Steve Wiebe makes another attempt to topple Donkey Kong high score, falls short photo

Steve Wiebe emerged from last summer's docu-flick The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters looking like the quintessential geek hero after defeating bizarro-prince Billy Mitchell for his high score at Donkey Kong. Since then Mitchell has stepped up to the plate and reclaimed his place at number one, although Mitchell's honesty about the scores past and present has been subject to a great deal of speculation, especially since the documentary portrayed him as a shifty character.

Mitchell and Wiebe went head-to-head in a match last week set up in Las Vegas by arcade scorekeeping kings Twin Galaxies, but Wiebe couldn't defeat the prince of darkness. The actual high scores are maddeningly close -- Mitchell's is 1,050,200 and Wiebe's 1,049,100 -- but knowing Wiebe's calm demeanor, it seems likely he's a "if at first you don't succeed, try try again" kind of dude. I sure hope so, because as much as I know that King of Kong purposely set up a good vs evil dynamic in their portrayal of the two competitors for dramatic effect, I just don't like Billy Mitchell anyway. Who in their right mind can like a guy that wears American flag ties?

Mitchell is a douche. I know they douched him up extra for the movie, but you can just tell that inside he's all slimey and nasty and gross. Oh, and I just realized that his initials are BM. It suits him well.

Too bad Wiebe ddnt win. He's less of an ass than Billy "Bowel Movement" Mitchel.

It's not just the movie that makes Billy Mitchell look bad, he really does fail. He's got like (male gamer) groupies and shit, and he actually thinks he's somebody special or important because he holds a world record in an Arcade game.

Also, the Ties and the Hair. He fails at life.

During the event, Mitchell produced special bottles of his hot sauce to some of the 1,900 odd attendees, with a label reading “Steve Wiebe Attempts Donkey Kong World Record.”

Class act.

I LOVE this movie, but it definitely takes liberties with the facts and Billy Mitchell's characterization. For example, when this movie was shot, Billy Mitchell's world record had already been beaten by two people, one of which was actually Steve Wiebe himself. Really puts a damper on the movie.

I bet he sux at Halo though...

All nice and well that he's so good at Donkey Kong, but I'm not as impressed as when I see people like F4tality ( ok he's a bit of an egotripper too but he's got some sick ass skills )

I was howevere pretty impressed at Mitchells other great achievement, finishing pacman with only 1 life, eating all the dots on all 255 screens... but then again, in the end its not as if there's an unlimited amount of outcomes, its just a matter of studying by heart which route to take... Anyone with patience can do that, patience however gets you nowhere in most current-gen-games :-)

First off, Necrozen, that was the worst attempt at initial association that I have ever seen. Never in my life would I think that the letters BM would stand for Bowel Movement. Your just making shit up and trying to be funny about it. I mean really you couldn't think of something better than that. Secondly, both Necrozen and Eternal have terrible arguments against Mitchell. I can't tell that he is slimy and nasty by looking at him, in fact, the first half of the movie makes him seem like a pretty nice guy. And Eternal, you do realize that you are on a website that promotes video games and those who play them and you make fun of the guy for being a record holder in one of the most storied games in gaming history. The fact is that he has the record and Wiebe doesn't. I'm not saying that I am a big Mitchell fan, but just because a documentary portrays him as being shady doesn't mean that he is a douche.

@ Crawdaddy.

Were you watching the same flick as I was? My initial impressions, even before the shit that actually straight-up portrays him as a douche, was that Billy Mitchell was a slimy fucking douche-bag. He has the presence of a slimy used car salesman, and the charisma of a day old diaper.

You can attribute some of that to the way he was portrayed by the film-makers, but the rest of it was all him. He compared himself to the controversy surrounding the abortion issue for crap's sake! How big a douche do you have to be to do that?

As for your attempt at pointing out the irony in Eternal's statement, it fails because Billy Mitchell is a man who has built himself up around a totally trivial accomplishment. And don't kid yourself, while it took skill to accomplish what he did, it matters for shit outside of the gaming world.

To close this post out, I got the association right off the bat myself. BM. It's commonly used to describe one's personal processe of waste disposal, and makes perfect sense in the context in which it was used. It might be a bit low-brow, but given how much of a douche Billy is, it's so appropriate!

Really bro, you seem like you have a boner for Billy, despite your claims to the contrary. Why go to great lengths to defend a man you say you're not all that big a fan of? You're gonna look like a cock in front of the community for someone you don't give two shakes about? You're either a jackass, or you've got more invested in the guy than you'll admit...

@ Crawdaddy: Well, I've never even watched the doc in full. I just think he's a freak after seeing him featured in magazines and shit like that through the years.

He's just.....wierd, and he takes this shit way too seriously.

Wiebe, on the other hand, certainly wants the record, but I can't see him losing his mind over it like Mitchell will when Wiebe takes the record from him. I think Mitchell might commit suicide if Wiebe ever sets a record he cannot beat.

Actually BM is recognized by most people as bowel movement (especially in the medical community). It isn't really that obscure a reference.

Steve and Billy didn't go head-to-head at this event. In fact Billy wasn't even at the event. It was just Steve trying to break the record again. Unfortunately he didn't even break the 1mil mark in either of his 2 attempts.

I'm sorry, but any guy who'd ignore his kid screaming so he could break a record in a video game and who would do promotion for a documentary that totally skewed the facts of his life just to make someone else look like a villain is an ass. Mitchell isn't nearly the douche the movie makes him out to be, and Wiebe isn't nearly the hero he's painted as.

every appearance billy mitchell has made in any form of media (tv and movies, specifically) has just reinforced the fact that he's a douchebag who's all high and mighty on the fact that he holds the world record for a 27 year old arcade game

he was on mtv a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SKZxvDQryA

@Crawdaddy3 I work in the medical industry, and BM is most certainly the common abbreviation for bowel motion. So before you go off the deep end calling people out on 'bad associations' check you arent full of shit yourself.

As for the article, I agree, King of Kong skewed the facts slightly, but they certainly didn't make Billy wear that tie (for the last 20 years+), or say those things, they just showed the most outrageous things he did during filming. He was portrayed as a fuckwit, but he did do things that made him look that way.

I hope Wiebe does it, if only cause his wife obviously doesnt think he can.

And for fucks sake, anyone who thinks this game is old and doesnt hold a candle to the current games, go and get a world record, or just memorise the game and get through to the kill screen, and then come back here and talk about how pathetic it is. Yes its different to generic shooter 2008, but it still takes a lot of skill to be number 1 or 2.

Weibe is my hero, i fucking hate people who think there the king at something and go about waving there mullet about like some sort of victory dance. I saw The King of Kong and Weibe, even tho he didnt win came out looking more of a champion then that pussy Billy Mitchell. Regardless of how the documentary was shot to emphasize this.

As a parent I can say that I'll give anyone a gold medal if they drop whatever they are doing, no matter how much it means to them, every time their kid screams for their attention.

If you do that then first of all you'll never have a life and you'll hate living. Secondly your kid will become a spoiled little shit who doesn't respect other people and what they are doing.

The kid wanted his ass wiped, fine. He needs to sit the fuck down on the toilet and wait for his dad to finish breaking a world record... not scream like a shithead.

I wouldn't think they could edit any words into Billy's mouth in the movie. The guy is really a bad sport. What pissed me off the most is that part near the end of the movie. Where he's giving his final words on Steve. He's a poor sport and even his "diplomatic" statement about Steve makes him look childish.

No, they're just the only ones good enough to currently compete. Donkey Kong is maddeningly hard.

I know Billy Mitchell was supposed to be the "bad guy" in King of Kong, but he really seems to be a douche bag in real life. Over the years I've just heard so many ridiculous statements out of this guy's mouth--especially about his Pac-Man records.

I admit that Mitchell is a douche.

Anyone ever see this South Park episode though?

More Crap

Apparently blog commenters aren't the only one who caught that.

Still, despite the douchery, Mitchelle DOES have documented evidence of being a master gamer at many classic arcade games beyond Donkey Kong. He is, after all, the first to BEAT Pac-Man! You got to admit that it is quite the accomplishment.

But with all those accomplishments and records, it is kind of hard to NOT get a big ego from it. He's like a King of classic gamer title holders and is often sought, or even generously offers, assistance for others to get master records.

(See Doris Self. She will always be the Q*Bert Queen. Rest in Peace and may you find high scores in heaven.

Also, WHY is there no Doris Self wiki page? She should have one!)

But instead of being a fanboy leading, egotistic douche all the time, I LIKE the idea that there are people like Steve Wiebe who are after his prestigious throne and want to chip away at his list of titles.

Keep on fighting Wieve! KICK HIS ASS!

THE REAL KING OF KONG

Hi ////,
I don't think theres anything we can do.
I'm not familiar with the circumstances of your history with TG, but judging from my own, I can see how one can easily get screwed over in the name of politics and/or profit.
I actually have a copy of the game I played 9 years ago that was the "real" one that beat Billy's long standing record from the 80's.....NOT Webie. The whole KoK thing is built starting from a purposely manufactured lie.
I made 2 copies, one I sent to TG, the other I kept for myself....THAT I STILL HAVE.
Dwayne Richards and a few other notable people have seen this video from 9 years ago and agree theres no disputing it, it was all legit,
Seth Gordan intentionally lied. I was screwed out of my right full place in KoK.
I can't tell you how angry I am that an accomplishment I originaly did was simply taken away from me with intentional lies, handed over to someone else (they purposely lied to do it) so they could all profit! NOW THERE'S A MOTION PICTURE IN THE WORKS?! I got zero!
I'm the one who first actually beat Billys long standing score, can prove it and they hand it to Webie and B.S. the public with a so-called ..."documentary"?
Trying to explain the truth about the whole KoK thing to the general public is like trying to explain quantum physics to a taylors dummy. No one wants to hear it even though you can back up your argument with truth and videotape.
The public actually thinks KoK is a real life, real events documentary.
Both these Film people and TG now have a lot of $$$ tied up in the KoK sham.

Another game who was left out as well http://www.youtube.com/user/trtomkitinholloywood
