Still a chance Diablo 3 could come to consoles, Wii probably excluded photo

At BlizzCon this week, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime and Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson were considerably more receptive about bringing Diablo 3 to consoles.  Until now, Blizzard has been steady in its dismissive tone towards a console port. In early July, COO Paul Sams said said it was “theoretically possible” but would “compromise ... the game experience.” Now, it appears that attitude has changed.

Here’s what Morhaime said in a recent interview with Shacknews:

Every game we have the discussion about which platforms make the most sense. As Diablo 3 takes shape, I think we'll do an evaluation. I think there is a pretty good argument to be made that that type of game might work very well on consoles. There might be some technical limitations though that we might need to get past.
Wilson was non-committal, but at least engaged the idea. He said that even though the control scheme isn’t compatible, a console Diablo would be “the natural choice.” Personally, I don’t see the problem. Yeah, the controls will have to be tuned, but Diablo isn’t well known for its diverse and robust button combinations and hotkeys.

What do you guys think? Is a console Diablo possible? Would you choose a console port of Diablo 3 over the PC version?

For me it's console or nothing. Not gonna upgrade my PC setup for this.

I have a 99.99% chance of buying the game when it comes out, but I doubt I will opt for the (theoretical) console version. Fallout 3? Sure, 360 FTW, but I will have my Diablo on PC, thankyouverymuch. Except if they dumb it down, which I hope they don't since they are not freakkin' Bethesda.

Oh god its that crappy ps1 port of daiblo all over again. my friend forced me to play that crap with him because he was to chicken to sneak into his brothers room and use the damn Pc to play the real game over netowrk lan.

Oh wait hold on while I open my spell "scroll menu" and find my spell while you can see worth crap on a blury low res crap graphics.

daiblo 3 at low ass 720p res (possibley upscaled to 1080p to make it look even more suck ass) with crap controls exactly what i don;t want to ever look at again.

Well that memory of playing the crap ps1 daiblo ruined my day.

I thought blizzard learned there leason back in 1998 with the suck ass starcraft and daiblo console ports and to never try it again.

I remember playing the first Diablo on my PS1 and I liked it. I enjoy having a BUTTON to walk instead of having to click every two seconds, or holding the mouse button ahead of my character. (so if battlenet becomes money driven, would a Diablo console game be pay to play online?)

YES PLZ!!! BRING IT FOR CONSOLES!!!

Come on guys, there is nothing wrong to have a choice from PC and your 360/PS3. Some people prefer having all gaming left to consoles since consoles already have keyboard, voice chat, ect ect.

In today's age consoles have reached PC level and best part you don't need to upgrade it to be able to play it at a nice setting + the most important factor... People cheat in PC :( This was my turn off on the old Diablo... Everyone using cheat/hacks to win = suckage.

I dont know, they are things that simply dont work on consoles, Im not saying that diablo is one of those, but the industry should put down this thing of "everything has to come to the 360", they are sacrificing a lot of good gameplay for the sake of it.
Lots of depth lost in this proces.

Meh, no thanks. I just don't think they'll be able to port the PC experience properly. More power to them if they can, though. I'll be getting it on PC either way.

A console Diablo is certainly possible, because they've done it in the past. But Diablo on the Playstation was AWFUL.

Nope, PC version for me please. The only people who would consider the console version as a better choice (are the people who don't have a choice). I know everyone doesnt have the newest computer on the market, but the PC experience is the way to go with Blizzard games. No reason to dumb it down for consoles.

Diablo 1 was on PS1, so I don't know why they're acting like it would be such a complicated thing to do.

I actually think a Wii version would be the best(next to PC). You use the nunchaku and move with the analog stick, and point and press A to use your spells/attacks. It makes perfect sense to me.

It a blizzard game they can run on toasters If you cant run this game or starcaft 2 OR WOW/ warcraft 3 then I really really pitty you for having such an ass PC and or using the MAC OS.

Diablo would suck on a console. D1 sucked on the PSX. I prefer the point click kill way of doing things...

The console versions of blizzard games usually suck.

wow where to start on this one. being a huge diablo 2 player for the best part of 6 years i can say with confidence that console port wont work unless it is required to use keyboard and mouse.
like someone else said up there about having to go to a menu to choose a spell and then cast it sounds like it would all have to be done while standing still. i dont know if everybody runs tanks or something but you cant stand still and expect to live very long in this game. lets suppose can can attach a spell to a specific button so you can walk/run and attack at the same time that still doesnt help. you have over 30 abilities at your disposal. i dont think even if you where to just use two or three you still have life and mana hot keys. i know 3 is going to use orbs for life but it will still have potions too.
and haveing to constantly click or hold down the mouse button to move.... get over yourself. every single game in existance you have to hold a button or hold a joystick to move.
some game types have made good ports like fps games but i still feel like dungon crawlers and rts need to stay on console.

oops last line of rant should say "some game types have made good ports like fps games but i still feel like dungon crawlers and rts need to stay on PC" not console.

Cube: Blizzard games are available on Mac.

Also the PS1 version of Diablo was awful, so no thanks I'll play this on PC.

Unless the gameplay is overhauled to the point of being revolutionary I'll probably be skipping D3.

Diablo was a blast, Diablo 2 was still a blast but felt a little stale. Diablo 3 will feel stale from the outset unless they mix things up a bit.

Diablo on a console is certainly 'feasible' from a technical perspective on a single player game. You would definitely need to tune (dumb-down) the controls.

But, how would you do multi-player? Diablo's longevity is tied to the multiplayer component, specifically Battle.net. I can't see Blizzard letting go of that aspect unless everyone on the console versions got to play non-ladder games which would really destroy any point of playing online. On the flip side, I can't see Microsoft letting anyone go online outside of the XBLive environment either.

So controls/graphics to me is the red herring in the argument. What about the multiplayer setup on consoles?

I'd get it for PS3 because it could/would have mouse, keyboard, and mod support. I wouldn't have to get a new PC.

i thought the D1 psx port was actually better, mostly because you could speed up the game......

The PSX Diablo was the only way I could play the game and I think it worked out fine. The contols didn't bother me none and I had a great time with it. The only sour point I can think of was that you couldn't break open barrels with a spell or a bow because the auto target wouldn't recognize them but other than that it was spot on.

But any way my point is that a console Diablo IS possable because they have done it before. It seems that Blizzard doesn't even remember making it. (Stupid elietest PC gaming douchbags)

It would be a dream come true. I don't play games on my PC anymore. I just like console gaming better. It makes me happy. lol. But Diablo 3 is one of those games I'd love to get my hands on, and the thought of playing it with buddies over X-Box Live, voice chatting and loot reaping with my pals... man, it would be way up on my must have games radar. no doubt.

Won't get it unless it's on the console. I don't go home anymore to sit at a desk and play games since I spent my 9+ hours of work time at a desk already. I want to sit on a comfortable couch/chair and game in a relaxed manner without any fear of further causing CTS.

Same for MMOs now as well. Console w/headphone or not going to play it.

Well, since my rig won't run it on PC, but I'd still love a chance to play the game, count me in if it comes to consoles.

PC all the way, but I'd check out the PS3 version if it was available. If I can lie on my couch and mindlessly mash buttons on my big ass LCD TV, versus slouch in my chair and mindlessly mash buttons on my comparatively miniscule LCD monitor, then the couch thing sounds more appealing.

Yes it is. Diablo without a mouse and keyboard was fully exemplified with D1 on the PSX. Shit don't work.

Well - if they take the time to do this correctly; I'd be really excited. I despise having to upgrade my computer every so often to keep up with PC games...

Otherwise, Baldurs Gate worked just fine on the Xbox - so why wouldn't Blizzard be able to tap into the console demographic?

ps3 is compatible with any usb keyboard/mouse i've assumed the same is true of the xbox but as i dont have one i can't really say. So they should make the game for consoles and just require them to use a keyboard/mouse not a big deal most of us have xtras lying about anyway (or is that just me)
