Steve Wiebe to try again

Steve Wiebe to try again photo

If there is one thing that the documentary film King of Kong firmly established it is that Steve Wiebe wants desperately to hold the world record high score in Donkey Kong. The film portrayed him as the intrepid underdog to Billy Mitchell's corrupt and insipid gaming high score empire. Whether or not this is the case is something that is a bit up in the air, but what wasn't up in the air was the fact that Billy Mitchell still held the world record score for the classic game at the end of the film. Since then Wiebe has attempted four times to beat the score, but has failed.

Time to dust the joystick off, Wiebe is back. He will sit back down in front of the freakishly difficult Donkey Kong and try again. Wiebe has announced that he will be attempting to break the high score record on June 2 at E3 this year. What's going to be different this time? Well, he'll be under a ton of a lot more pressure because it's going to be televised live on G4. How embarresing will it be if he dies on the first barrell?

I really hope that Wiebe wins. The other guy is a complete dick who doesn't adhere to the rules half of the time.

Team Mitchell!
Haven't you heard... He's perfect.

Bill Mitchell: I've pointed out to Steve that he's the person he is today because he came under the wrath of Bill Mitchell.

Billy Mitchell: ...but competitive gaming, when you wanna attach your name to a world-record, when you want your name written into history, you have to pay the price!

;)

The biggest issue is that, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters made Billy Mitchell seem like a SUPREME jackass, even though he's only a SUPER jackass if you look into a bit of the back story. Regardless, it's complete and utter horseshit with the whole rules and how it's setup, as if you saw in the movie, Steve Wiebe was FORCED to go to the arcade to beat the record, because anything else = FAKE! Meanwhile, Billy Mitchell can submit a video with a bunch of pauses and breaks in it, and everyone of his cronies are like "BILLY MITCHELL BONAR! HE'S THE BEST!" And that video is somehow legitamite, but not Steve Wiebe when he sends in a video, or using a machine that's "magically" been tampered with, etc.

@funktastic

subtlety isn't one of your stronger points now is it?

also, i think that was the point of making it into a movie..

They actually threw out Mitchell's tape eventually, just like Wiebe's. Documentary filmmakers like to stretch the truth just a teensy bit.

Way to go Steve, using pressure to motivate yourself into beating the high score. You'll either become a geeky hero in video game lore, or die in shame and be forgotten in the cess pool of vaporware. As for the film isn't the guy taking gaming a litte too serious? I mean it's just King Kong. Also, I don't know why, but this film reminds me of a South Park episode...

The one with Bono and poo? That's because it was a parody of King of Kong.

The documentary was obviously fluffed to make Bitchell look like Satan, and Wiebe's "do no wrong" attitude was supposed to make you cry.

Mitchell wasn't as horrible as he was to Wiebe in the film. They actually met a few times and that "ditching Weibe at the diner thing" was fake. Even then, I still want Wiebe to win.

Mitchell had a chance to see the movie before release where he could have cried "fowl" and asked them to re-edit it, but he declined, saying something along the lines of that it was just another film or news clip he was in.

THE REAL KING OF KONG

Hi ////,
I don't think theres anything we can do.
I'm not familiar with the circumstances of your history with TG, but judging from my own, I can see how one can easily get screwed over in the name of politics and/or profit.
I actually have a copy of the game I played 9 years ago that was the "real" one that beat Billy's long standing record from the 80's.....NOT Webie. The whole KoK thing is built starting from a purposely manufactured lie.
I made 2 copies, one I sent to TG, the other I kept for myself....THAT I STILL HAVE.
Dwayne Richards and a few other notable people have seen this video from 9 years ago and agree theres no disputing it, it was all legit,
Seth Gordan intentionally lied. I was screwed out of my right full place in KoK.
I can't tell you how angry I am that an accomplishment I originaly did was simply taken away from me with intentional lies, handed over to someone else (they purposely lied to do it) so they could all profit! NOW THERE'S A MOTION PICTURE IN THE WORKS?! I got zero!
I'm the one who first actually beat Billys long standing score, can prove it and they hand it to Webie and B.S. the public with a so-called ..."documentary"?
Trying to explain the truth about the whole KoK thing to the general public is like trying to explain quantum physics to a taylors dummy. No one wants to hear it even though you can back up your argument with truth and videotape.
The public actually thinks KoK is a real life, real events documentary.
Both these Film people and TG now have a lot of $$$ tied up in the KoK sham.
