Street Fighter Alpha 3 rated by ESRB, listed for PS3 photo

Good old Capcom, never short of a re-release for we notalgia-driven nerds to lap up like faithful dogs. Street Fighter Alpha 3 looks like it'll be the latest from Capcom's expansive back catalog to be dusted down and thrown to the wolves, with the ESRB re-rating the title for a PlayStation 3 release.

When Capcom decided to port Alpha 2 to the PSN, it confused a number of people, and they questioned why the superior Alpha 3 was not released instead. Here's what community member Stafax had to say on the matter:

WTF why Alpha 2? That's so completely random. Why wont they take the version of Alpha 3 that's on the PSP and shovel it over to the PSN?

Silly Stafax. Capcom will shovel the PSP game over to PSN, but why just do that when it could re-release two games instead of one? Really, we should have seen this coming the moment Alpha 2 was announced. It's quite funny that this news comes on the day I talked about how excited people get for remakes and how Capcom, among others, exploit such excitement.

Show of hands: Who will buy this?

[Thanks, Brigham]

Why the hell is this bullshit (and Alpha 2) coming as a "PS1 classic", and not a simple port with an "online" addition. You can just download all these old games with the same functionality. Oh wait, they have online play as downloads.

I'm a Capcom whore, but this is seriously fucked up. You announce Alpha 2, and then two weeks later, Alpha 3? Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is just around the corner!

On the one hand, I found Alpha 3 to be the most outright fun Street Fighter game and I'd be happy to play it agian after my PSX has long since bricked.
On the other hand, fucking hell Capcom.

I patiently waited with fingers crossed the moment Alpha 1 was released. I will forever regard Alpha 3 as one of the best Street Fighters ever (now second to only 4).

Are we getting Alpha 3 PS or PSP? And what's the difference? I only played the PS version.

Alpha 2 and 3 are incredibly different games, both have their pluses and minuses. I see no reason to be pissed off about having both.
Not going to buy it though, since I have Alpha Anthology.

@Lx
The PS version had SO many extra things over the other iterations. It had tons of extra characters (plus Fei Long!!), extra modes (including an RPG type mode, where you gain and equip abilities), and extra endings. Odds are they won't give us that amazing version.

I also regard 3 as the best, but I was completely pwned by community member FistfulOAwesome, which explained step by step why Alpha 2 was the better game. It was actually a pretty funny comment thread.

Anything wrong with me or is that normal?

The whole different types for each fighter like Aism and Bism and whatnot was really confusing

@ Jawmuncher - YOU ARE A FREAK OF NATURE! (lol no everyone is entitled to their own opinions)

I hope it is the PSone version of the game and not the psp though, PS1 had that awesome world tour mode that mixed RPG elements into the mix. Wait... OMG why the hell haven't more companies (or just capcom for that matter) done this in fighting games BRILLIANT!

@Magnalon: Sorry about that. I'm pretty passionate about SF and I just wanted to express my opinion with another fan. I could do the same thing with SFIV (which I think is severely overrated (it takes a lot out of me to not write it as SFII.5) but this not the place to do so.

For anyone interested in the pawnage (again, sorry Magnalon): http://www.destructoid.com/street-fighter-alpha-2-hits-psn-this-thursday-134162.phtml

As for this release: Gee I hope no one buys this. Not because I dislike Alpha 3, but because it would hopefully teach Cacpom a lesson that baiting fans is not a good idea. A little respect, please (Giant Japanese Company that is totally reading this post and taking it to heart).

By all means, don't be sorry! I tend to express my opinions more than most, but I love a good back-and-forth more than anything. I'm glad you were able to actually find the pwnage, as well! I also agree with SF4 being overrated. It's like the casual, sparkling re-introduction of SF2, and tons of new fans ate it up.

I hate it when people are offered the chance to buy old classics they may have never gotten the chance to pick up or they lost or broke and are going on eBay for sometimes triple the original price too Jim!

I can usually safely ignore your vitriol on most occasions, Jim. Hell, I think I even usually agree with it, or can sympathize with the points you're making. But this recent stance on old games made downloadable is ridiculous.

You advocate consumers voting with their wallets, yet you deride companies for re-releasing old games that sell well. Are the companies not just giving the consumer what they want?

It seems to me that you just like to bitch at whatever you can whenever you can ... and I've realized that I've just pointed out something regular Destructoid readers have known for years. Then again, I just made you some money by commenting on your story, so maybe you're not as big of a silly twat as you sometimes make yourself out to be.

And if I come across as too butthurt, I apologize. I still want snuggles at PAX.

though...it'd be great if Capcom stopped rererererererereleasing SF games. If you don't have one of the millions of SFII/Alpha games by now, you seriously shouldn't be playing fighters.

I'm with you on that one. Capcom vs SNK 2 is bay far my favorite Capcom fighting game. I would love that to be rereleased. I honestly don't even care about Marvel vs Cacpom 2. That's a fun game to play with friends, but do I really want to play that game online? Not me. Capcom vs SNK 2 is balanced a lot better, and it more skill based.

Exactly! Newcomers of MvsCapcom 2 will get bored of online Sentinel/Mag/Storm fests, REAL fast, but the SNK2 community would flourish all over again due to the overall balance the game had. It had tiers, sure, but they were actually manageable: and by that, I mean every top tier didn't have an infinite combo like MvsCapcom2.

THANKS RAB: now I can dream about this re-release, which probably won't come for at least a year or so. Or maybe next week based on Capcom's recent habits (LOL AMIRITE?).

I should point out that I have no actual problem with these games being released. As I said in my feature today, I am guilty as anyone of buying this shit when it comes out. However, surely you can agree with me that the rate at which Capcom pulls this shit is comical.

I don't really have vitriol for what Capcom's done. I just find it funny, and I'm merely poking lighthearted fun at this scenario. I don't hate Alpha 3's presence on PSN.

@ Sterling: You must be kidding me.

You're complaining that Capcom is one of the few companies supporting the PS1 classics section of the PSN Store? Because they're provide people with the opportunity to purchase their game, which people might not have ever played before, you're calling them laughable? They'll eventually get to Rival Schools, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne and Strider 2 if they find that they've got a hungry audience on PSN, so I don't find any issue with the rate at which they are releasing games.

Heaven forbid that they put some work into it to make it the arcade version with all the combined extras of the PSP and Dreamcast versions (DC has same extras as the PS1 but closer to the arcade). If they did that, I'd be happy to buy it rather than feeling ambivolent and not buying it like with all the other ports of Playstation games that are inferior and not what they could be.
coffeesash's Avatar
coffeesash at 06/14/2009 06:06
I mean if it's just a 'rom' of the Playstation version that lazily runs using the PS1 backwards compatability then you're paying for the worst version of the game in terms of graphics and speed and they've put no effort in whatsoever. #Chaching# :(

Yeah, Capcom sucks. Hard to imagine that they release a PS1 game onto the PS classics store, where PS1 games are made available to purchase. Instead they should have added online multiplayer, new graphics, new game modes, and it should be free. I feel deeply offended that they would make such an item available for purchase since other versions of this game are available and anyone who doesn't have one of these 'superior' versions simply doesn't deserve to have a chance to play it, even with the added feature of playing the game on a PS3 or PSP, or both. Capcom sucks.
