It seems Nintendo will be taking a more simplified, classic approach to level navigation in Super Mario Galaxy 2: unlike its predecessor, there won't be a hub world. Game Informer reports that like New Super Mario Bros. Wii and so many 2D Mario titles before it, SMG2 is going the "world map" route.
"We want players to focus on the joy of the action instead of getting to each game course," said famed designer Shigeru Miyamoto. "We wanted to make it as accessible as possible and as easy as possible for the players."
"Also, because we're going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars."
I wasn't particularly fond of Super Mario Galaxy's hub world, and the same could be said of New SMB Wii's world map. I like either approach when they feel inspired and imaginative; it's as simple as that. Good examples of this include the Donkey Kong Country games as well as the Banjo-Kazooie series.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Two words, CRANKY KONG.
SMW's world map is still the best, followed closely by SMB3. And I thought NSMBWii's maps were a huge improvement over the DS game.
Oh well, still gonna be a fantastic game! Though I hope Rosalina returns...
Oh well. Still definitely a GET. SMG was my favorite Mario game since 3.
Overall though I think hub-worlds are a waste of time. I'm all for simplified maps for level select. I hope that they tie it in with the world well though, like NMH2 did. In that game even though the map is a simple menu, it's still cool to travel from place to place with the way it zooms in.
Sad decision in my eyes but SMG2 will rock nonetheless.
That hub world was just annoying. Linear progression is always better than hubs, but a world map is acceptable. at least the map gives a sense of progression.
I would be fine if SMG2 had a hub world, I'd just like it to feel like a real, explorable "world" instead of a platform where I can run around and pick a level.
that's boring.
Oh well, I'll miss it but I'm sure it won't affect it in any way. Not having a hub hopefully means more detail and better design in the actual levels.
SMG is the best game of this generation, but its hub world stinks. SMG2 is looking better and better.
I hated SMG's hub world, it hurts the replay value in my opinion, as if you haven't played in a while you end up wandering around wondering "which of these huts do I need to go in, do I need to talk to this retarded star thing? Fuck it, I'm going to go play something else."
Lol. I remember Cranky Kong saying "Back in my day, we didn't have extra life" or something like that whenever I entered his "houses". He was like the Cid Highwind *from FFVII* of Donkey Kong Country 1
also, Banjo-Kazooie was the greatest game EVAR
Man, I am so juiced for this game to come out! And to think it will be here in a few months! Unbelievable. =D
Thank you, Nintendo!
Delfino Plaza sticks in my mind because there were several different ways to get to each level, without them being too far apart. The fact that you got the different suits to play around with made it all the much better.
