No, Sony, you get that shit right, don't worry about being the first one out of the gate.
You've shown with the PS3 that you're the tortoise, while MS is the Hare. Slow, steady, better hardware and less but higher quality software wins the race.
Sure Natal will apeal to the little kiddies, kicking balls with your feet and catching butterflies with your hands, it might even grab a couple of sales of casual kids who have outgrown their Wii's. But the "Arc" is certainly looking like a tool for enhancing the current PS3 users (read: gamers) experience, and that I'm looking forward to.
We're yet to see a proper hardcore gamer's MoCo system and i have high hopes that that is what Sony are working on.
Crosses fingers, raises flame sheild, reminds the easily offended Weebols that I didn't say all xbox owners are kids!!!!
At least Natal is trying to be different. Sony's wand is a fucking cop-out.
And they'll both be shit.
Motion control is the Bon Jovi of Video gaming.
"raises flame sheild"
Wouldn't that deflect your own flaming back onto yourself?
Believing that one thinly substantiated motion capture system is better than another thinly substantiated motion capture system, purely because it is on the system you support, is somewhat delusional.
Incidentally, if you seriously don't mind that Sony are delaying their most esteemed products, namely the wand and Gran Turismo 5, into the latter half of 2010, then you are closing your eyes while Sony, who had developed a good momentum with encouraging hardware sales, drive the advantage they had built up into the ground.
Sitting on the success of the PS2 while letting Nintendo and Microsoft beat them to the punch was the biggest mistake Sony made this generation, and is partially why in terms of sales Wii is clearly dominant and Sony is fighting for second place in console share. It's not something to be proud of that they've not learned from this mistake.
As a PS3 and 360 owner, I was looking forward to seeing what the wand could do and was particularly looking forward to to titles such as RE5 Gold and No More Heroes, and the fact that it was out a good 6 months before Natal made the PS wand an obvious first choice purchase.
Now I see no reason not to wait and see which provides the best experience out of the PS3 wand and Natal.
I don't disagree with you that it is better to release a working product late than a broken product on time, but that doesn't mean that people who were looking forward to the PS wand shouldn't be understandably frustrated that the deadline Sony set itself wasn't met.
Nice, love it.
But even still, with the option of the two motion control systems, one which is at best a gimmick to add head-turn-looking and facial recognition to your normal controller gaming, the other is bringing the successful nature of the Wii to actual proper games. I know which one I'm looking forward to. Sure, neither is world changing, but as far as MoCo goes, I'm personally not interested in kicking balls and catching butterflies with Natal.
It pisses me off when people talk about how Nintendo is outselling Sony. Sony is selling to gamers (a smaller market) Nintendo is selling to non-gamers, we all know that the Wii is more toy than games console, it's a bridge between the two that doesn't serve actual gamers what they need but allows non-gamers a taste of our hobby.
In terms of REAL gaming, Sony is fighting for the top spot.
I just enjoy sitting back and watching my friends list grow, often adding those who a year ago would argue with me about how great their 360 is.
"Sony is selling to gamers (a smaller market) Nintendo is selling to non-gamers"
That wouldn't explain the BluRay player, SingStar, EyePet, Buzz!, Home, Fl0w, Flower, Zuma, or the dozens of other casual or family titles on the PS3.
That is, unless you are wrong in your statement and you are selling your beloved system short of its potential to appeal to both gamers and non-gamers alike, which isn't typical of you.
People still call the wii "not a game console"?
Too bad it's the only one that actually plays games and games only.
PS3 and 360 have DVDs, Music, TVshows, and c'mon, facebook and twitter?(360 only)
K my little nintendo fanboy's gone. DAmmit I wish I had a ps3 and a working 360 right now. I'm so bored. :(
And it's this fight that makes both the PS3 and the 360 such great systems. I wish you would acknowledge that. How gash do you think either machine would be without having to constantly raise its game? And how expensive would the PS3 still be if it hadn't of been consistently shown up for years and years by its technically inferior competitor. Also the fact that the PS3 has suddenly become a viable option for more people, doese not mean that the 360 has become unviable. There's a creeping sense in your posts that since Sony have managed to outsell the 360 by 50k for once that it's game over for the 360. The show's just getting going, man.. It's all good for us.
I personally love how my top of the range gaming console is all i need to have plugged into my TV, it does my gaming, it does my TV (and recording) it does HD films, it's got all my music on there, it's got a web browser, it's got Vidzone, I can plug any USB stick into it and play AVI's, can plug my camera into it and show my photo's on the big screen, can plug my phone into it, it's removed the need to own a freeveiw box, a DVD/Blu-ray player, a stereo, a Sky music channel subscription, etc etc.
All of that ON TOP of playing the very best games available. i mean if all it did was the games it would still be worth every penny of the asking price, but it does what you would expect, and does it ever so well, plus almost anything else you could need in your living room.... And now looks to have a pretty cool motion control system coming too!
However, building a "console" around a gimmicky control system, then failing to support it with anything more than casual shovelware, in my books makes it less of a console. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Wii, for the first few months, but it became less and less of a gaming console, and more and more of something to keep the kids happy. Gaming has moved on a lot since it's days of being something to sit kids in front of, and I personally think the Wii has dragged it back to that a little, which is why in my mind Games consoles and the Wii are completely different things.
@Chaos - Dude i know they're both great systems, there I acknowledged it, compared to last generation. However the PS3 is top dog compared to the 360 in my book. The 360 isn't any less viable, it's simply not as good. The 360's hayday was when it was the only HD (albeit non HDMI friendly) console available, back when my buddy showed me his 360 plugged into his HD TV with those weird AVI combination cables and had to tell me it was HD because it looked like shit. You know before most of us knew what HD looked like.
I mean that in it's self says a lot about MS's box-o-fail, that it was top dog when it was the only option and shortly while it's competition was beyond most peoples budget, but as the competition has become more affordable it's started slipping.
I know the fight isn't over, but it's coming to it's end, i mean it's only a few years until the next generation of consoles, and in every aspect apart from (rushed release and shoddy cheap manufacture skewed) revenue, the PS3 is on top as we enter the final lap.
Enjoy what you enjoy, argue your side, but I'm enjoying all the awesome games and the sheer quality of Sony's products, when Sony's quality starts to slip, so will my confidence in them.
I certainly wasn't saying it was a downside - I was saying that Sony is as fond of money as Nintendo, and is far less repulsed by non-gamers than you are.
I won't deny that from a "hardcore" gamer's perspective (though I'm loathed to use the term) the PS3 and XBox360 fit the demographic better than the Wii, with more titles in the range of interest for such folk. However, from Microsoft and Sony's perspective, there is envy toward Nintendo's success in the family market, and the forthcoming PS3 wand and Natal are clear attempts to make in-roads into Nintendo's dominance of the casual market.
If you step out of the egoism, you could clearly see that.
if the facial recognition works on the natal I will be a massive leap forward in home tech. Just because it not made by your producer of choice for your console of choice doesn't mean it isn't awesome or will be a total box of fail.
Your posts lack any kind of balanced perspective so you win my (newly invented) Bakewells Patent Patented Fanboy Fanfare of the Day.
Do-do-do-do-do-doo-do-do-DOOOOOO!
Enjoy
I'm betting my money that sony will make an FPS that uses only this device, maybe resistance 3, or a resistance spin-off.
Anyways bring back Gem! I swear to God Sony...
I think moving it back is stupid, because the biggest advantage it had over Natal was its release date. Even i Natal sucks, it has caught the public eye MUCH more then the PS3 Arc (or whatever they end up calling it), which is really bad for Sony. People are looking at the arc and saying "oh, we've see that, it's called the Wii" while Natal is new and exciting.
Honestly, motion control is stupid and I probably won't be getting either, but if you asked me right now which I'd be more willing to try out at Gamestop, I'm pretty sure I'd say Natal. Even if it doesn't work, because it is different and new I'm more willing to at least TRY it, and for lots of people that little bump is enough for them to throw down $50 or whatever it is going to cost to own it.
And then, bring on the exercise games. :/
I would say that the PS3 is more stable, but I wouldn't necessarily say it is any more powerful than the 360. Uncharted 2 definitely looked amazing, but MW 2 is right there and ran flawlessly. There's a very good article on Gamasutra where they interviewed the chip designer at IBM who was in charge of both the Cell and Xenon. When asked which was more powerful (page 3), he claimed that they were pretty much equal; and from what I've seen, I tend to agree. Anyway it's an entertaining read if you're interested. Cheers.

I use PSN daily and it's pretty much flawless.
And online co-op uncharted 2 takes the piss out of Gears. Hands down, no questions asked. Looks fantastic and plays fantastic. Gears is a bad example of online gaming Chaos. I'm not going to go into it, but it's a real bad example.
Everything I say on here is coming from the perspective of a 99% online only gamer, I don't enjoy single player games, beating a designed-to-be-beaten AI has just lost it's appeal. I play online all the time, the one and only problem i've come across in the last few years was when Activision suspiciously underpowered the PS3's MW2 servers, A whole 4 hours of downtime. oh and the fuckwitted MGS online system, although after a few mins of ballache that game was fucking awesome!!!
Recently i've been enjoying some lag free MAG beta, some UFC online, some MW2 (yuck) and a bit of LBP - with one of my previously staunch xbox360 supporting mates.
So what happens when the technically better machine, with the universally accepted better games, and far more capabilities, has pretty much identical online gaming service. Apart from the fact that it's free but doesn't "currently" support cross game chat. - Which in my opinion is the case.
What exactly is it that makes LIVE so much better than PSN???? Both have 99% trouble free online gaming (L4D2 launch ehem ehem), with minimal lag, in game chat, sure one of them is free, and one of them supports cross game chat, but essentially, from a users POV they're identical. From my experience LIVE has had more downtime in the last few years than the PSN too.
like I said in a recent rant, from what you guys tell me, i expect some kind of amazing god-like online experience from LIVE, but watching my nephew try to get into a game of Halo, after watching his MW games drop out a few times really brought the reality home.
They're fucking identical.
I firmly believe it's nothing more than a myth that LIVE is any better than PSN.
Content. Not taking sides. Just sayin'.
What exactly is it that makes LIVE so much better than PSN?
And I wouldn't say better but they are very different. On PSN I expect free and fun gaming. On Live I expect a butt ton of content. They're different.
RE: Gears. Sorry sex, but Uncharted is a copy of Gears, at least the shooter aspects are. I loved Uncharted for how much it wanted to be like Gears - the cover system is an EXACT copy, but not nearly as well implemented. For example, I lost count of the amount of times that I would be running about, press the button expecting Nathan to slide into cover, but instead he'd do a roly-poly into the wall and stand up in a hail of bullets. It's a good system, the best I've used outside of Gears infact, but no way near as good as the Gears system. I'm a fricken' Gears nut, and the reason I'm so obsessed is because I've never played a game that does third person shooting as well, and I love the third person perspective. It's had a few issues online to do with lag, but those issues have been more or less eradicated (in my experience, anyway). Oh, and the Gnasher is the most satisfying shotgun I've used in any game. Ever. I will get defensive about Gears because to me, no other third-person shooter has bettered its mechanics. And the only game to come close - U2, is the one that literally copied the mechanics as best it could.
It's annoying how the 360fanboys spouting shit about how LIVE is better does hurt the PS3's sales, because people who have not experienced either are told that opinion and make a purchasing decision based on that completely wrong information.
and, yeah, Bakewell is funny, but we're still cool.
You enjoy your Gears my friend and I'll enjoy my MAG, when it releases next week.
Until next time, Peace out my faceless internet friend.
Oh how I love to get in a 2 and 8 with you, SC.. :o)
Talkin' XBLA titles. PSN has some good little exclusives too but I just have a preference of XBL.
As for playing games you're right they aren't any different. Neither is better or worse.
You are a Sony fanboy drumming up support for the ps3 so if the xbox fanboys and the pa3 fanboys all quit do you think your silence would reduce ps3 players/supporters? Your theory makes no sense and this time you dont get a fanfare.
Also, I'd have to agree with Xzyliac with XBLA content being superior to PSN's selection. There are a LOT of titles on there, many of them downright fantastic (Shadow Complex and Geometry Wars 2 alone are just mind boggling). PSN is actually doing a lot better now then it was previously (Fat Princess, Super Stardust, and Flower are awesome games, plus they have PS1 games), but I really don't think it can compare (yet) to XBLA.
WTF am I talking about XBLA in a motion control thread? Gah, I got sucked right into Sexual's trolling.
And to whoever asked, yes, I'm back in full force, as I'm back at work now, been on Paternity leave for the last two weeks.
The story with my nephew is relevant, as all of us on here are talking from our personal experiences, that was my most recent LIVE experience and although it wasn't particularly bad (compared to the PSN) it was by no means better, in any way.
Xzyliac - come on man, this has already descended into LIVE gaming vs PSN gaming, it started out about the MoCo stuff! Don't go bringing up downloadable games too! I'm not big on my XBLA games, but PSN has some sick sick downloadable titles, I know that much for sure.
We all get tied up with the micro-differences but my point is that as far as a platform for playing games online, there is little to no difference between LIVE and PSN, sure they work differently, but neither have glaring faults, neither are perfect.
I just wish people (weebols) would stop telling potential buyers that LIVE is better.....
Can't we all just get along?
Which probably means they got shit to launch along with it so logically they decided to delay it.
Totally off topic but who cares? Not I said the wolf.
Chocs, you'll be pleased to know that at her Mother's house in Switzerland, they have a PS3. But you know how a daughter always listens to her daddy, so when I tell her 360 > PS3, she totally bought it ;o)
@Captain Bus and Bakewell - Yeah I'm loving it so far, he's 16 days old today, the coolest thing I've ever made! I manage to get some gaming in still, (The open MAG beta was the first week of my leave!) something about me sends him to sleep, so he sleeps on my chest while I lay on the sofa playing whatever I'm playing, sweet. Baby is certainly >PS3 despite playing while cuddling a fair bit, my hours are definitely down!
I can't wait till he's old enough to hold the spare controller and just mash buttons while I'm playing, although I may need to get a new controller relegate one to "chew toy," I'm anal about my controllers....
7 weeks and 4 and a half months! They're noobs too then eh, congratulations to you both too!!!
There's an amusing picture of my littleman here, a sight I'm sure you guys are used to...

(Excuse the vulgarity of the post/comments, this is where I learned my trolling skillz!)
Another fun filled day on the toid, see you guys tomorrow! (Unless I get really bored later)
Those Swiss know the score, PS3 FTW. ; )
Bit mean lying to her like that, but just like Father Christmas, one day she'll find out the truth. = )
Laters buddy, catch you tomorrow.
Also, I'm not buying this sex toy.
Hey, Sexualchocolate, despite our console preference differences, you seem like a cool guy. I plan on at least renting MAG when it comes out (I'm addicted to GameFly), we should play together sometime. My PSN ID is MrAndyDixon.
