Street Fighter X Tekken: Pandora mode not above being cut photo

I'm looking forward to Street Fighter X Tekken as much as the next fighting game fan. It's got a crazy roster with some straight out of left field characters, tag team action, and some ridiculous cross-up super moves. It's a dream collaboration of two of the most successful fighting game franchises ever created and on the top of my list for next year.

With another chance to bust some hadokens in the face of the Tekken roster and see the sultry -- still not sure if it's a man -- Poison in action last week, I was able to tinker around with the game's recently revealed Pandora mode.

"We're going to try to make Pandora more interesting or just cut it. I'm not above cutting it even though we just announced it."

Street Fighter X Tekken (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [Previewed], PC)
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Releases: March 6, 2012

At the moment Pandora mode is a last resort, desperation attempt for a player on the verge of death. When either partner is down to 25 percent health or less, tapping down twice followed by a simultaneous press of the two medium attacks will sacrifice that player and give the other partner about five seconds of enhanced strength to finish the job. The benefit to this move: its zero frames, damage is multiplied, and the super meter becomes unlimited.

Unfortunately at the moment, while it looks incredibly impressive with its stylized glowing edges, I found the mode mostly useless and even a little busted. From what I could tell, you don't take actual damage when Pandora mode is activated. Instead your life bar drains at a fixed rate until it's depleted. So even if you are in the middle of a Super that normally would have killed your enemy, if your life bar finishes before they're KO'd you lose.

Now while that all sounds like logical risk versus reward fighting tactics and makes perfect sense, what happens when both players initiate the mode? Well, from my experience whoever is the benefactor of firing off Pandora mode second is guaranteed the win. Granted, the opportunity to counter this move with your own will not always present itself but the fact that each character's life bar drains at the same rate and damage from attacks are mitigated opens up a potential flaw in the balance of the game.

It's something Capcom's own fighting game consultant Seth Killian agrees still needs work. "Pandora [mode] right now I would say is pretty weak-sauce. I would not activate it. We're still playing with it and trying to figure [it] out... This is not the final form."

Street Fighter X Tekken still has a good six months of development time ahead and the build I was playing wasn't the most up-to-date, as Rufus was not available. Outside of Pandora mode the rest of the game feels really solid. The Cross Art and Cross Assault tag attacks are viscious and make players really decide how to spend their Super meter. Every character also feels really balanced, with no one character dominating the game -- at least yet -- and it's nice to see old favorites like Rolento back in the mix.

Capcom also recently teased a gaggle of new, yet unannounced fighters so there is definitely more work to be done. Which speaks good for the sanctity of the game's overall balance and for Pandora mode.

"We're going to try to make Pandora more interesting or just cut it," Killian said. "I'm not above cutting it even though we just announced it."

Hopefully that's not the case for Pandora mode. It's an interesting concept that as Killian put to me "is a game changer," just unfortunately at the moment "not a game winner."

Pretty bold statement for a developer. Hopefully they'll do whatever is best for the game as a whole. Hell, Valve teases things for TF2 and will change them as necessary all the time.

Pandora mode really isn't the problem, now that Gem system...

I don't even fucking care god damn. Fuck this gem mode, fuck this pandora mode (though I don't mind them being in the game).

For the love of god capcom release some new character reveals. Seriously I want to know what characters are making it in over all this other bullshit.

Though if you just announce juri ASAP you can go back to bullshitting with modes

I really hope they drop Pandora all together if they can't find a way to change it from what it is currently.

Also, "The Cross Art and Cross Assault tag attacks are viscous"
I'm sure you meant vicious.

Pretty sure every fighter has been announced other than I think one Tekken character. And all the SF characters other than Poison, Hugo, and Rolento (weird, just noticed they're all FF enemies), are just copied pasted from SF IV. 28 characters with only 3 new SF ones feels empty when SF IV itself has 39 now... but I guess they have to hold something for DLC/later versions. Assuming anyone cares enough for that to happen. I'm guessing this is going to be their first big bust after MVC3 and SF IV generally doing so well.

The recent teases for characters beg to differ.
Also Ono was teasing Asuka just the other day. Who wasn't in the previous teases.

I hope they fix this Pandora mode, it's very interesting.

Pandora is fine.
Gems are shit.
Why aren't you reporting on the fact that Capcom is selling skills and abilities separate from the main game, and making it so you can't turn off the abilities?
Unless they change something, or this game falls as flat as the fighting community is saying it will, expect to pay for special moves in the next fighter released by capcom.

@Free Touch to be fair thats all speculation. We have no idea yet what Gems are in game and what are preorder bonuses or what will be dlc. They still havent even announced what the Gem dlc is gonna cost if anything at all yet.

Comeback mechanics never work, they should find some other means to get casual gamers to spend their money...

Pandora mode is nothing like X-Factor. I approve of it more than the gems, but alas I will wait till after launch to judge.

I'd say, that they should just cut the Pandora and Gem system and call it a day. Silly gimmicks need to leave ASAP.

This game pretty much plays and feels like I was hoping SF4 WOULD of played like when it first released, though adding a mode in like this makes it sound like a step in the opposite direction. Why is it so hard to just focus on the gameplay and characters, instead of adding in bullshit gimmicky comeback mechanics? After playing this at PAX, I gotta say I was fucking excited to play more, but news about all these new unnecessary mechanics have me worried for how the final product will end up.

Nothing for nothing, I'm going to be one of those people who'll say "of course they'll cut it, they'll need it to make the "Ultimate" Street Fighter X Tekken that'll come out 6 months later"

Why keep in a mode being previewed now when you can add it later and make $40.

Pandora, as conceived, didn't work. It was obviously flawed. People were saying it was flawed ever since it was introduced, because you just had to wait a few seconds for your opponent to die. But only now, after this much time, is Seth Killian admitting it doesn't work?

On the other hand, Seth Killian seems to be as much or more a company yes man than a fighting game player/designer, at least in public. In that regard, admitting Pandora doesn't work may be a pretty major event.

I think people should be more concerned about the eventual quality of Street Fighter x Tekken. Capcom started with a simple idea that would work, but has since been throwing additional systems at it almost at random, overloading it with special options. All the team stuff, pandora, gems, whatever else they announce... And gems... Supposedly vital to the very core of the game, with the game balanced around them, but Capcom was showing off the game for months without even hinting at them. And pre-order DLC gems now?

I like the idea of pandora. Maybe in addition to a depleting health bar you also take damage so the opposing player doesn't have to play defensively when it's activated. Or if you activate pandora you your health bar doesn't deplete, and it becomes a one-hit kills situation.

He misspoke. What he meant to say is "Pandora mode is not being cut."

Wow. You don't take damage in Pandora? That's something everyone can agree is broken. P1 goes into Pandora, P2 waits a second and then activates it and wins automatically. Bull.

I thought Seth was just a community liason and manager though, not having any actual weight in the administrative areas of development?

Otherwise, Pandora is indeed pretty weak-sauce as it is. It doesn't even look like people will like to use it online matchmaking, let alone in a tournament setting.

I was hoping this would turn out to be a real game. But they keep announcing all these weird Marvel-esque mechanics. Theres like five different gimmicks in this game. And none of them are particularly good.

Cut it. From most competitive players I've talked to, they're either fine with it being totally useless (as all aribitrary comeback mechanics should be) or taken out altogether. We don't want another level 3 X-Factor situation where it dominates the metagame.
