Study: Violent videogames can help stop nightmares photo

It's not every day that one gets to promote a positive study about videogames, so it's with pleasure that I bring you this slice of happiness -- videogames may help some people to cope with nightmares.

Jayne Gackenbach has turned the "games desensitize people" argument on its head, theorizing that if games do indeed desensitize people to horrific images, they may be beneficial to those who suffer from harrowing dreams. The study was conducted with soldiers to see if they would sleep better after their stressful experiences.

"I would see many soldiers, in combat, with PSPs or anything we could hook up to 220v electricity," said the researcher. "When soldiers weren’t on patrol, we often had violent war games on our systems. It was weird. Like we didn’t get enough violence. They’re taking (Playstation 3′s, XBox 360′s and other consoles) into the field and playing them all the time, And it turns out, there may be a good reason to let them do that."

Of course, no study is gospel, but it's interesting to think about. Soldiers definitely game as much as anyone else, and it seems that playing simulated violence might prove cathartic after dealing with the real-world stuff. In any case, it's better than suggesting that games make people go out and do raping.

I don't really think there's anything else that can be said here.

This just proves that real violence and videogame violence are VERY different things.
That said, I have lucid dreams almost nightly. Dunno if it has anything to do with games though.

Games don't necessarily have to be violent to provoke nightmares. I've played many Nintendo games that scared the everlasting shit out of me as a child.

But that's true. I usually have nightmares when sth bad happens during the day and don't play videogames to relieve stress.

This study makes absolute sense to me. Games can be empowering, put you in the place of someone who overcomes all the odds, slays the bad guys. If you can make it happen in a game, why not your subconscious?

I 100% agree with this! As a prior military man with PTSD the FPS shooters is an excellent way to challange it. My wife will even send me to play when I get too stressed out.

I suppose that I have videogames to blame for not having any more of those wonderful night terrors. Not only do I have to think up other crap to try to sculpt, it leads to a greater frequency of 'close calls' when sleeping too soundly (though for those with weaker constitutions/bladders, nightmares apparently make excellent laxatives).

I'm going to have to start fixating on the specter of the Red Rings of Death/Yellow Lights of Death/Blue Screen...of Doom or missing out on good pre-order bonuses(for variety's sake)if I want to get some good unsound fitful thrashing about in some night soon.

Will Sleep Specialists start prescribing play sessions of Resident Evil to help patients get a good night's rest?

Will I have to significantly up my dosage of cuteness to counter-act the effects of the massive overdose of Survival Horror and horro-themed FPS over the years?! I guess that I'll be needing me some Okami-Den,Pokemon or Animal Crossing or Ilomilo or something in the near future..

The thing about it is the people that suffer from nightmares don't sleep and end up tweeting at 5:00 in the morning.

I remember being on my quest to 200 hours in Fallout 3 and having dreams about being shot at by super mutants followed by being shot in the head at the Statesman hotel pretty vividly thanks to videogames

Jayne Gackenbach was my professor for intro level psychology when I got into uni. This is the second time I've seen a study of her's mentioned here on dtoid.

So here's a few of her dreams&games tangents she'd go off on in class :p

From what some preliminary results were showing, there is a correlation between lucid dreaming and hours spent gaming. She said more often than not, gamers are more likely to have lucid dreams than non-gamers.

On the flip-side, and this was just a hypothesis of hers, which I think is more or less true, is that gamers dream LESS than non-gamers. Her theory was that, if dreams are "simulations" to prepare us for real life events, then games help to fill that allotted "simulation time". Hence why many of us gamers in the class when surveyed, "How frequently do you dream?" answered less frequently than non-gamers.

I used to lucid dream pretty frequently. Now that I think about it, I haven't been since I started playing games again. Enter Dead Space 2, goodbye train nightmares. Fucking Blane.

I actually thin their on to something here. I have actually become less of a scardey-cat playing horror games as opposed to becoming more afraid, and it has helped me cope with some real life fears, as strange as it sounds.

It does make sense. Nightmares usually stem from either traumatic experiences or phobias/frights. If you desensitize yourself to violence, which is a massive fright, it's not going to scare you anymore.

studies show alot of things, if we accept that video games indeed stop nightmares, then we need to conclude that video games also cause rape.
i strongly believe that video games are beneficial, but we cant just accept what we want and disregard everything else because its not what we want to hear.
case in point: studies are bullshit.

This seems one hundred percent true. On multiple occasions I've felt games have stopped me from developing borderline PTSD. Whenever traumatic things happen, games always keep me grounded.

Dude, my last band broke up after I cut the lead guitarist's hand off, so I can totally relate to what you're saying here.

Also, I've been playing lots of Wolverine: Origins since then.

That's interesting, I game heavily but I also have strong lucid dreams every night, I even start hallucinating before i've even fallen asleep and still keep control. Though i'm not sure whether this is game related as none of my dream signs are, maybe it's because I've worked at establishing heavy control over my dreams. My brother on the other hand suffers from night terrors and since he started playing games more heavily they have more or less stopped happening, though he tells me now he always has the same recurring dream most nights, interesting stuff!

Normal, games empower us! They allow us to regain control, regain confidence when we're losing it. I'm glad I had a game to go blindly dish out a couple of virtual bullets into virtual antagonists when I needed it the most. I don't quite know how I would have coped with my thraumatic events without them.

I used to have nightmares with zombies coming to eat me after watching night of the living dead when I was young. They only went away after playing resident evil 4 on a 10 dollar gamecube. Now whenever I have that dream I grab a shotgun and take them out. True story!

I find it kinda weird that soldiers go out and play violent video games, I figured that people with actual violent life experiences would find those types of games unappealing.

If we ever get to that fantasy world where video games are damn near life-like imagine how cathartic it will be to create a likeness of someone you absolutely despise, walk up to them with your game character, and punch them right in the mouth... or do it yourself if we're talking wild palms vr type stuff.

Last night, I had a dream that I went to an Ice Cream shop to pick up some ice cream for a party. The total came to $20.34. $20 for a gallon and a half. If that's not a nightmare, I don't fucking know what is.

brb playing more violent video games
