Sup Holmes talks with up-and-comer Sophie Houlden

2:10 PM on 09.02.2012

[Destructoid's Director of Communications Hamza Aziz asked Jonathan Holmes to make a show called 'Sup, Holmes?' so that Destructoid could later sell a t-shirt that says 'Sup, Holmes?' on it. This is that show. Subscribe to the podcast feed and find more episodes here.]

Check out this WIP footage of one of Sophie Houlden's current projects, an iOS title called Leaper. That's just one of the many games she's plugging away at. The first game of Sophie's that I'd ever played was a little abstract obstacle course iOS title SWIFT*STITCH (available now for free!), but since then I've discovered a veritble cornucopia of titles in her library (many of them created for the online game jam Ludum Dare). My favorite is probably the The.Domestic. It's about how having a job is the worst. It's just like Animal Crossing thrown in reverse. Hey, that sort of rhymed!

We'll be talking to Sophie about what it's like to transition from making free games to commercial titles for iOS, what got her into game development, how she'd like the industry to evolve moving forward, Guild Wars 2 and whatever else we get excited about. Please join us in the chat when the show goes live at 1pm PST/4pm EST! Who knows? We may form a lasting emotional connection!

Checking in with Renegade Kid on Moon, Cult County, and more

Holmes had an extra long interview with Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham during PAX East, and it covers all the games the small studio is currently working on. It's a nice showcase of every thing they got going on, and biggest of all is Cult County. It's their upcoming survival horror game, and there's just under two weeks left on their Kickstarter.more

See why Mushroom 11 was one of my favorite games at PAX East

Alex Bruce, the man behind Antichamber, was at PAX East with no game to show off at all. He was simply there purely to help out other indies. I saw a lot of indies supporting other indies at PAX, as a matter of fact. In this...more
