Studio Ghibli/ Level 5's The Another World ported to PS3 photo

Aww, this is a little bit of weird news, but cool for fans of very pretty Japanese videogames. As some of you might know, famed Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli, the creators of such illuminous films as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away had been working on the animation for a Level 5's upcoming Ni no kuni: The Another World for the DS. While this in itself is exciting, what is more interesting is what Famitsu announced today.

Via Adriasang, Ni no Kuni: The Another World will be coming to the PS3 with Move support, and should better represent the insanely good animation that Studio Ghibli is known for. While the DS version of the game is apparently still coming this fall to Japan (and looks like a DS title when viewed in-game), the PS3 version does not have a release date, although images shown were impressive in replicating the artistic design of Studio Ghibli. Level 5 will be having a press conference later this week, so hopefully we can gain some better insight of this title, as well as the development status of the PS3 version. Maybe even a US release date!

This sounds like the most beautiful game ever.
Two questions I hope someone can answer:
How involved are Ghibli?
What Type of game is it?

From what i've gathered online:

1. The game was always promoted at the end of the japanese trailers as "for DS and another platform", we all just assumed the other platform was the Wii. Guess not!

2. The game has two different story versions, the DS and the PS3 one.

3. It's not a "port" of the DS game, it's being developed for the PS3 as well from the ground up.

Here is a scan of the PS3 version, came out in Famitsu today:

Looks interesting, have to see what the PS3 version looks like though. Developers are really loving that Move, huh. Can't wait to see what else is in line for it.

Thanks for mentioning the "not a port" aspect. :) A VERY big point.

I was so effing excited for the DS version that never in my wildest dreams would I have thought it would also be on PS3. This blew my mind and made my day. They have 2 definite sales from me already!!

Will definitely buy the PS3 version, but will likely get both.

Too bad it's probably too late to go 3DS on this.

As I'm sure others have mentioned, Ben, this is not a port but a standalone experience very different from it's DS counterpart. Anyone who can read Japanese can see that from the Famitsu scans (which you didn't post??).

As for the relevant conjecture, I think Move support is the title's dirty little secret and will surely sell me on it if it is in fact announced.

Though I obviously want to hear more about the gameplay itself, I'm extremely interested. Also, very intrigued by the whole "solving puzzles with the hardcover book that comes with the game" thing that IGN reported.

Oh yes! The game is actually kind of a Dragon Quest clone (so you can make an idea on the gameplay). It's a full-fledged RPG indeed :-D I seriously can't wait for more info on this game.

Wow, this is quite awesome. Not only do we get one Studio Ghibli game, we get TWO. That is, assuming that the reports about the games being different are true. Would make sense though. If the DS and PS3 version had the exact same story/gameplay, either the DS version would pale in comparison or the PS3 version would feel rather limited.

@Tuxy79: @lewness: It goes back to the first Xbox, when Level 5 was developing an MMORPG for Microsoft called True Fantasy Live Online to promote Xbox Live in Japan. I don't remember all the details but they had problems implementing voice chat in the game (something MMORPG games from that time didn't have) and Microsoft kept insisting on it since it was a major feature of Xbox Live. The game got delayed many times and eventually Microsoft cancelled it just as it was about to released, even though Level 5 have been showing it around in playable form during gaming shows and whatnot. Understandably Level 5 was really bummed out about it all and there were some rumors that the two companies didn't part well.

thank god its comming out on ps3 and not wii- i ditched my DS (got ripped of though- never sell to a store again!) and wii stylistally sucks! ps3 can give a ghibli game a hd rendering and makes the time taken to paint those backdrops worth it.
