Stop the milking: Call of Duty 5 to be developed by Treyarch, set in WWII? photo

While nothing has been confirmed yet, there's a chance that the next Call of Duty title will be heading back to World War II, because apparently gamers can't get enough of that war in particular.

As discovered by GAMER, the job listings on Treyarch's Web site reveal that the developer is looking for a level builder. What's interesting is one of the qualifications for the opening:

"Working experience with First-Person Shooter or Third-Person Shooter genres (console or PC). And if you’re a fan of World War 2 shooters, then even better!"

Unless Treyarch decides to alter the events of WWII by creating a game featuring bear cavalry and an undead legion of Nazi warriors, you can count me out. I've grown weary of historically accurate war games that bring nothing new to the table in terms of actual gameplay conventions.

I know many of you weren't happy with Treyarch's previous involvement in the Call of Duty franchise (CoD3 and Big Red One), so unless some revolutionary changes are made internally, it's safe to assume that the next Call of Duty game will be just another way for Activision to make easy money off of the series' success so far.

This would make sense from a business standpoint. They spent a bunch of money making this one great and it's a big hit. Now they just make another on the cheap and capitlize off of revived interest in the brand. Makes a lot of sense.

I hate it when things make sense.

I say they should just jump back to the War of 1812, except I don't think the U.S. politicians will be too keen to see the digital reenactment of the Burning of Washington. Probably wouldn't be enthused about that.

That picture is Stephen Colbert's new nightmare.

Man, I would LOVE a totally historically inacurate WWII FPS. Nazi's riding t-rexes, cowboys, Italian Zombies, Daft Punk singlehandedly ending the Nazi presence in France with the aid of timetravel and a talking dog...

at least it would be different.

That may be one of the greatest ideas for a videogame ever. It didn't get good until I imagined electronic music by Frenchmen ending the Nazi Presence in France, except the French are about as successful in wars as sega and game consoles.

Just vote with your wallets, people. Don't buy Treyarch's filth. As far as I'm concerned, Treyarch's CoD games are more like half sequels while Infinity Ward makes the true sequels. I would love to see IW do a future warfare CoD...just let their imaginations run wild.

They should let IW make more Modern Warfare games, Future warfare like BF2142 can go suck some balls.

Also, about the French being shit at war. They were a dominant force back in the 1000's, and the Mega Drive (No, it's not called Genesis) was one of the greatest consoles ever. A better analogy would have been Modern France is to war, The Wii is for Masculinity.

Tell me that this is because Activision is bowing to pressure from the government to not do another too-realistic take on the current conflicts in the Middle East. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that was the case. Plus, they probably don’t want to go into the future and have to get creative with inventing weapons (and in fact, that might get tacky) — so they’ll just stick with what they know. I guess they spent too much money on the ActiBlizzard merger to be able to re-hire Infinity Ward for CoD 5.

Hey, I reported this news 7 months ago on the forums. Nelson Rodriquez of Achievement Junkie (at the time, now with Msoft) sat next to some activision guy on a plane that had a binder full of COD 5 info and since he wasn't under NDA and it was a complete coincidence he sat buy the guy he could talk about it. You can hear him talk about it on the 5/24/07 Achievement Junkie Podcast.

*Other news that people think is new but isn't*
Dan Akroyd admitted to reprising his role for an upcoming Ghostbusters game back in April of this year. That months Game Informer (the April 2007 with the Uncharted: Drakes fortune cover) reported it in the Good, Bad, and Ugly section.

Why do they keep switching the developers? It's clear that CoD 1, 2, and 4 were excellent, while the others were just passable. This makes no sense.

@ Dexter: What he said. I said the same thing earlier. It's to capitilize on the current success and revived popularity of the franchise, in the cheapest way possible. I wonder how the guys who work at Treyarch feel these days. They never do anything different or original. Just ports and shit like this. Must suck working there.

The Civil War is tough. The weaponry was so slow, it just wouldn't lend itself too well to the FPS genre. It has been tried before, and it sucked. Some 360 game. WW1 I dunno, maybe. How bout they just make up a fucking new war. A war between China and America. Big ass battles and shit, tons of soldiers, crazy Chinese soldiers acting crazy. Would be fun.

It is a shame that Activision didn't see the success of CoD4 and keep the franchise developed by IW and set in a modern day setting.

Unless there is something revolutionary like the bear cavalary I will be avoiding this

They could do Vietnam or Korea.

The real reason behind all of the WWII is because it's the last war that America "won."

I'd really like to see them try again to make a war like the Civil War more game friendly.

So basically, the next COD will suck on the PS3. ;)

Actually, I feel that COD4 shouldn't have been called COD4. It should have been the beginning of its own franchise. If their intent is to split the "modern day wars" into their own franchise, I don't have that big of a problem with this.

I highly doubt Infinity Ward would farm out COD5. It just doesn't make sense. They're great at it, and they'll make a fuckton of money if they make another great one. Also, why would they go back in time gamewise? It just doesn't make sense. I hope they go on to make 5 a future warfare game, like Battlefield 2142.
Evo's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/08/2007 08:34

Eschatos - IW aren't making CoD5, it is Treyarch who are making it, and as seen with their earlier CoD efforts it won't be 'great' unless they pull something out of the bag.

And with the ad saying "And if you’re a fan of World War 2 shooters, then even better!" then you can be 90% sure it will be set in WW2 again

2. If it is set in WWII, I hope everyone boycotts it

If I worked for Infinty Ward I would be out on the warpath. How would you like to be one of the few franchises that hasn't shit on WWII, just to have the asshats over @ Activision shit on you. Ifinity ward did not want to base COD 2 on WWII. Well rest assured that Infinty ward will be a break off company before long.

Throughout history, real history, we've seen many wars. England vs France? Spain vs Jews? Mexicans vs Texans? Those are good places to start.

Heck, I just want more spaghetti western shooters like Call of Juarez.

They've already made several Vietnam FPS games, as well as a Civil War one. They don't sell too great, and like bhive01 suggested pretty much everyone can feel good backing the allies in a WWII title. Korea and Vietnam don't lend themselves to as clear a "good triumphing over evil" situation. Also, a WW1 FPS game would be boring as hell. Press G to get your gas mask on in time. Try not to develop trench rot. Whee!!!

this actually wouldn't surprise me since they'll probably be rushing CoD5 out the door to make sure it comes out next year. Wait. Who owns the CoD name? If EA or IW don't then I guess IW being bought by EA would keep them from making it.

Either way, I think CoD5 should be set in the future and somehow involve robot dinosaurs.

I will seriously never play this, if this happens. I will, in fact, actively boycott the title. We do not need anymore WW2 COD titles. NO MORE. They found what I believe to be their niche with COD4, and they should continue to exploit that. They're idiots if they do otherwise.
