Study sees possible link between racing games and automobile purchases photo

Motor Authority is reporting on an experiment performed at Carleton University in Canada. In an effort to discern the influence of interactivity on buying decisions, a group of subjects was given a racing game to play on an Xbox 360 while a second group was placed in a separate room, where a video feed of the game was displayed (simulating an extended advertisement for the car).

The researchers found that the group playing the game had a much stronger desire to purchase the vehicles that they had been driving in the game than the group who had merely watched it on a television. Skill also seemed to play little to no factor in this desire, as increases were largely the same regardless of how often the driver lost control or crashed.

Of course, we don't know which game was played, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't Yaris. In fact, I'd like to pose a suggestion to the research team that they perform their next experiment using the Toyota-produced advergame to see what the reaction is. My money is on it having a negative effect, as I know I sure as hell never want to see one of those cars ever again.

Wow that's really interesting.

Yaris truly is the suck of car games.

Well truth is while playing a simulacrum of a car may drive you to desire said car in real life. I believe the amount of money in your bank account has more influence in what car you buy.

Playing Yaris however usually makes people stop driving altogether and raised the amount of people that used public transportation by 50%, this of course is all in a study I just made up.

Maybe it was the other way around? They could have picked the car they already desired? I know when I play racing games I usually pick the car I like.

I hate my parents' Yaris.

However, having a 1976-ish Camaro would be awesome.

I believe this is true, however, a track-day at the nurburgring is even more enticing to want a certain car :-) most likely a Porche 911 GT3 RS ( getting horny just thinking of it :-))

Isn't this true for a lot of items featured in games released within the last few generations? Articles of clothing, weapon replicas, food, etc.. It might influence other things as well, say if someone decides to learn a particular marital art after being introduced to it in a game.

For instance, how many of you who played MGS3 wanted to find out how Calorie Mates tasted? Sure, dry food isn't nearly the same kind of investment as a high-performance car, but you get the idea.

Many say snakes taste a lot like chicken but MSG3 didn't in the least bit make me curious to try it.
On the subject of the article I can offer my own little anecdote. In Burnout 2 my favoured vehicle was the jap muscle though before this I was unaware of a personal preference or desire toward the Toyota Celica Supra (I think that's what the jap muscles real life counterpart would be). To this day I would still like a jap muscle, with insignia calling it that, however my preferred car types are 4X4s. CANYONEROOOOOOOOE.

I think they're right, at least so far as wanting a car you play with.

I've drooled over Audi cars ever since Gran Turismo 2. If I ever make mad money, I'm getting one.
