Super Meat Boy tempts fate, tells us not to be like Hitler photo

I really want Super Meat Boy to come out. The game has great art direction, killer old-school difficulty, a Don Hertzfeldt-flavored sense of humor, and is planned to feature 12 indie game characters in multi-player mode. An indie Smash Bros is something I've wanted for a while, and this game could make it happen, if Nintendo doesn't pull the plug on it first.

When promoting your WiiWare game, you might be able to get away with making a half-joking dig at vegetarians, but Hitler jokes? I've never seen it attempted before, and I'm guessing there is reason for that. Nintendo doesn't like it when you mention the word "Wii" (if that is a word) and "Hitler" in the same breath. It just doesn't create the kind of mental image they're going for right now.

It will be interesting to see if Super Meat Boy actually ever comes out. With WiiWare, videogames just have a nasty habit of disappearing. I'm still waiting to review the "new and improved" Eternity's Child WiiWare, but after Luc Bernard's "Nazi" game got Nintendo all annoyed, it may be that the guy might never get his stuff on a Nintendo console.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but thus far, Nintendo has shown they have absolutely no problem with games not coming to their consoles. Only time will tell if my paranoia is justified.

I don't really get why they're coming from this angle now, the flash version seemed like vegetarian propaganda almost.

Hard to believe leader of the third Reich was against eating meat...

@Justice

The flash game actaully made fun of people like you who thought it was vegetarian propaganda.

I'm what way could this be an "indie smash bros"?

In the sense of lots of characters from other games, I'll see that.

But have you actually *played* the meatboy games? I don't think it could possibly be further from a smash bros style game.

That being said, I am totally psyched for this game.

I will buy this, and then exclaim:

I am a consumer whore!

And how!

A more compelling argument would be "PETA are vegetarians, don't be like PETA".

@ Tino- Super Meat Boy is a new game, with four-player co-op, versus and party modes. With 12 characters from different indie games, an emphasis on NES era nostalgia, and 2D platforming at its core, I don't think calling Super Meat Boy the "Indie Smash Bros." is that crazy of a claim.

I don't think Nintendo was annoyed by Bernard's Nazi game. They simply pointed out that there were no plans to publish the game when asked by the media, which is true - the game was (and still is) nowhere near finished and didn't have a publisher, which is why it wasn't set to be published. After playing House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld, I really doubt Nintendo gives much of a crap about this stuff. This isn't the late 80s and early 90s anymore, when Nintendo actually censored third-party games.

@ LKM- Well, Luc told me otherwise, but that was a while ago.

Too bad he doesn't blog here anymore, otherwise he'd set the record straight.

If you're looking for an indie Smash Bros., you might wanna check out the Indie Brawl board on TIGSource. It's already looking really flippin' sweet.

"The flash game actaully made fun of people like you who thought it was vegetarian propaganda."

It sure seemed like that at first, but on the final chapter the game would start giving new messages in a more sincere tone.

I guess this revels otherwise, or they could just be doing it all over again. Confusing!

Don't mention video games with Hitler in them. Especially those troublesome WW2 shooters.

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm nothing like Hitler.

What's their point? (/sarcasm).

I hate not having a Wii so much right now.
