Its a stupid question. The two options Pc gaming vs console gaming is not mutually exclusive.

When people buy a new PC, sure they may pick up their PC gaming, but once their PC starts to become outdated (face it, most people don't upgrade their systems every other month) they'll fall back on their consoles they've been playing with all along.

At least in my case, I seriously PC gamed when HL1 came out, and when HL2 came out, because I bought new computers at those points in time, but the whole time in between I owned all 3 previous gen systems at one point and now I own a Wii and don't touch PC games any more.

Also, MMOs IMO are still a semi-niche market even with 8 million WoW users. Its the same people who keep playing these MMOs, often with multiple subscriptions. I still, on principle, refuse to pay a monthly fee for a video game, and I'm not going to play a game where I merely lvl. I'm with Summa on this.

The real debate should be whether or not the success of WOW is bad for the MMO industry. Not whether or not WOW is bad for the console industry, obviously.
Apples and oranges, people.

Well according to Summa, nobody cares about the MMO industry except MMO players. Which is true. I really don't give a rats ass about MMO games or WoW's impact on them. The only things WoW has given me is Leroy Jenkins which was a cheap laugh and that South Park episode which was sadly very true to life for so many people.

Nice job there, Summa.

I mean, I've been on live television once (asking a question eight years ago, in a talk show here in Brazil), and damn! that's no easy task.

The question was silly, you were being hurried and cut up all the time, and still managed to be almost flawless (you could have done without those pimples, especially the one in your forehead =D).

Nevertheless... WAY TO GO - D-TOID FTW!

live tv is very awkward...i agree.

on a serious note, very nicely done rob.

i remember when i did a live tv spot that i said something like "we doubled the size of the walk-in humidor, hence the humidor is twice as big"...NO SHIT?! i felt stupid. and i constantly said 'uh'. and uh.

so yeah, winner winner chicken dinner summa.

And in the past month, how many MMOs have been announced in development? The fact that a Conan the Barbarian MMO is in the works really tickles my humor bone. Seriously someone should count them in the various articles on Destructoid. This is a market with predictable gameplay (lvling up and perhaps pvping) and a monthy subscription. It's very susceptible to market saturation and will probably burn a lot of developers.

Unless someone devises a new plan of action, namely some form of entertainment that doesn't just involve lvling and pvping, I don't see these new MMOs doing so well.

I didn't know that PC gaming taking over consoles was an issue, wow, surprise to me!

Anyways, yeah, the chick was an idiot WoW addict. Burning Crusade is going to make some people start playing WoW, but I'm guessing it's going to sell about *gasp* 8 million copies (which is a lot mind you, just not the 20 million the chick wanted people to think).

@Bluefision
'New' MMO's are thought of and created all the time. Whether you like WoW or not, it's a huge success and people want to copy it. During AGC I actually went to a talk (forget which one) where they actually addressed that when a lot of people try to sell an MMO, WoW is mentioned somewhere in their pitch.

She forgets to factor in the the amount of $$ you spend on a gaming rig to play WoW. Which is much more than any console out there, even PS3. Next time pay someone in the studio a couple bucks to cut her mic if you both ever get back on the show.

WoW is probably the best MMO on the market today.

I guess it's too bad that I, personally, have no interest in MMOs.

I agreed with Summa almost entirely. However, unlike most of the previous commenters, who apparently thought she was just a raving lunatic, I thought that Karen Chu had some valid points as well... at least, up until the end when she was talking about how the "communities would react" regarding having WoW on a console, which I took to mean that she considered console players to be too... I dunno, backwards and primitive to be allowed to step foot on the hallowed soil of Azeroth or something. Then again, given that your stereotypical Xbox Live users are potty mouthed 11 year olds, maybe she has a point? *shrug* I have as much interest in Xbox Live as I do WoW.

But the basic premise of "Will WoW kill console gaming?" was asinine. Yeah, this one game on the PC, no matter how good it may be on its own merits, is going to kill the console market as a whole. Right. I mean, it's not like you guys were really disagreeing about anything, per se. It was just that the whole thing was trying to compare apples to oranges.

Its amusing that many, if not everyone, is using a PC to read this website and yet that old argument that a PC costs more than a console keeps coming up.

Yes Consoles are great value for money and future proof but they don't offer the flexibility that a PC does and thats exactly why you own a PC. Also unless you're planning on spending stupid money and running games at stupid settings you really don't need more than a couple hundred dollars in upgrades to stay at a technology level that will exceed consoles within 2-3 years into their lifespan.

WoW was a good lesson in bringing a format to a larger audience while maintaining a hardcore loyalty. It'll be interesting if other developers extend that school of thought to different genres.

As far as PC vs Consoles. Well they can and do co-exist nicely. Although it is very worrying that people still get all wet over console FPS games.

I don't think of WoW or other MMO's to really be games, the visuals are where the similarities end. A video game is something you play for entertainment, like you would watch a movie or read a book, where you go through a story. Online games are similar in that sense, only replacing the story element with the fun of playing with others. But someone who plays an MMO has different motives than the traditional gamer. Where gamers play for fun, MMO players spend endless amounts of hours online because they become addicted to the feeling of achievement (leveling up, getting armor, whatever), it makes them feel good and they neglect other parts of their lives in order to get that feeling. It's pretty pathetic and sad. These MMO's are designed to hook you, but then you find yourself spending more and more time to get the feeling of accomplishment, and it just sucks time and money out of people. In short, gamers are cool, MMO players are the new breed of geek.

I think what also needs to be said is that a lot of MMO players can't stop because they feel they've invested too much time and money into it. They have a fake sense of value (far less than what they'll get on IGE, anyway)

1) Summa is not a total cretin. Nor is Karen. The same can't be said for a lot of people in the gaming media. I think they both had a great showing considering the time allotted.

2) Back the eff off of G4 and the cutting them off. Live TV, folks. Live TV.

3) What, we get some "major" television face time and then for the rest of the night we're done posting shit? It's been hours. Shit is happening. Someone, somewhere, is doing something stupid with their Wii. World of Warcraft got a few hundred more subscriber. An Xbox 360 is overheating. Some girl who played a game once is taking off her clothes. SOMEONE POST SOMETHING.

I would, but I've been drinking champagne all night and can't do anything beyond posting comments.

You're playing a video game whether you're playing Zelda in the dark, on your couch, by yourself, or whether you're playing WoW in the dark, in front of your PC, with 8 million other people.
There's varying degrees of loserdom in both camps, and to someone sitting on the outside (like people in the demographic that G4 is failing at appealing to) you look like a dork. Embrace it.

Nice first appearance Rob! Hope they have you on again. the segment was far too short and I know there were several things you wanted to get off your chest that you weren't able to, but all in all it was awesome to see you up there on live TV!

Seriously makes me proud that I've been a part of this site for so long. Not even a year in and look where things are. Can't wait to see what will be going on this time next year!

This chick won't STFU! Summa I would have just gave her an internet donkey punch. As much as I love MMOs I have to agree with Summa, people who like the game will get the expac and those who don't won't get it no matter how friggin cool it is. I never played Halo for Xbox and how big was that game, I didn't want an xbox and didn't wanna spend the money.
