Suda 51: No More Heroes needs a new platform photo

Eccentric game designer and all around mentalist f*ckpot Suda 51 has lent a little more fuel to the fire started by Marvelous earlier, stating that No More Heroes "needs" to move away from the Wii in order for it to have any legs. The cult design hero has stated that he wants NMH to be big, but it'll take looking beyond the little white waggle box in order to make it happen.

"I really want to make NMH a big franchise," states Suda, "and with this second episode have bigger success. I’m putting a lot of care into developing this IP, as I feel there’s a lot of potential.

"I think this is the last NMH that is going to be developed on Wii. To expand NMH to new possibilities, we need a new platform. Wii is a great platform, but we’ve done everything we can with it now."

It's not often you'll see a game designer who thinks that moving away from the Wii is a key to success, but most people don't think quite like Goichi Suda. NMH probably stands a chance of getting into the hands of more appreciative gamers on the Xbox 360 or PS3, but at the end of the day, the game's success hinges on one thing and one thing only -- marketing.

The first game was amazing and i loved it (Not to mention the fact that Ive restarted the game already just yesterday). Where ever they take the franchise i will buy it. I know its gonna be abit strange since it wont stick to its old roots of swinging the wii remote here and there but i think this idea could work. I'll surely buy any NMH game on any console. Lets just hope this wont kill or hurt the franchise alot. I think Suda can pull it off.

I don't see NMH as a niche title. Little King's Story and Harvest Moon? Sure. NMH? Hell no. It's a free world game with some odd artistic design. That's not niche. Until I see some sort of age-based statistic indicating that the Wii caters to mostly senior citizens and the younger crowd (6-12), I'll hold to my opinion that it's the user base that's determining the sales here.

@Waquan
It's rated M (Strike 1). It's heavily stylized (Strike 2). It has a biting sense of humor (Strike 3). It's main character is an Otaku with a penchant for wrestling (Strike 4?). It screws around with the player (Shrugs) Strike 5).

I could keep going. I'm just saying that the game seems like it really only sells to 15-35 male nerds. It's out of the hands of the older people and children. It's out of the Gears of War Gamer since he sees it as "Not Hardcore enough" because of it's use of color and it's style of humor. It's out of the hands of the impatient gamer because of the money collecting necessary to advance (although that one can/should be fixed). I don't know who this game sells to other than the people who frequent this site.

I'm not saying that NMH didn't use Wii's strengths, but the fact that Suda may be moving the series to a different console really says something about how he cares for his games.

I'm not trying to say the Wii is complete crap, but I can't think of anyway to say it otherwise.

O DEAR LORD YES~!!! I'll buy the next one but I'd rather they scrapped it and put it on ps3/360.

Alex, yeah, I suppose the free world element was kinda basic, still, I think a lot of people will be drawn to it for that aspect, and once they're sucked in they might find out they actually enjoy the meat of the game (i.e. the outrageous (and often hilarious) and addictive minigames and satisfying boss battles). I'm saying there's enough side stuff (as basic as they may be) to bait in the more close-minded individuals.

Although, I guess when it comes down to it we'll just have to 'wait and see', but try to remember my position on this issue ;)

Xbox gamers are welcome to it. The game really isn't anything special. In fact I would go as far to say that reviews of NMH were only so favourable because of its interesting style. If Suda had concentrated on delivering a 'finished' product, then perhaps sales of NMH would've been better, even though it sold pretty well on the most popular console in the world. It is a complete myth that the Xbox is for the hardcore demographic.

srsly, that makes no sense
this is not good for the wii as it will be losing one of it's only "proper" games, well it's still making a shit-ton on he casual stuff so I doubt they will care

Does this mean that we'll see a graphically improved No More Heroes and less waggle?

I'm actually totally OK with this, as much as anyone might want to disagree, sales tell me that even if the Wii does have the largest install base, the core part of that install base is around a 1/4 or less (by my own estimations), why that is so?, i already did a whole entry about this before in my personal blog, go read it if you want, but back to the main point, if Suda51 feels he'll get a better reception in other consoles, he's got every right to try, will it work or not? IMHO i believe until we actually see the results we can't tell for sure, what is definitely true is that by going multiplatform he'll reach a far larger audience than a single console, specially one that is ruled by casual games and which parent company is just barely starting to realize (maybe too late) that casual isn't the only market out there. Best of luck for ya Suda.
