Stop putting sh*t on the Wii, suggests Codemasters photo

Codemasters, currently working on a brand new Overlord title for the Wii, has criticized what it deems "lazy" ports on Nintendo's system. The critique comes courtesy of Codies' Dean Scott, who argued that the best Wii games must be built with the console in mind, and developers shouldn't just "retrofit a load of sh*t."

"At this moment in time, because the installed userbase on Wii is so high, it’s the Wii gold rush. So publishers are like ‘sh*t, what can we get out on Wii really quickly?’ What that means is people end up porting games from other platforms, and they don’t fit the console because [the Wii remote] has to be the absolute starting point. The controller is point one. You can’t retrofit a load of sh*t and expect it to work with this controller."

I always found it bitterly ironic that the Wii was made to bring something new and inventive to the industry, yet has become the home of the uncreative and the lazy. It speaks volumes about certain publishers in this industry that they've been able to pervert the Wii in that manner. Scott is certain that Overlord: Dark Legend will eschew the idle ways of its peers, however:

"When you think of the best Wii games – Wii Sports and all that – they’re absolutely built to do what the controller does. [ Codemasters was ] conscious that we had to build something that played to the strengths of that platform. It’s even more important on Wii (…) so we wanted to do as much of Overlord as we could and enhance it using [the Wii Remote]."

All I know is, I love Overlord. That's my critical assessment of the situation right there.

It really is unfortunate, and it couldn't be better put than "the home of the uncreative and lazy," tack on unimaginative. You almost wish game publishing could learn to be much more selective. Like each company needs a set of editors to say "should we really sell this?"

I just picked up Overlord dirt cheap for the 360, that said what makes Codemasters game any different from the other companies trying to cash in on the Wii's installed base with a derivative port of a game not intended for the system originally?

It's a combination of publishers being money whores and thinking the Wii audience are idiots. I don't think Nintendo cares anyways since most of their money comes from hardware sales.

I get what he's saying, and I agree with him 100%. However this is coming from the same people that have given the Wii games like Heatseeker, and Emergency Mayhem so it seems a bit hypocritical. Sure they're new philosophy about putting more core games on the system is commendable, but its about time isn't it?

Because they were just as guilty as any other 3rd party developer on the Wii for putting out shovelware shit. Having said that Overlord for the Wii does look really good, and yes the Wii could use more good looking 3rd party games just like it!

@Yojimbo

They're making a new title specifically for it, and not a port.

I could be wrong though as I know nothing about this game.

Bwark speaks the truth.

I'm in complete agreement with Codemasters. If more companies thought in that same way, the Wii would be a much better gaming console.

Overlord? Overrated more like... (seewhutididthar??)

nah, I loved Overlord on 360 - It was like Fable meets Pikmin ;)

I can't see what the waggle is going to bring to it - the pad control scheme was good imo, but I agree with what Codemasters is saying.

I too agree with what he's saying, but its not rocket science. I'm not in the industry and even I knew this.

Put your money and talent where your mouth is, then we can all praise you like we should.

The Wii itself is supposed to be imaginative. Developers figure "creativity by extension" or something. Obviously it's total bollocks but it tricks the casual market which the Wii reels in without any effort at all. It's a retailers dream really.

Go Codemasters! I'm still not buying Emergency Mayhem, though.

As long as it'll keep selling, publishers will be more than happy to keep shovelling the shit.

I'm starting to notice that developers are finally starting to get the Wii... It only took them 2 years.

Shit sells like gangbusters, what's the point of making an effort on something new and original if nobody cares.

"Nintendo Seal of Quality, where are you"

The same place where Sony's, and Microsoft's "Seal of Quality" is. It simply doesn't exist on any system so don't act like there's no shovelware shit on the 360/PS3 because there is. People just seem to ignore it more on those system's.

If they were selling as well as the Wii is right now then there would be a whole hell of a lot more shovelware shit on those system's. I guess that's the price you pay for #1 just look at the PS2 it had the same problem last gen. Didn't it?
