A couple years ago, Jay "Exploding Rabbit" Pavlina had the idea to remake Super Mario Bros. with 100% accuracy down to the last pixel... with the added twist of being able to play as other NES stars such as Mega Man, Link, Samus, and Bill Rizer. Super Mario Bros. Crossover totally blew up, so Jay kept stoking the fires by adding new characters like Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden and Sophia from Blaster Master.
Within the next few months, the Version 2.0 update will go live, bringing more changes than ever before. In addition to even more new characters like Luigi and Bass, there will be new sprites, tilesets, and music that mimic SNES and Game Boy styles. The levels themselves will still be the same Super Mario Bros. stages we know and love, but if you want the game to look like, say, Super Mario Land 2, you can.
Oh, and the hero from Demon Returns in Game Center CX 2makes an appearance as well. That's a pretty cool surprise, I'd say! Keep an eye on the game's page for whenever those changes go live.

Meet the rest of the team
I've always wanted to do this since my SNES days, and video game's stable of characters grew to the point where an "all-stars" situation could be realized: I'm glad someone finally did it. I was a fan of the original, but the inclusion of Bass pretty much means I'm all over this.
Here's hoping someday Mega Man 11 comes out and bridges MM to the X series, and explains exactly what happened with Wily's creations Zero and Bass.

Am I mistaken, or are there Super Mario 3 levels peppered in the video?
Pretty damn cool. Makes me wish Nintendo would get properly invested in the idea of smaller, digital releases. Who knows what kind of awesome retro stuff they could come up with.
What does this guy have againts Sonic anyway? 8-bit Sonic would've ruled in SMC, now that their's 16-bit styles as well, there's even less reason not to have him.

No it's just a SMB3 skin pack for SMB1 I think.
Sonic and Mario were both in SSBB, so I don't see why this game shouldn't have MOAR SANIC.
*Super Mario Land 2
