Super Mario Galaxy replaces Ocarina of Time as highest ranked photo

According to Game Rankings, Super Mario Galaxy is the highest rated game of all time, overcoming long-time title holder The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The recently released Nintendo Wii game has racked up either very high and even perfect numbers from the media outlets (we loved it!) that reviewed it, and Game Rankings gives it an overall average of 97.8%, barely beating Ocarina's 97.6%. Don't feel bad: Ocarina of Time is an amazing game, but Next-Gen points out that the title has held that top spot for nine years.

For some additional Nintendo fan ammo, check out number three on the list: Nintendo takes all three top spots, with Metroid Prime bringing up the rear.

It's probably worth noting that Half Life 2, in some form or another, takes three of the spots on the top-10 list.

Just to illuminate Qwerty's comment.

Qwerty is referring to the fact that Italian men make excellent lovers.
I wouldn't know personally, since I'm not gay, but I'm sure qwerty wasn't speaking out of inexperience or on a lack of any real information.

In any case, his comment was most definitely not a drive-by comment.

Go Galaxy!

I can't comment about what the future holds, but at the current time Galaxy is my favorite game ever. I am 70 stars in and I have loved nearly every second of it. The only thing that has rained on Mario's parade so far has been the Spring Suit.

and
2: Probably one of the only games my family would know how to get at a store.

Wait, hold up.

So what you're saying, is that game rankings recognizes more magazines in 2007 than they did in 98?

Na, there's no way, its not like more respectable magazines and the like have popped up in 9 years, obviously it means that Galaxy really is the greatest of all time despite being yet another rehashed Nintendo property.

Nintendo rocks, they push the same tired old characters in new settings AND OMG 11/10 BEST GAME EVER, BEST GAME OF ALL TIME.

Don't know if that means that Nintendo is just brilliant with marketing or that their primary fanbase is full of morons.

You know I was thinking, that if everything about the game was very similar but not the same (like let's say you collect pots and pans instead of stars)... and the main character is someone who isn't mario, would it have been rated the same? My vote: it depends on whether charles martinet voices the main character.

I still don't think OoT deserved to be up there.

It's a great game, but even at the time it came out I would have given it a 8.5 or 9 at best.

This just goes to show that you don't have to have online play, co-op, a robust multiplayer, or whatever. The game is FUN, and that's what counts. You put all these extras in a game and it can get homoganized and you lose what you set out to do. Which is make a game, I'll say that again, make a game, which should be fun first, the rest second.

Hey hey, we can all contribute here, Kyousuke makes some points.

Honestly though, is it just me or have a lot of these records been breaking recently? I'm the first to say that the past fifteen months or so have blasted the faces and bank accounts of many gamers away with very strong offerings, but still - I really can't say that the actual quality of games is going up more than review inflation is. I think maybe there needs to be a slightly better method of industry review than depending on publications that count advertisements for the games they are lauding as their biggest revenue source. It's hard to find reviews below 70% these days, and the 5-star system which would leave room for explanation has largely fell out of use. Do the gamerankings and metacritic numbers even really mean that much anymore?

That said, SMG is the best Mario I've played since SMB3. No kiddin'.
F Whipple's Avatar

@donkeykong

I was thinking the same thing as well. I'm going to say that it wouldn't score as high simply because Mario is one of the only acceptable "kiddy" characters. On the other hand I don't think nearly as much effort would've gone into the game if it wasn't mario. So not only does the name mario help it score higher but it brings out more in the developers.

eeeh. I dunno about all of this. I guess it is neat to be able to see what games recieved the highest average review scores from the different sources. But I don't think it is really indicator that this game is better than any other game. Even with OoT still being my favorite game ever, I have always that that there were better games than it. I guess it is important to point out the high review scores.

Just to point out as well, the 3 or so hours that I have played of Galaxy are fun so far. But I have found some inherent problems with the controls of the game so that automatically docks the score a bit in my mind. And that at this point i think Super Mario 64 was better.

OoT was a fantastic game back in it's day, but now it is getting on a bit. Not to be controversial for controversial's sake but there have been a lot of games that I would consider better than OoT, Twilight Princess being one of them. Is it really so hard to accept that SMG is being heralded above OoT?

People can say what they want about Nintendo, but this proves they make games of the utmost quality.

I've found the camera issues in Galaxy to be more troublesome than most of the reviewers, I still found it to be a lot of fun. The level design is the best I've ever seen in a video game to date, period.

@ Baron Calico:

What do you own besides Galaxy?

@ Jack:

OoT was replaced by TP!

@ Namelessted:

What "inherent problems with the controls" have you had while playng Galaxy? It has been perfect for me so far.

@ weedgan:

OoT was the first of its kind and so was Super Mario 64, but who's to say that later iterations can't improve the quality of each series.

@ Twiggy:

You have just invalidated all newspaper movie reviews.

@ Corak:

You are right, making the core game awesome is the most important thing! However if a game is quick to run through, then the developers better be offering a wide variety of modes and additional options or else I won't be buying it. There are a few exceptions to this...namely Portal...but whatever it was a good idea at the time (I guess the advanced levels in Portal count for something, though).

I prefer Galaxy to Ocarina. The more I play it, the more I'm amazed at the inventive gameplay and level design. It fills me with a sense of wonder, and every moment is FUN. It's refreshing that reviewers are recognizing and appreciating this. It's good to be skeptical of the latest, hyped-up thing, but for Ocarina to be forever enshrined as the pinnacle of gaming, never to be surpassed, strikes me as ridiculous. Mario wins.

Have you even played the game yet! Try not to comment on games you have not experienced yet, if you don't mind. In my opinion naia-the-gamer is correct; that Galaxy has the best level design I have ever seen. It is ridiculous how much variety there are in the levels and the activities Mario undertakes to earn each Power Star not to mention the creativity of the environments.

Don't get your panties in a twist because I disagree with a positive Mario comment. Not everyone jacks off to Mario. I've always enjoyed Zelda more. I have a Wii, a 360 and been playing games since intellivision & atari. Im not trying to be bias, I havn't beat the game, but I have played it.

Zelda : Twilight Princess could be a different story. I guess I'd have to beat them both in order to make a real judgement.

It's always interesting when people talk about Mario being nothing more than a rehashed nintendo property when practically every video game out rehashes the same doom and gloom end of the world where only you can save the world scenario.

Mario never has and never will take itself seriously. It's a childish game that taps into a special part of your psyche. Also remember there are cultural differences between Japan and ourselves. Mario is not perfect but far from a bad game. The level design and imagination of it is amazing. It's on par with Mario 64 which by today's standards would be shunned away.

I have a co-worker who refuses to play Mario because he feels it's too childish. "It's the same game. Give Mario a gun and Rocket Launcher and I'll be all over it." Meanwhile he doesn't see the irony that statement. I'm glad to see Mario be around again and relevant after 20 years! I'm also glad to see a game with Vibrant colors. Gezzz.. Can we lay off the earth tones for a year or 2!?

I'm pretty sure we all know, or at least should know, that comparing accumulated, average ratings of two different games, especially games that have 9 years in between them, is a pointless and futile argument. They are both amazing games. Some people prefer one more that the other. End of debate.

OoT was not replaced by TP. TP was in no way nearly as good as OoT.

as for teh inherent control problems. Have you played the game? There are so many times where there are problems with the camera. times when you can't even see yourself and you are running around and other times where the angle is so bad that there is no depth perception and you can't tell how close you are to a given enemy.

There are also problems with not knowing which direction you are going. There will be the spheres that when you walk around them and Mario gets on the reverse side of them, he will just randomly turn around and start going the other ways and it is confusing which direction you need to press to go the way that you want.

Don't get me wrong though. Galaxy has been a lot of fun for teh 3 or so hours that I played it and I look forward to playing more. But it it does have some problems that could have been tweaked a bit more.
