Suck it, movies: Modern Warfare 3 made a quick $1 billion photo

Do you care how much money entertainment products bring in? Hooray, rich people! Then you'll be interested to know, perhaps, that Activision has announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 earned $1 billion in sales within 16 days. This information comes from "Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information."

You know what this means, don't you? Avatar's race to $1 billion took 17 days, so clearly this is important. So important. Videogames, everybody -- turns out quite a few of us enjoy them enough to scrounge up $60 without much hesitation.

I always try and tell people that video games are the most successful form of entertainment monetarily, but I'm always reminded that the price of gaming is far higher than music or movies.

We still pay 10 where we live. If it ever got that high the movie industry will collapse.

Robert Kotick you silly ceo the only reason CODMW3 made a billion dollars in 16 days is because of the elite service. when more than 6million ppl pay for that yes your gunna make a shit load of money, its not because you sold 1billion dollars worth of games. and the fact you compared your revenues to the Avatar taking 17 days to do so is ignorant. cost of a bluray 30 bucks, dvd 20 bucks, video game 60 bucks, elite service 50 bucks. Basically your saying you sold less than of what james cameron did. an even bigger spread if we are talking about box office with 13$ tickets lol

Yeh I was gona say, basing tickets off prices here(15-20) that would mean theres still roughly 3x more people who watched Avatar than there are who bought MW3.

Although, now Im curious as to how the production costs compare.

Where I live tickets cost 15 bucks. It went up after Avater because 3D cost more, but after Avatar they keep the pricing.

Morons, who cares that agame costs $60 or a service costs $50. You think CEOs care about measuring in people? They measure in dollars, and a VideoGame made 1 Billion FASTER than any movie on earth has been able to. That's what they care about.

If you made movie tickets $60 bucks, guess what, movies would make FAR less. The demand for games is higher when you can charge more and still make that kind of gross.

/end econ for idiots.

I would love to know what the cost of production was on this game. MW2 took in over a billion in revenue and cost $200 million to make. Avatar's production budget was rumoured to be between $280 and $460 million (production + marketing) and it's box office pulled 2.7 billion, with another 190 million in DVD sales. That puts the total current take at just under 3 billion.

It seems like games haven't quite surpassed blockbuster movies yet, but that's really not far off.

Games may cost $60, but thats one purchase for everyone in your household while if your whole household goes to the movies, you have to pay $10 per person so the ratio of money per household for movies and games probably very similar.

I go to weekday matinees because they are $5 in the neighboring town. :) But on topic: I bet it costs more to make and advertise a movie like Avatar (which sucked hard) than it does to make and advertise a game like MW3.

how i wish the anime/manga industry is also getting this sum of money.

the biggest i have seen selling is around 200k-300k

and that's it's LIFETIME sales.

COD makes 20x it's amount in just a few days.

god damn.

i bet if anime's make this kind of money we would see tons of japanese publishers publishing their titles themselves instead of outsourcing it to medium-ok quality like funimation.

we would truly see anime's in true HD O____O

heck compare Bakemonogatari Blu ray to any anime that funimation releases and you'll see a BIG difference in quality.

also people seem to forget most movies are only 1 hr-2 hr, 3-4 being the most.

while COD single player are probably 5-6 hours. the multiplayer gives people at least hundreds of hours of entertainment.

IMO it's a combination of the higher price tag and the fact it's primary feature is as a multiplayer game, which gives consumers an incentive to buy, rather than pirate. And it's popularity obviously.

This was not surprising, expected even. What blew my mind was how many Elite subscriptions were actually sold for $50. WOW. I joined the herd and got my hardened edition, then promptly sold my Elite membership and founders status so the rest ended up costing me less than $40 after tax.

And I'm NOT a fan of Activision, but did anybody notice how much they have contributed to the "Call of Duty endowment fund"? Kudos to them for that.

totally isn't worth paying $60 for the equivalent of an expansion, especially since it only took a year to make. these hyper similar fps' should be $40 or less IMO.

I spent many, many hours playing the multiplayer of MW1, MW2, and Black Ops. I absolutely loved all 3 of those multiplayer experiences.

Today, I sold my copy of MW3. IMO, the maps are very, very poorly designed. In the previous CoD iterations that I mentioned, the game catered to different play styles. The crap maps found on MW3 pretty much all cater to the Rambo play style. If you're style isn't to just run around like a monkey, you won't do very well. Almost nobody snipes. The medium-to-long range game is almost nonexistent.

If you like the game, then kudos to you. This long-time CoD fan, however, think that the multiplayer in this game is absolutely broken; thanks mostly to the poor map design.

Ah, well. I'll just need to buy into the Tribes: Ascend beta, I guess :)

people commenting on how the price of movies makes a difference

the fact that games cost more and there are less of us actually makes it more impressive il give you a quick example

Apple, the reason apple is considered the one of the best company's in the world is not because they make the best phone or sold the most phones, iphones peaked at 37% market share that is significant but not that impressive what is really impressive is the fact people paid 600/900 $ for them that's why apple will still have better earnings that Samsung despite being outsold by Samsung
