3,500 Australians in over 1,200 households have been surveyed in the Digital Australia Report 2012 as to their videogame and digital media habits. The results are nothing but positive -- a whopping 92% of Australian households now own a gaming device, and the average age of a person playing games has increased to 32 (it was 28 in 2007).
Conducted by Sydney's Bond University and the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA), the study also reveals more surprises:
- 57% play games almost every day
- 88% of parents play with their children
- 63% play on consoles, 62% on PCs, 43% on phones and tablets
- 43% buy games from retailers, 40% buy games online
Considering the long, long, long history of trouble that videogames have suffered in Australia, this study is very encouraging. Perhaps now we can move forward and forget about those questionable accents in Dead Island.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Looks like most people who have played games...do not stop playing games, hence obvious age increase for gamers. I wonder how old I'll be before I don't care to play anymore, or gaming as we know it takes a shit in general.
Aw, that's sweet. My parents were always too old to bother with videogames.
Maybe in a decade I'll be kicking my 3 year old sons ass at COD 17
My 6 year old and I play the PSN version of Plants vs. Zombies co-op all the time, if you want something your 3 year old might be able to play around with now. It's a lot of fun. Basically you can just teach him how to put butter on the heads of zombies and you do most of the work planting defenses. Works great and he'll have a blast. ;)
You mean right wing. Fixed.
I asked my friend who isn't as crazy about games as I am and he honestly thought it would be childish if I was playing games into my 30s .... I don't care, considering this report :P
$99.95 for Gears of War 3
$109.95 for Dead Island
$119.95 for Modern Warfare 3 (when it releases)
The Dead Island price is the standard price for new releases, the Gears price is what quite a few games have been launching at recently and the MW3 price is basically what CoD launches at all the time because they know they can get away with it.
I'm sure my intellect far exceeds yours.
But anyway,
that is skewed! it's probably the massive influx of mobile gaming on iPhones and such.
The only reason I could agree with that statement is the fact that Australians still seem to be willing to fork out the inflated game prices. Aside from that I don't see your point.
