I know, I know -- this might be old news. But if we fired up the Wii Shop Channel around here once in awhile, we might have noticed this earlier. It's a good thing Destructoid community member Amethystine is paying attention.
According to the recently added news feed on the Wii Shop Channel, August is the month of Metroid, which was kicked off with today's release of the original classic for the Virtual Console. Next week will see the release of the Super Nintendo classic, Super Metroid ... among other, more personal and intimate releases over the thought of this game, as well.
The "Month of Metroid" will close out with the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. A pretty good month for Metroid fans and Wii owners, if you ask me. I wonder if the impending release of Super Mario Galaxy will see similar fanfare.
[Thanks, Amethystine!]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Super Metroid is easily one of my favorite games of all time.
Monday cannot come soon enough.
just a question, does VC games have upgraded sound or graphics or are just ports?
i know super metroid, is a super complete- perfecr game, but an extra "bonus" would be a cherry on top, made of awesomeness
It's the original game, pixel for pixel, sound for sound. Like you said, not a huge deal -- the game is a classic, and a lot of SNES 2D stuff holds up very well, even today.
As for the Mario Galaxy month I'd love to see the re-release of Mario All Stars.
For some reason I keep getting these VC games. I don't necessarily play them that much, but I think Super Metroid is gonna be a must buy. I played Fusion, and loved it, so there you go.
I'll try to dig up a shot by shot comparison of OG NES games, emulated, and VC. I saw one a few months back. The VC looked the best.
It works for N64 games too. Star Fox 64 looks much better on the VC.
So I assume it would work for SNES games as well.
@slorojo
SMB3 AND they could possibly, just maybe have enough balls to properly release the original SMB 2 here in the US. Not the Doki Doki Majo version. The thing is, they wouldn't have to change anything. Just put it up, that's it. And the weird thing is that the original SMB 2 is out already on the VC in Japan.
I mean really. I have the snes and the super metroid cartridge but I just put them both with a bunch of other Nintendo things in the Tupperware.
And you all know how it is when you put stuff in the Tupperware. Once it's in there, it stays there.
Nintendo won't because they get more monees from actually selling games, and if you don't pick up Super Metroid on VC you are an idiot (Assuming you like Metroid gameplay and don't already own the SNES original).
I can't wait for next week, because I have have never played Super Metroid!
Nintendo has to do a similar campaign SSBB and Galaxy as well!
(Although it sucks that they couldn't just include a demo for Corruption...)
They aren't packaging in these old Metroids in any way with Corruption because they don't need to. Virtually every person that owns a Wii that would have any desire to play the older Metroids has been salivating at the chance to play Corruption since November 19th (and likely before). So they'll take the $5-8 a pop instead, thank us very much.
"hey customers! in appreciation of the millions of dollars we're about to make off you, here are 2 older games from the series, free of charge. we realize you've played them many times, you shouldn't have to pay for them again. and, we want you to use your saved up money to buy the $50 game. thanks for sticking with us."
but nintendo love pooping on their customers.
"not only are you gonna pay $50 bucks, we need to soak and extra $13 bucks out of every metroid fan! we hate you. we just want you money. we care none about the people that have been around for 20 some years or whatever."
im sorry, downloading the games is just becoming a joke.
yet i still do it:(
are they ever going to give any away for free?
See?
And as for similar fanfare for the next big Mario release, there's not that much left to release in a 'Month of Mario', is there? They've already put out the original Super Mario, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Mario 2.. right? That leaves SMB3 and.. All Stars?
Shutteth thy fack uppeth.
Do you really need free games to persuade you to buy a AAA title?
Yes, I loathe metroid.
watch your mouth.
