Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't have a hub world photo

It seems Nintendo will be taking a more simplified, classic approach to level navigation in Super Mario Galaxy 2: unlike its predecessor, there won't be a hub world. Game Informer reports that like New Super Mario Bros. Wii and so many 2D Mario titles before it, SMG2 is going the "world map" route.

"We want players to focus on the joy of the action instead of getting to each game course," said famed designer Shigeru Miyamoto. "We wanted to make it as accessible as possible and as easy as possible for the players."

"Also, because we're going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars."

I wasn't particularly fond of Super Mario Galaxy's hub world, and the same could be said of New SMB Wii's world map. I like either approach when they feel inspired and imaginative; it's as simple as that. Good examples of this include the Donkey Kong Country games as well as the Banjo-Kazooie series.

I think Banjo-Tooie had maybe the best hub world of any 3D platformer. It really felt like a massive, interconnected level.

I hate Galaxy's hub world. I didn't at first, but replaying the and trying to find all the comets by running around to different little huts and whatnot was totally tedious.

I can understand Banjo and Kazooie, but what was special about the world map in Donkey Kong Country?

I like the sound of a good old fashioned world map. The hub isn't bad but a map is just so much quicker and easier to remember than trying to go to every hut and find the galaxy you're looking for.

i enjoyed flying around the hub-world in Galaxy, so I hope that ti retained in some way. Heck, there is that little Mario shaped ship used to traverse the galaxy, who's to say we wont be able to stroll around there if we want, its only a smallish area, like the first planetoid level in Galaxy.

I liked Super Mario World's world map. NSMB and DKC have separate maps for each world. SMW had one large map for most of the game, making everything feel more connected and added a little sense of exploration and discovery.

I'm all for this shit. I'd much prefer the old-school world map approach. It really does make things simpler.

This is probably a good thing. I didn't hate Galaxy's hub that much, but world maps are generally better (although SM64's hub castle was pretty cool).

SMW's world map is still the best, followed closely by SMB3. And I thought NSMBWii's maps were a huge improvement over the DS game.

Aww, but I loved the Comet Observatory from SMG! :(

Oh well, still gonna be a fantastic game! Though I hope Rosalina returns...

Now get rid of "Starfinder" Mario and we'll have a game worthy of surpassing NSMBWii.

Aw, first bit of bad news concerning this promising title. It's not quite going to feel like a 3D Mario title without a fantastic hub riddled with secrets!

What Dreyfuss McTafferty said. I love exploring hub worlds and unearthing all the hidden surprises.

Oh well. Still definitely a GET. SMG was my favorite Mario game since 3.

Banjo-Kazooies hub world made the game feel like one big level instead of a a hub world, and I think it worked out pretty nicely.

Overall though I think hub-worlds are a waste of time. I'm all for simplified maps for level select. I hope that they tie it in with the world well though, like NMH2 did. In that game even though the map is a simple menu, it's still cool to travel from place to place with the way it zooms in.

I'd prefer SMG 2 not to have a hub world if its anything similar to the first game's. It felt like a chore having to run around to get to where you wanted to go.

I just popped in to say... DAMN! Why can't most Wii games or even some 360/PS3 games look as good as SMG/SMG2? Maybe it's the use of lighting and shadows that gives it that HD look. I'm not sure, but I hope new Legend of Zelda will look as good.

In the case of Donkey Kong Country, I'm definitely looking more toward 2 and 3. The original's world map was kind of bland-looking, while the other two games were filled with rad environment designs that perfectly meshed with the levels.

I did have trouble remembering what levels were where in Galaxy 1. Funny, I never thought about a world map like the old days. Guess I figured that was out since it was a 3d Mario game and thats how things had been since Mario 64.

That hub world was just annoying. Linear progression is always better than hubs, but a world map is acceptable. at least the map gives a sense of progression.

I really didn't like SMG's hub world, although I was a fan of Sunshine's and SM64's.

I would be fine if SMG2 had a hub world, I'd just like it to feel like a real, explorable "world" instead of a platform where I can run around and pick a level.

so how will you go back and play previous levels? just a menu?

Well, if we're comparing between other mario games then yes, SMG was definitely not the great. That belonged to Sunshine without a doubt.

Oh well, I'll miss it but I'm sure it won't affect it in any way. Not having a hub hopefully means more detail and better design in the actual levels.

^Better boring than tediously running around trying to hurry up and get to the hub world.

SMG is the best game of this generation, but its hub world stinks. SMG2 is looking better and better.

It seems a bit strange. THe 3D Mario games have always worked off of their ability to allow pseudo-freedom. I doubt this will really hurt the gmae, but it will definitely make it feel a little too easy.

I couldn't be happier about this decision. I detest the pointless wastes of time that are hub worlds. Except for small Demon's Souls type hubs where you fix your shit, level up, and then get back to the fun stuff.

I hated SMG's hub world, it hurts the replay value in my opinion, as if you haven't played in a while you end up wandering around wondering "which of these huts do I need to go in, do I need to talk to this retarded star thing? Fuck it, I'm going to go play something else."

Lol. I remember Cranky Kong saying "Back in my day, we didn't have extra life" or something like that whenever I entered his "houses". He was like the Cid Highwind *from FFVII* of Donkey Kong Country 1

@Jorge: SM64's Hub world was absolutely amazing, the first of it's kind, and IMO perfect in every way... The exploration and "secret" outside the castle, the interweaving and connections, jumping through the paintings, the "next door factor". Ah, the memories...

the great thing about the BK hub worlds is that they seemed like another world in themselves. you could collect jiggies, jinjos, and musical notes just like in the other levels. the entrance to these levels seemed like they belonged in the world as well. SMG's hub world was just a alternative to a load screen, it just didn't belong in the overall game.

also, Banjo-Kazooie was the greatest game EVAR

I feel like this is an intentional cop out. Obviously SMG2 has undergone some redicule for being very similiar to SMG, so maybe they did this to make it different, and then they wouldn't have to dream up a new Hub World that was different than the one on SMG1.

I'm glad they changed it. I liked SM64 especially Sunshine's hub, but Galaxy's was just so... clumpy.

Delfino Plaza sticks in my mind because there were several different ways to get to each level, without them being too far apart. The fact that you got the different suits to play around with made it all the much better.
