Suda wants to remake Michigan: Report from Hell photo

Michigan: Report from Hell may have had one of the worst titles for a videogame ever (especially considering the fact that it took place in Chicago and around Lake Michigan, not actually in the state of Michigan), but that doesn't mean that the Grasshopper Manufacture developed game wasn't up to par in the interesting category. In the game players took on the role of a cameraman covering different paranormal stories, and basically had to beat each level before running out of tape. It was especially interesting because nearly the entire game was viewed through the camera lens. I hear it was pretty darn cool in the artsy, Suda51 sort of way, but haven't got a chance to play it myself.

That may change as Suda himself has expressed interest in remaking the game. In a recent Gamasutra interview in which the interviewer basically starts interviewing himself, Suda said that he'd be very interested in remaking Michigan. "In fact, I'd like to make Michigan again, or something like it. There's a Spanish horror film called REC, and when I watched it, I realized it was pretty much Michigan, right there. I still have a lot of ideas along those lines, and I'd love to work with Spike (the game's publisher) sometime to make a new Michigan or a remake."

Enticing, no? Considering how impressively the DS remake of Flower, Sun and Rain went I would be all for a port of the game to my Wii or an all out remake or the concept for any system. However, according to the interviewer, this may never actually happen as Sony has said that they wouldn't re-release the game since it didn't have enough gameplay. I'm not sure what that means, but it still leaves two other platforms open for the taking.

...There's a city in Michigan called Hell and it didn't even take place in the state?

Wow.

Anyway, I've never even heard of this game, so I'm all for a remake.

I've always wanted to try Michigan since I read about it years ago. SO I'd be up for a remake if that means a chance of the US getting it...

Oh, I did a whole blog about this game for my Gamer Obscura series! The short version: It could have been great, but it's crap.

The long version:

I want a remake of The Silver Case first, so that the ending of FSR will make any sense :(

I read somewhere that the DS port was completed, but then he decided it wasn't good enough and wanted to completely redo the gameplay.

I know, right?! There's always someone (myself, this time) that always finds something iffy in the way he does interviews. Just look at the last part of interview; he goes on about voyeurism then talks about the clothes Suda wears - WTF?

I heard Europe got this game, but the only way to see the gameplay is on Youtube.
It is interesting, and a bit funny at moments, but SCEA need to stop being dicks about what games makes it across our borders. Let Suda makes games for you, dammit!

Michigan's Upper Peninsula should belong to Wisconsin. Michigan is a shady thief. Just saying.

I've only seen a small amount of footage of the game on X-Play, but it seemed really interesting. If Suda can pull it off, I'll be willing to give it a go.

@ D-503: Ohio sucks. It's a well known fact. It pains me to even drive through the small amount needed to get to Cedar Point (Cedar Point sucks, also a well known fact. There is no need to wait 3 hours for 1 ride)

@ runtheplacered: I grew up in the LP now go to school in the UP. It's the same state and Wisconsin is lame. Not as bad as Ohio... but pretty lame. Oh, and Packers suck

Anything similar to [REC] would be awesome. Make it so, Suda.

It pains me to say this but Michigan the game is still probably better than the state.

@ HEL105

Agreed. Such a great movie, a game like that would be awesome if done correctly. I've never heard of the Michigan game, but anything like that movie would be sweet.

@Ratsor

Ceder Points kicks all sorts of ass, just cause you couldn't hold your appletini down on The Raptor doesn't mean you get to hate on my state. Also, llllloyd Car. Mr Rodriguez isn't any better...is he still telling you Mich. fans you care to much about football?

Anyway, Quarantine which from what I can tell is basically the same thing as [REC] was awesome so consider me interested.

@LividChihuahua Yeah, I like how Hollywood remade that movie immediately after the release. They're so out of material for horror movies that they spend their time waiting to steal foreign releases.

First, change the title of the game. Second, why not release it on the PSN?

I've never heard of this game, but it sounds interesting. And if anyone is gonna make a remake of something that interesting, even better, only Suda can.

Hmm. A [REC] game would be great, but I don't see a lot of replay value in it. The photography in that film is great because they don't frame the scares "correctly," letting them happen at the edge of the shot and really catching you off guard. Once you know when the monster is going to leap out and can point your camera right at it, it's not quite the same.

Also, I anticipate the moaning of players that the camera turns too slowly. Because they've all carried shoulder mounted camera rigs and know that it's totally easy to broadcast the news while back-pedaling down a hallway with a rabid dog following after.

I had a feeling this was coming after the Flower, Sun and Rain remake

I've always been fascinated by this game even if it is supposedly flawed, bring on the remake!
