Suit filed against Sony for Buzz series of games photo

Bzzt! Sony seems to have buzzed in on a bit of trouble concerning their PS2 quiz title Buzz!.

Buzztime Entertainment filed a suit against SCEE for the alleged violation of several trademarks. They are demanding that all infringing products be recalled and destroyed, as well as asking for a payment of damages. The company claims that Sony Europe is guilty of "malicious, fraudulent, willful and deliberate" trademark violations, reports GamesIndustry.biz.

So, who the hell is Buzztime Entertainment? They make those silly bar and restaurant trivia games, as well as run games for mobile devices and television. Sony told GamesIndustry.biz: "We are aware that a complaint has been made against Buzz in the United States, but as is our normal procedure in matters like these we will not be making any public statement."

I wonder if this will put a damper on the previously planned PS3 release of a Buzz! title. What do you think? Does Buzztime have a valid case?

It's strange that they waited several years before filling suit. I think they may just be fishing for money and/or press but I'm no lawyer!

Shoot, I love Buzztime Trivia and go to my local BW3 to play it regularly... I've never played Buzz! but I really have to wonder how different trivia games can really be. I mean time limit for a question, clues as the clock runs down - come on that's in practically all trivia games I've ever played.

In a word, No. I believe the sticking point is the design of the Buzz controller but if that is the case then why aren't they going after Microsoft? Who blatantly ripped the Buzz buzzer off for Scene It.

The only other thing I can think of that would justify this suit is that Buzztime are trying to copyright the multiple choice quiz. Good luck with that one guys.

Copyright the multiple choice quiz you say? Why that's outrageous...it was I who copyrighted that. I also have the rights to all true/false questions as well. I also invented the question mark.

I hope the fail epicly. I really sick of hearing of all these stupid lawsuits of people sueing over stupid crap like buzzer or what not. if you're gonna sue, it should be over something freaking unique.

That's funny. Anytime I see this game in stores I get mad, it looks so stupid. Do you think I could help out and go burn copies of it in stores?

This is more about the use of the word "Buzz" in association with a home video trivia game rather than the controller. If they can show Sony is benefiting from customers who mistakenly believe the game is connected to Buzztime Entertainment (there's a lot of people who play the bar/home games), they probably have a case.

Buzz! is actaully a decent family trivia game. Bought it for my wife for Christmas. Scene It! is fun but I yearn for more than movie questions sometimes. ;)

Sony did their legal research on all this beforehand. They don't even call it Buzz in countries where there is already a celebrity or company called Buzz (I think it's just called "The Big Quiz" in Portugal and the quizmaster, Buzz, is just called "The Host").

Sounds like another pointless suit in an attempt to gain money from a successful company. That'll get kicked out of court, as usual.

Yep. Let's sue somebody over the use of a shared word in the english language. They should also dig deeper and sue the Board of Education for using multiple choice quizzes in schools.

Niero, I think that only works in the Community Blogs (what did we decide was the abbreviation for that?). See shitty post #1,117,004,387 for details. You know the one.

Every post is a repost.

No game is original.

Trivial Pursuit called, he's suing every game with questions...ever.

So Sony is going to drop the ball with this in court, then say that "quiz games are the past, counting games are the future!" a la Sixaxis and rumble.

"Buzz != Buzztime" in the same way as "Jerk != Jerkface".

I'd like to see the specific trademarks that have been violated.
