Stranger's Wrath HD out on PSN right now, only $15 photo

Back in January of '05, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath slipped right past me, along with a multitude of other games I should have played, simply because it came out right after Halo 2. To this day, I still haven't played Stranger's Wrath. Whenever someone talks about just how fantastic the game is, I feel extremely guilty inside.

I was so glad to hear that an HD remaster was in the works sometime back in 2010. Ever since then, I've eagerly been looking forward to its release. Word about the port was quiet for awhile, but it is now finally here on PSN with enhanced visuals, upgraded textures, re-mastered audio, trophies, bonus material and the promise of Move and 3D support coming later via a patch. Our review for Stranger's Wrath HD is coming very soon, but really the $15 price tag is all you need to convince you to pick this one up.

"Oddworld Inhabitants released the HD version of the game for $15. It has upgraded visuals and runs at 60 frames-per-second. A PC version will follow in the months to come, and a Vita port is planned sometime down the line as well."

I am really not interested in this game, but I hope it paves the road for Oddworld 3. I'm sure that's what pretty much everybody wants is a new Oddworld game in the style of the first two.

I felt really burned by their less than abysmal PC port; and the fact that according to the steam forums their HD patch on PC is merely a 'maybe' (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1670429 look for Stewart Gilray's post).

I'm sure it's a good game, but the company has pissed me off too much to try the PS3 version.

I bought this on steam the other day for £1.99. that's $3.

why do people buy games on ps3 again?

@ Neil Marcus Rowlands,

The original version perhaps, but this version has yet to be released on PC. Allegedly it soon will - but I suspect at a similar pricing level.

It's also worth mentioning that the original PC port was abysmal.

I was extremely depressed when this game was cancled on the PS2. Bought it yesterday and I FINALLY can play it. I like it a lot...but Stranger's voice is fucking awful. And they make you listen to it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. YOU JUMP.

Also worth mentioning is Klona came out yesterday too. I'm kind of in video game heaven right now.

the resolution of the game is quite good IMO, isn't that the point of HD? I can set this to a widescreen format at hi resolution. what do they do for the HD, increased textures and poly counts?
I was playing it this evening and I didn't see anything badly wrong with it.
sure, I think the coding could be a bit better to improve the framerate, but it's not as bad as the trash ubisoft have been putting out.

I hear possibilities of people w/ the steam version getting the update free. Hear anything about this, is that a plausible story?

If so, that was a 4ish bucks well spent. (Oddbox)

I played this game and enjoyed it but got stuck on a really difficult fight partway through. I think I'll pick this up to finish what I started.

It's only $5 on GoG now. Which I can't link to because apparently it makes my post look like spam?!

When they say "HD" do they just mean "running in higher resolution and framerate and widescreen" or are they actually improving the art assets? I saw screenshots of the so-called "HD" version of Beyond Good and Evil, and it's basically the same as the PC version but with the addition of widescreen support. The textures etc. were all the same.

strangers wrath is a really great game. but it has some insane difficulty spikes that can cause you to throw your controller. some areas are either too easy, or almost impossible. there isnt a build up to this, it doesnt flow with challenge like it should. it wasn't addressed in the HD remake and other reviews pointed it out as well. but its really inventive and i recommend it, but be prepared to get stuck. some areas are nerve wracking. not in a dark souls rewarding kind of way, but a frustrating unbalanced sense. is say 8/10

@ Neil,

Normally HD rereleases are just as you say - simple resolution bumps. Therefore, ordinarily I'd agree with you that picking up the normal PC version would be no different. But in this case I believe, though someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that they've actually bumped up the polys on the models and also included higher quality textures. Again, as to whether that's worth the extra money? Well that's up to the individual but having both options is nice.

As for the original PC port, it was buggy and ran like arse when it came out. At least for it's visual quality anyway. Haven't loaded it up in years, though. Likely to be far more bearable now.

This was one of those games that I wanted to play when it came out years ago, but I never got around to it.

So putting aside ALL nostalgia...is it worth playing NOW?

@ Nerdy Suit

I was in the same boat. When I got it I wasn't disappointed. Looks and plays fine for me.

Only thing is that when I load the menus they lag. (Though the rest of the game is fine.) That is probably my computer though, unless someone else has the same issue.

I'm holding out (admittedly very little) hope for an XBLA release.
I prefer keeping all my purchases on one system, but if a few months pass and it goes on sale on PS3 and still no news on XBLA, I might grab it.

@LsTr Of SmG:
GoG usually does compatibility and bug fixes, so their version may run better than the original release, or the version on Steam. Not having DRM might help, too, as some DRM screws up the game.

Just Add Water royally fucked up the PC release and it's still generally shit for ATI users.

I'm not saying 'don't buy the PSN version' but all of these claims of rock-solid framerates are questionable and some of their HD 'upgrades' are downright dumb. (effects changed or removed, no re-balancing, shoddy audio, and so on and so forth)

Just Add Water, as a studio, needs to get their shit together and I don't trust them as far as I can throw them to fix/add things in future patches. (because they've bullshitted their way along on PC)

Ultimately, Lorne Lanning and Oddworld Inhabitants are to blame here for being poor stewards of their IPs.

the game holds up extremely well. it seriously plays like a dream. it was originally xbox exclusive, so it was already beautiful and way ahead of cube/ps2. everything in the game was retouched and redone. its now 60fps and even has DTS 7.1 this and the ico/shadow collection are the best and how HD remasters should be done. yes the pc version coming up is going to be even better, they have a newer engine running it. theres already a patch avail. the game is hysterical and has loads of charm. definite must buy but play it on easy. it gets real hard.

I couldnt tell if the "only $15" bit was a joke until I read the article because the idea of enthusiasm over the price is hilarious. I could get 20 cans of baked beans for that, and a Pepsi.

This was an absolutely beautiful game on the Xbox, thinking back I'd probably tie it with Fable for good looks but I could just be being nostalgic. Didn't need a HD Remake, it needed a vastly more expansive world and side quests(Ha, like Fable did).

The points where it became difficult were the points where you were meant to change your style of play, once you figured out how to get through to the next screen it eased up again. Though, I did through a few controller over this game.

I've always been sore that this story was never given a sequel. Never liked the other oddworld games but I absolutely loved this. Replayed the shit out of it. A beautiful, beautiful game.

Having a bit of a sad thinking about the fact that I already own this on the original Xbox, but it never got backwards compatibility.

Assume there's a sony exclusivity deal?

^ I thought it was because they couldn't get the game size small enough to get it on XBLA.
I think they said they would try to get it smaller. I don't know the file size - is it really a big file? Guess I'll Google it

@D-Nez:
The PC version is listed as 1.5GB on GoG. So if the remake is over 2GB (the size limit) then perhaps they have revamped the graphics.

Hopefully they do port the remake to PC, sounds like the current version is buggy according to everyone :/
