At BlizzCon this week, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime and Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson were considerably more receptive about bringing Diablo 3 to consoles. Until now, Blizzard has been steady in its dismissive tone towards a console port. In early July, COO Paul Sams said said it was “theoretically possible” but would “compromise ... the game experience.” Now, it appears that attitude has changed.
Here’s what Morhaime said in a recent interview with Shacknews:
Every game we have the discussion about which platforms make the most sense. As Diablo 3 takes shape, I think we'll do an evaluation. I think there is a pretty good argument to be made that that type of game might work very well on consoles. There might be some technical limitations though that we might need to get past.
Wilson was non-committal, but at least engaged the idea. He said that even though the control scheme isn’t compatible, a console
Diablo would be “the natural choice.” Personally, I don’t see the problem. Yeah, the controls will have to be tuned, but Diablo isn’t well known for its diverse and robust button combinations and hotkeys.
What do you guys think? Is a console
Diablo possible? Would you choose a console port of
Diablo 3 over the PC version?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Oh wait hold on while I open my spell "scroll menu" and find my spell while you can see worth crap on a blury low res crap graphics.
daiblo 3 at low ass 720p res (possibley upscaled to 1080p to make it look even more suck ass) with crap controls exactly what i don;t want to ever look at again.
Well that memory of playing the crap ps1 daiblo ruined my day.
I thought blizzard learned there leason back in 1998 with the suck ass starcraft and daiblo console ports and to never try it again.
Come on guys, there is nothing wrong to have a choice from PC and your 360/PS3. Some people prefer having all gaming left to consoles since consoles already have keyboard, voice chat, ect ect.
In today's age consoles have reached PC level and best part you don't need to upgrade it to be able to play it at a nice setting + the most important factor... People cheat in PC :( This was my turn off on the old Diablo... Everyone using cheat/hacks to win = suckage.
Lots of depth lost in this proces.
I actually think a Wii version would be the best(next to PC). You use the nunchaku and move with the analog stick, and point and press A to use your spells/attacks. It makes perfect sense to me.
IF you using linux though then I don't pitty you you are awsome.
The console versions of blizzard games usually suck.
like someone else said up there about having to go to a menu to choose a spell and then cast it sounds like it would all have to be done while standing still. i dont know if everybody runs tanks or something but you cant stand still and expect to live very long in this game. lets suppose can can attach a spell to a specific button so you can walk/run and attack at the same time that still doesnt help. you have over 30 abilities at your disposal. i dont think even if you where to just use two or three you still have life and mana hot keys. i know 3 is going to use orbs for life but it will still have potions too.
and haveing to constantly click or hold down the mouse button to move.... get over yourself. every single game in existance you have to hold a button or hold a joystick to move.
some game types have made good ports like fps games but i still feel like dungon crawlers and rts need to stay on console.
Also the PS1 version of Diablo was awful, so no thanks I'll play this on PC.
Diablo was a blast, Diablo 2 was still a blast but felt a little stale. Diablo 3 will feel stale from the outset unless they mix things up a bit.
But, how would you do multi-player? Diablo's longevity is tied to the multiplayer component, specifically Battle.net. I can't see Blizzard letting go of that aspect unless everyone on the console versions got to play non-ladder games which would really destroy any point of playing online. On the flip side, I can't see Microsoft letting anyone go online outside of the XBLive environment either.
So controls/graphics to me is the red herring in the argument. What about the multiplayer setup on consoles?
But any way my point is that a console Diablo IS possable because they have done it before. It seems that Blizzard doesn't even remember making it. (Stupid elietest PC gaming douchbags)
Same for MMOs now as well. Console w/headphone or not going to play it.
Yes it is. Diablo without a mouse and keyboard was fully exemplified with D1 on the PSX. Shit don't work.
Otherwise, Baldurs Gate worked just fine on the Xbox - so why wouldn't Blizzard be able to tap into the console demographic?
