This could get interesting.
This resurgence of classic style shit makes my rude bits excited.
ahaha, yes because those characters don't look like generic shitty 8-bit characters at all.
Seriously, asking to make a Kickstarter based around an 8-bit game is a fucking joke.
Seriously tho', it isn't like he's come out of nowhere on this. He's been doing this for ages and says "Look guys, I'd like to make something real, that I can say I did this and sell it and look more credible than shitty Flash games". I can respect that.
It's extremely clear that you did not watch the video. He makes it extremely obvious that these new characters are super-satires of their original NES inspirations, the game will be playable in both 8-bit AND 16-bit, it will have 4-player online co-op, and be on PC and Mac (and probably iOS and Android). The 8 people working on the game either have full-time jobs so they can't put much time into the game or they don't have a job at all, so they can't even pay rent or buy food. With the money from this Kickstarter, the ones without jobs will be able to work on the game without fear of if they'll have to go without eating today to pay their rent and the ones with full-time jobs can quit and work for their new studio Exploding Rabbit exclusively, meaning the game will get done quicker and probably better.
Kickstarter is a great idea for this project as there is no way they could get the funds for this game and fledgling development company without it. Even if they tried to get a publisher, I doubt they could or would even want to, as any sort of restriction on their creative freedom would severely hamper this game.
Do you walk by street fairs and bitch loudly about all those people trying to sell their arts and crafts? Do you scream at girl scouts when they're out selling cookies?
Dev systems for Android and Apples devices, a license for Unity Pro, plus payment for the eight people working on the game. THAT'S where the money goes.
I guess. I'm not afraid of saturation or anything at this point, it's just that I like the idea of sticking it to the man in a tribute more than going legit with a mere homage.
Some people are sickened by the idea that other people are investing funds into something they think should be invested in something else. The very same things they like, as you put it. Every dollar put in something someone doesn't like is a dollar that will never go to something they think deserves it more.
Capitalism.
Kickstarter hate is both righteous and valid, and for all you haters, YOU are the cause.
Just the tip of the iceberg, how big of an absolute moron would you have to be to fund a millionaire to make his next game? Double fine kickstarter = huge success.
How stupid would you have to be to fund OBVIOUS scam artist? Gaming related kickstarters exposed as scams left and right.
How oblivious to fund some hipster to not have to work a day in thier lives? 100's of kickstarters, all the time.
Seriously, cry us haters a river, your the oblivious ingrates that have made folks feel this way.
I understand that in the original SMBC it was nifty to have the sprites. But now they have the chance to create a new IP or something with a new style. But, i'm sorry, we can't have that. We need something that people will want to buy because it's something that has been outdated for years.
Anyone else have the video show up in the post below with a blank white spot where a video should be in this post?
Sounds interesting. May kick a few dollars his way. It saddens me to see people hate Kickstarter just because someone famous used it. In essence, you're saying Tim Schaefer's involvement has ruined the site for you. What about all the people that used it before Tim got involved, or the ones that had plans to use it but weren't ready to? Fuck them?
And yes, he's obviously not using "high-end" graphics but that doesn't mean they're "outdated". Many indie games use simpler or what I would call "basic" graphics BECAUSE they are indie. They don't have the resources to make very graphically intense games. Even if this particular studio could, he said in the beginning of the video that he thinks Legend of Zelda (NES) is epic and gamers now think they need Mass Effect 3 or something similar to be epic. That's why he's going with these graphical styles (8-bit and 16-bit).
Watch him Let's Play his own game (link's on the site), and you'll see what I mean. He has a "thing" going on.
I played Super Mario Crossover briefly... honestly it was kinda boring, mostly because the SMB levels are ancient. Level design that plays to the different characters will be the key to this game.
*clicks on the kickstarter link*
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
I still can't believe you're still being an asshole about it. It's their money, they can use it how they want to. Pulling this shit is just making you look bad.
I still can't believe you're not aware that the Super Retro Squad won't be a flash game. SMB crossover was a flash game. This one will not be a flash game.
