What is it about pixels that makes things awesome? Maybe it's just the retro sensibilities of the hardcore gamer, but despite all the updated graphics and super bloom poly dithering shading thingies we still get all excited when something has only eight squares to it and looks like a pile of vomit. Case in point: taking Street Fighter II back in time to the days of the Atari.
In this parellel universe that Dylan Hayes has created SFII came out in the early 80's, when primary colors and scratchy noises were enough to keep us happy. The thing is, if it ran smoothly and had good enough collision detection the game could play exactly the same as its modern counterparts. What it could never do is hope to express the wonders that are Chun-Li's thighs.

I sure hope this person didn't spend more than 3 minutes of their life doing this. What's the point? In a fighting game, the visuals are important. They are the reward you get for mastering ridiculous button combos.
This would be boring as shit, even back in the 80s.
i like this kind of stuff... but i don't think the atari could scroll.. hell, nes games couldn't scroll until the 2nd or 3rd generation of cartridge chips.
Jesus, this reminded me of a dream I had when I was 10. I was all over SFII but could only play it in arcades as all I had was an old PC. Then I heard a PC version of SFII was coming out, but with the stuff I used to play on it back then I had no idea PC graphics could be anywhere as good as SFII's. So I imagined it would be something like this video...in a dream. Yeah, videogames messed me up pretty early along the way.
This looks more like its a hit-box debug mode. Notice how most of the background is gone, but the fish are still there. And the health bars and everything are still 16-bit looking. If someone actually attempted to make it look atari-like, leaving the health bars as they were is just lazy.
Whatever to all the haters. This is the ultimate piece of evidence of the graphics vs. gameplay argument. People call it "boring as shit, even back in the 80s" even though it retains the same awesome gameplay.
This is a cool experiment, and makes for a really awesome commentary on all the hypocrites that are like "oh I don't care about graphics! All about the gameplay, baby!" Obviously they were all just blowing smoke out of their asses. Graphics matter. This proves it. Though I still think it looks cool in a very, very retro sort of way.
It's broken emulation. I played through Alpha 2 or 3 (it was hard to tell) like this at my friends house a month ago. The characters blended in with the background more though...
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
