Super Mario Sunshine may be one of the worst selling Mario games ever, but that doesn't mean that it was all bad. Apparently Nintendo doesn't hate the game either, as portions of Super Mario Galaxy 2 clearly acknowledge the water-sports-and-dinosaur-vomit-packed Gamecube title. "Acknowledge" may be too weak of a word. If this video was the only thing I knew of Galaxy 2, I'd swear that it was a straight sequel to Sunshine.

The video only has about 15 seconds of game footage; short but sweet. Yoshi looks like he's lot more fun to ride in Galaxy 2 than he was in Sunshine, even if he isn't constantly puking anymore. That Bionic Commando-tongue of his more than makes up for it. Plus, if that statue is any indication, those half-naked, big-nosed weirdos are back! What are they called again? Finobarbitals? Finotypes? I know it was Fino-something...

I clearly need to bone up on my Mario-lore before I jump into Galaxy 2 on May 23rd.

Thanks, skawo90!

Well it's cold with no sunshine so Old Spice will bring it back and make ANOTHER sun.

DOUUUUBLE SUN POWER!

I really REALLY want to play this game and all these clips scream for me to buy the 1st one, which I really should do.

I know a lot of people who adore Sunshine, but I didn't like it enough to even bother finishing it. Even this kind of indirect homage in Galaxy 2 makes me antsy.

They're called Piantas, bro.

I'm cool with an SMS tribute as long as there aren't any blue coins.

Hmmm...

The tongue thing is "kind" of cool, but it's essentially the exact same thing as using your pointer on the blue gravity stars in Galaxy 1.

So far it looks like an expansion pack, which is cool I guess - I'll still buy it day one!

their called piantas, jon. as for your less than shining comments on sunshine, it really was a good mario title. i think the vacation angle got a little tiring by the end, but the game still stands as one of the toughest mario games yet. i liked it enough to 100% it, and would recommend it to anyone that would like to revisit the cube titles they missed last gen.

Sunshine was at its best when it tried its best to be bigger than 64, which most specifically was during boss battles.

I guess it also helps to have a slight bit of OCD with regards to cleaning things with water sprays...

Also, the bonus levels without the water pack were quite excellent, though kind of buried in the game a bit. Tough game, but definitely an odd bird.

@ Everyone- I actually really like Mario Sunshine. When it's at it's best, it's arguably the craziest and most exciting 3D Mario game, really wish they'd make a New Play Control version, as IR pointing would work perfectly for the game.

@ Magnalon- I think the tongue-work is a little different than the blue star stuff. The "Bionic Commando physics" of latching on, immediately being pulled up and flung, then needing to latch on again, isn't much like the slow, methodical gravitation to the blue stars.

I see what you're saying though; the tongue isn't INNOVATION. I still think it's awesome though.

SM Sunshine has to be one of the shittest games ever - doesn't deserve the title of a 'Super Mario' game.

My overall thought so far is that Mario Galaxy 1 was a huge, expansive, and complete game on it's own.

While I'm still going to love Galaxy 2, I kind of wish Nintendo waited a bit and put more resources into another original Mario game we'll all know and love. Or maybe a Luigi game/Luigi's Mansion 2.

While I cannot possibly comprehend the weird stolen footage-esque bookends Nintendo did there, I can say that May is going to be one of the best months ever for gaming!

Also, a whole galaxy of the Fino-people? How utterly horrifying...

Super Mario Sunshine might not of sold all the well in Japan, but it has sold over 6 million worldwide. So I'm sure Nintendo is not at all displeased with Sunshine and thus why they're putting some elements of it into SMG2.

Super Mario Sunshine could very well be the most finely-tuned, challenging, well-paced and well-polished 3D Mario game ever. I'm very happy that Nintendo is ignoring the haters and isn't pretending it didn't happen. Can't wait for SMG2!!

Don't know about you guys, but SMS was a very finely crafted 3D Mario. It was challenging and it changed up the classic platforming of its predecessor. I personally loved the setting as well, it was a huge change of pace for a Mario game, which led to some interesting stages. I guess some gamers just can't stand the idea of change.

Sunshine was brilliant and if you own a Wii you have no reason not to play it, what with full Gamecube back compatibility and all.

Wow man, Yoshi's voice is super-gay in this footage. It must be because of SMG 2 suggestive front cover.

Sunshine is probably my favourite of the 3D Mario games, with Galaxy being my least favourite. The original Galaxy was just far too linear.

Sunshine might be one of the weaker Mario platformers made, but its genuinely fun. It'll be nice to see a Galaxy level based on it. They need to include a balls-hard empty void level Star. Heck, I'd even appreciate some acapella music again, so long as its real and not MIDI again.

The warp pipe levels were exhilirating. Each one would end with me crouching closer to the tv, palms sweating, hoping I wouldn't lose that last Mario.

Sunshine wasn't nearly as bad as anybody thought, especially the "classic" levels.

Also, I was lying on the grass of Sunday morning of last week, indulging in my self defeats.

True story.

I completely agree with you. I, too, would love a new Mario game or, hell, even a new Luigi game, only that would take years for Nintendo to develop. Galaxy 2 used the original's engine, upped the difficulty(I hope) and added some cool new features. Also, Yoshi. For that, I'm super excited! A direct sequel to a Mario game is a wonderful thing! Especially one as good as Galaxy!
I can't wait! Thank you, Nintendo! =)
