but I assure you they are not doing it for no reason, or just to piss you off.

"It's MOST LIKELY something to do with supply, production of PAL discs, or distribution issues, dealing with various laws regarding transporting."

In that case, Nintendo is the only company in the world incapable of delivering a product in a timely fashion. Capcom can do it. Konami can do it. Rockstar, with a game that's going to sell far more than Brawl did, can manage it.

If Nintendo hasn't been able to fix its distribution problem in Europe, then something in the company's fuc ... oh wait, it managed it for Galaxy.

i know why nintendo does this.

They make you import the game, and then make you buy the Pal version. Why you ask?

Because I have a freeloader and a copy of brawl, which only works if I continuously try to put the disc on the console for it to work.

I have been lucky and made it work on the third try, but I have also had to eject and put the cd 30 times.

So, am I buying the Pal version? you bet your ass I will.

By the way. Brawl < Melee.
I cried a little when I first played brawl after seeing all characters on slo-mo.

You can act like Jim doesn't have a point here, but fact is, you're the ones who already have your copy of Brawl and have had it for weeks, and will proceed to have it for a couple of months before we get it. It's VERY easy to say "stop whining" from that side of the fence, but here's the thing - it just makes you look like an ignorant bitch. nintendo are just stupid - this is not a marketing strategy, just stupidity. the brilliant hype they had leading up to the launch would have worked wonders on the European market too. I can guarantee that the game will only sell 2/3 of what it should have and most of those copies will have been traded in as the real hardcore gamers will have already imported their copies.

In the age of the internet and globalisation there are no excuses for anything short of worldwide release dates for films, games or music - it's a basic understanding of internet and the media. Dumbasses.

Do you really think Nintendo is STUPID or just hiding the reason why this release date is so far behind?

I was born and raised in America, and moved to Ireland about five years ago. I didn't realise how bad European people had it for a while, since I had NTSC consoles, and imported. But now, owning a Wii and having to endure these waits, I now believe that this is a fucking outrage.

I've waited long enough already for Brawl. I think I'm not going to purchase it when it comes out. First I'll see how it sells, then buy it later. I just don't really care anymore.

slayoyayo, you're right. Nintendo are champions of Europe and care deeply. I've heard that Nintendo executives cry themselves to sleep because it was just IMPOSSIBLE to release a videogame less than half a year after it came out in the US. Despite the fact that nearly every other videogame company in existence can manage it when it wants to, Nintendo is just bound by the chains that bound Fenrir himself & can't release Brawl, despite its best efforts.

The fact that Nintendo has issued two conflicting and less-than-satisfactory excuses for this issue means nothing. It really tried so very hard.

If you believe that, then you pretty much have to admit that Nintendo isn't very good at dealing in a worldwide market, since companies with less money and success than Nintendo seems to be capable of this impossible feat that JUST SO HURRRD!

Also, do you have a copy of Brawl yourself? Are you a European?

I realise sterling's obnoxious arrogance can be a little tiresome, but at least he can hold his fucking end of a debate. Regurgitating the same arguments without anything to back them up over and over is just fucking annoying. The fact is that being a dedicated gamer in europe is like being an olympic swimmer in zimbabwe. The fact that we routinely have to wait several months for a lot of games is just ridiculous, given the ever shrinking size of the world, caused by the internet. Nintendo are certainly not the only country that pull this shit, but they're definitely one of the worse offenders.
