Super sensationalism: NY Dept. of Criminal Justice's games slideshow photo

The New York Department of Criminal Justice has put together a slideshow called Video Games and Children: Virtual Playground vs. Danger Zone, and after watching it, you'll join us in the hopes that non-gaming parents will never see this.

GamePolitics has a pretty good rundown of the many holes in this video. While some solid tips for non-gaming parents are presented in the end, most of the 20-minute slideshow reeks of misinformed sensationalism and cheesy PowerPoint animations.

It draws on all of the gaming "horror stories" of the past years, and then throws in odd terms like "killographic" (referring to first-person shooters) and incorrect titles like “Grand Theft San Andreas.”

Lastly, they list a known hoax organization's Web page as a resource. Nice going, NY DoJ.

Strangely enough, I did kind of dig their inclusion of Death Race as the "first violent videogame," even though they showed footage a 1990's version instead of the 1970's original.

Hit the jump to see my favorite screen shot from this video.

[Thanks, JR]

"Parents should decide what is appropriate for their children." I think they really hit that one on the head. The age of personal responsibility has ended, we now live in a world where we are willing to blame absolutely anything except for ourselves.

This video wouldn't enrage so me so much as a New Yorker if this came from Spitzer's campaign offices or anyplace like that, but this piece of propaganda filth came from the DCJ's Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which should probably be focusing its time and resources, perhaps, on finding missing or exploited children.

Aside from dancing around the issue of parental responsibility during the entire course of the video, I particularly love how the narrator blurts out "although studies have been inconclusive" before going into detail for several minutes on the results of studies that support Spitzer's crusade against video games, and then jumping back and forth between referring to America's Army as a recruiting tool and referring to it as a military trainer without explicitly stating so. It's almost a Michael Moore technique, except not as skillfully executed.

In short, goddammit, Spitzer. This is why we can't have nice things.

Child actor in the begining. Comparing Grand Theft Auto to Playboy? Talk about 2 different worlds.

"Parents should decide what is appropirate for their children" wow sound advise from a propaganda film? Also "the VT shooter played counter strike often" was that confirmed? I thought it was shown that he didn't play violent games.

This is infuriating. I loved the part where they listed all the advantages of playing video games... then made bullshit ones against it right after. Social stagnation was actually a reason? With as much online and multiplayer options in games today, Social isolation is not even a legitimate idea in any sense anymore.

I especially love the part where they have the little 6 year old kid describing that game, I really wonder what it is, even in the GTA you cant dump gasoline on a person and lightem up.

Also, on the note that gaming means social isolation, that must be exactly why Im here on a social gaming site now reading other people's opinions/comments about this idiocracy that is new york... Also im obviously going to now have irrisponsilbe sex because i saw the car bob up and down in GTA when the hooker got in...

On the MMORPG section i like the subliminal message where for the WoW screen they used, it was the chineese version of the game, playing on more of the xenophobic tendencies of the older generations, and its ludachrist how that kid is playing it up his WoW problems for the interview, I know tons of people who do play all the time, and they dont go on violent rampages, they just getup, logon, eat, and chat w/ the guild while keeping up thier grades, and holding a job (myself included in that catagory to a lesser extent) that kid is just lazy and blames gaming because his mom gave him an easy excuse to take the blame off him, which makes me sick to see people passing the blame onto a medium that w/ control is harmless.

My list could go on but im just getting tired of it now... Christ I wish someone in the Gov would actually learn what theyre talking about b4 they make a video like this. (also i like the history of videogames, pong, deathrace, wolfenstine3D, Doom, Soliers of Fortune, Bully, in that order :)
