Super Mario Galaxy replaces Ocarina of Time as highest ranked photo

According to Game Rankings, Super Mario Galaxy is the highest rated game of all time, overcoming long-time title holder The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The recently released Nintendo Wii game has racked up either very high and even perfect numbers from the media outlets (we loved it!) that reviewed it, and Game Rankings gives it an overall average of 97.8%, barely beating Ocarina's 97.6%. Don't feel bad: Ocarina of Time is an amazing game, but Next-Gen points out that the title has held that top spot for nine years.

For some additional Nintendo fan ammo, check out number three on the list: Nintendo takes all three top spots, with Metroid Prime bringing up the rear.

Great game, but definitely not the best of all time. Same with OoT.

I'm going to side with Kyousuke on this one, in regards to the number of reviews that have sprung up over 9 years.

I get the impression that most people who rag on galaxy haven't played it, or at least haven't played it much. It's an absolutely incredible game. The controls are simple, but deep enough to allow all sorts of different tricks. The graphics are absolutely fucking gorgeous(note the lack of "for a wii game" qualifier). The level design is the best I have ever seen. Now, I'm more of a zelda man than mario. OoT, windwaker and TP are definitely among my favourite games of all time. Conversely, I didn't even get mario sunshine because I didn't think it looks fun. In fact, I hate most 3d platformers. All that considered, I still firmly believe that galaxy deserves that top spot. Will it become my favourite game ever? Probably not, because platformers aren't my shebang. But the level of polish and absolute beatificiousness of its design is as good as anything I've ever played.

@Jack of No trades: Are you writing up a 10/10 review for OoT as we speak? :p

I don't think those three games are the best ever created, but I'm convinced Galaxy is the finest 3D game Nintendo has yet made. To my mind, it's simply more fun than any of the 3D Zeldas. It's about pure gameplay, simple and deep. Since most levels are quite linear, each one feels more like a tight, perfectly-designed, replayable stage from a 2D Mario than a typical "action-adventure"-style arena to collect stuff in. The controls are, IMO, perfect. The camera isn't quite but it would be churlish to complain.

@Kyousuke Nanbu

Ah, it's nice to you see you repeating the same tired crap you always repeat whenever a new Nintendo/Wii/Mario thread comes up. Consistency is good, well done.

"Here's the big question, if not Oot or Galaxy what would everyone here say is the "greatest game of all time"?"

RE4 was pretty amazing, and the Wii Edition was even better. That game still haunts my dreams - simply brilliant. I'd have to rank that game way, way up there.

As far as a game that completely rocked my world like never before - I'd have to say the original Unreal. I'm sure if I went back and played it now I'd think it looked like crap, but at that time, it completely blew me away. The graphics, the enemies (the underwater serpent men that spit green goo - wow those freaked me out), the unbelievable environments - it's a game I will always think of as one of the very, very best.

And anyone remember the privately-made multiplayer map Zeitkind? Spectacular.

Sure, Half-Life 2 was incredible too, but it didn't seem as huge a leap forward as Unreal did to me at the time.

P.S. Super Mario Galaxy *is* the best game I've played in a long, long time. I'm only 21 stars in, and already I don't want it to end.
