A touch of sad news on the Super Meat Boy front, I'm afraid. It seems those desperately awaiting a Wii-compatible version of the game are going to be in for a longer, if not indefinite, wait.
"There will not be a WiiWare version of SMB," reads a Tweet from Team Meat. "We are looking in to retail Wii, bit it's also looking grim. Still looking though."
If you recall, there were concerns with size limitations and Team Meat not wanting to split the content up into multiple installments. Let's hope a deal can be reached for a retail Wii edition of Super Meat Boy, because you know what that means -- awesome box art!
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The Team basically was taken aback by Nintendo's hatred for free commissions from guaranteed sales, and it really rubbed them the wrong way. These people aren't Nintendo haters - why do you think they chose WiiWare in the first place? They respected Nintendo. But after they really saw how stubborn Nintendo was (as I've said before, a few of my friends have tried to get quality things published by them, and they outright said "no", for no reason), they decided to go with any outlet they could.
Microsoft literally welcomed them with open arms in like a week's time after finding out they couldn't do WiiWare. Why wouldn't you want to foster that relationship? Same with the developer of Retro City Rampage. This is their job: these people need to make a living, so why would you mess around with a company who doesn't want to be helpful, when you need to eat?
Plus, after all that, they're still trying for a Wii retail release in some fashion, on top of bringing updates to Xbox Live, AND Steam! How can you hate these people outside of being a Nintendo fanboy!
well I just hope some publisher could pick this up for a retail relese
Only problem is that piracy would rape it up the ass with the game being less than 1gb
Just because other devs use it as a means to rip off the consumer doesn't mean they can't do it right.
Tommy and Edmund's strategy with Meatboy is to have one, simple, fully encapsulated game. Extra levels are free - characters are all free - the level editor for PC (which, subsequently, will port levels over to XBLA) is free. They said there will be no Super Meat Boy 2, and they'll be working on Super Meatboy for months to come, adding new content, patching, and fixing things as they go - also, the community will be constantly making new chapters and levels, essentially making the game live on for years.
Multiple installments would be FAR too muddled to realize that vision. They'd have to patch in two or more WiiWare games, and arbitrarily decide what game gets what content - where's the sense in that?
SERIOUSLY!?! With the massive amount of utter shit that gets released on the Wii, you're telling me it's "hard to get"? Something is seriously wrong here.
Seriously.
Ignore him. I love Nintendo's games, but even I'm not blind to their sometimes strict business decisions...
If you're an established business, with a PR department and everything, you CAN get retail in an easier manner.
Case and point: Carnival Games Wii - and infamously bad shovelware game. Know who developed it? An in-house junction compliments of 2K Games. Heard of them? Nintendo has.
Have you ever heard of Edmund and Tommy? Two guys that programmed a flash game in their basement, with hardly any full console experience, no PR department, or registered business license? Nintendo didn't - and they gave them a hard time. Microsoft and Valve [Steam] gave them a chance.
Nintendo: good hard working developers want to sell quality third party content on your box, and your constraints are blocking them! Fix it!
Team Meat: ninty is inviting you to try shipping and learning from smaller skus. Instead you're citing that you can't! Fix it! (understandably this might be too expensive at this point. In tht case, my apologies!)
both parties: fix it!
as I've said before, a few of my friends have tried to get quality things published by them, and they outright said "no", for no reason
Do you mean they tried to get Nintendo to be the publisher, or they tried to get authorization to put content up on the service?
Anyway ...
I figured this would happen. And with no PC demo out for a while to see how it runs (I know it's lightweight, but my PC sucks dick), I don't want to risk buying the game and having to deal with my shitty computer. ;_;
They tried to get a game ON a Nintendo system (one was DS/one was WiiWare) at all - no reason was cited for the denial. Microsoft, Valve, and Sony, my friends say, always give a reason, and are much more helpful to developers.
Getting Nintendo to be a full on *publisher* for an in-house indie game would be absurd!
I suppose they'll just have to look into some sort of Wii retail release, or maybe a 3DS release.
And while SMB is indeed amazing, I don't understand why Team Meat has such rampant fanboys compared to any other indie developer. (I'm personally looking forward to what 2D Boy has cooking next...) I understand they're heavily invested in their community, but they're not particularly pleasant or humble...
I think Nintendo asked Team Meat to put the game on the wii...lol
I'm not calling your friends liars, but that's rather strange that the folks at Nintendo would just outright say "no" and nothing else. Did they ask "why not?"
Also, Nintendo HAS published games by indie devs on WiiWare. Fluidity is one of them.
LOL RRoD LOL!
Don't shaft Nintendo, Team Meat, they're the only reason you've had your success.
i understand nintendo and that policy because they made a shitty gimick console, but sony? i think these guys are trying to justify themselves going with microsoft and i'm willing to bet microsoft has thrown them a couple bones to keep it only on their system.
i'm probably wrong but, there is always two sides, you don't think sony would like to have the game? ask them and find out their reasons, its most likely something team meat did or signed.
"beware the sound of one hand clapping"
Haha, no.
As for the story, why is a retail release not looking good? I think it'd be perfect for retail.
That's not true. Team Meat posted themselves, asking fans
"if we decided to try to find a publisher & do a boxed version for $20 (with extras) but come out later on the wii, would you hold out?"
As far as I know, it was their idea. They then asked Nintendo about it, and Nintendo gave them the runaround. Do you have a source?
This is fucking Halo all over again, except this time, we don't have an award winning developer like Bungie, we have a bunch of pricks who fire their mouths off and make excuses. Prove me wrong, Team Meat, and I'll be the first to purchase a retail copy of Super Meat Boy, but until then, you've really disappointed me. Hope you signed a contract with Nintendo, and that they feel particularly vicious.
PSN version won't happen, My laptop can't run steam, and I'm not going to buy an Xbox for an XBLA title no matter how good it is
They haven't given Nintendo ANYTHING. ANYTHING. Instead, they developed for the XBLA, and released a PC port which I've heard was bug riddled, and now they're saying "Oh, Nintendo's file size restrictions are the problems" and not the fact that they didn't develop for the system, like they were supposed to.
They owe Nintendo SOMETHING for their success, as they really wouldn't have Super Meat Boy without them.
anyhow. in my opinion, something here ain't adding up and i'm willing to bet these guys don't want to start a fire by saying microsoft is giving them more money to be and stay exclusive.
i could be wrong and these guys could be telling the truth, but the notion of that assumtion sony didn't show the amount of interest they wanted them to show is a bunch of bullshit. and if so, its not on sony to sell the game to sony, its on team meat to sell the game to sony to sell to us. if they don't want to be on that platform, then they should just say it and not twiddilywink around with it.
And since WiiWare is out I would actually much rather see this on DS than Wii, makeing the game portable would be great.
"Q: Why No Ps3!!!
A: Why wont this question die? We have answered it publicly at least 15 times but it just never ends.
We Cant EVER do a ps3 version of super meat boy because when we were going into negotiations with publishers Sony was the only one who didn't express much interest in the game. We assumed this ment that they didn't want the game and decided to sign with Nintendo and Microsoft. Our contracts excluded any release on Ps3.
We would have loved to do a ps3 version, but its not at all possible what so ever now. so please stop asking about it."
I have no problem with this, as I get that they have no bargaining power as two little guys trying to bargain with massive corporations. What I have a problem with is that it looks like they're going to fail to meet their agreement with Nintendo (which keep in mind, they were 'Team Meat's first agreement). Most people aren't going to give a shit. A good game is a good game, they'll say. But I'm not a fan of developers who don't look into everything, find out that they overlooked something, and instead of admitting an honest mistake, make excuses for it. If Team Meat got money from Microsoft to make it purely exclusive to the 360, I'll be ticked, because they obviously are not showing that old agreements mean nothing to them, and this leads me to believe that they're purely in it for the money, rather than the actual love of games and gaming. If they admit it now, I'll be mad, but arguably, most people would rather know the truth than be lied to.
But hey, here I am arguing about semantics and morality on the internet. And that makes me a tool. At least tools are useful.
The answer is no, he wasn't going to self-publish it, as he was going to (and I believe still is trying to) develop it for the DS, just as freeware. Bob's Game is the game equivalent of that bad singer on the American Idol try-outs that has a fit and just ends up being made a fool of on national TV. Except he pretty much embarrassed himself by having a fit on the internet, which wouldn't have been seen if he wasn't trying to get pity. I feel bad for the guy, as being a game maker for Nintendo was a dream of mine as a little kid, but I wouldn't say Nintendo is to blame entirely.
