Stephen Colbert demoes the Ex-Xbox photo

Stephen Colbert is a funny guy who does funny things on his funny television show. This is one of those funny things. After hearing about Project Natal, Colbert did some top secret spy work and found out that Microsoft's next system was going to be the Ex-Xbox. You can see him actually playing it below. Now I just have to find how to get some of those threads that only smart people can see that he's talking about.

Not to get all serious when we're all having so much fun, but despite this being a joke it points to one of the major problems I have with Natal. It really isn't a better way to control games, and while Microsoft is contending that it's getting rid of a major barrier with the lack of a controller, I would say that setting up a camera in your house might be just as big a one. I think Colbert's skit points out some of the issues with how ridiculous this technology is for a large chunk of gaming. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome for some things, and looks to be an impressive piece of tech, but I can't help wonder how it's going to improve how I play games in any way.

There I've changed a post about The Colbert Report into a mini-rant on Natal. What? Cut me some slack, I'm only here on the weekends.

On the real, isn't Natal receiving the same criticisms as the Wii-mote? That system eventually proved itself so maybe this one will too. Who knows, this could be the next big thing. Plus it's optional so it won't "ruin" Gears 3, so stop complaining.

Whats the deal with his new haircut? I stopped watching Colbert every night in favor of Adult Swim again (I bounce back and forth) and I guess I missed it when he buzzed his head.

I totally agree with him about project NATAL. I will try it once it comes out to see whether or not it's good but I'm doubting it. At least with the Wiimote or Sony's thing you don't always have to move but with this motion controls aren't the optional controls or the usually uneeded action - e.g. Super Smash Bros. Brawl's shake smash or Super Paper Mario's point multiplier - They're the full on control method (and yes I am aware you can still use the old controller for now but I'm mostly thinking about the next generation.)

He got the cut when he went to Iraq for a week with the troops...I'll leave it up to you to visualize how he got it. Ah what the hell here ya go.

"Any child with a skateboard and the skill to ride a skateboard...no longer has to ride a skateboard." That made me chuckle. No need to go outside and actually skate in real life, now you can buy a $200 deck, scan it into the game and fake it in your living room. I know Natal will be cool for some stuff, but for myself I'd much rather do some of this stuff in real life than in my house in front of a TV.

GoldeGamerXero: I doubt any of the companies would go into the next generation with unworking tech. If Microsoft goes forward with Project Natal for their next system it would probably work at least as well as the Wii-mote.

Matthew, I know you're trying to be modest by saying some of the stuff Natal will do is awesome, but seriously, everything Natal has done so far and promises it will do, has been done by Eye Toy already. Even Milo is no different from PS3's Eye Pet, Nintendo DS's Nintendo Dogs, Dreamcasts's Seaman, or even Nintendo 64's Hey You! Pikachu. Especially after hearing from the multiple reports that Milo doesn't comprehend words, only facial expressions and tone of voice. Natal is just another eye toy, maybe better but I have yet to see them demo or even promise anything that hasn't been done before.

best part was the scream that came too early. anything that makes colbert really break character is usually gold. as for natal? proof will be in the motion-controlled puddin'.

Thanks for the Canadian mirror site!
(and it's about half way through clip 2)

... I don't actually get what the big deal is about Natal... Sony had the Eyetoy and PSEye, but the games simply don't sell (of course, they're also not being produced either... the PSEye is so totally neglected!). I don't know why MS seems to think that Natal will do any better than the Eyetoy did. Same concept, different price tag.

Gamers want good games... and so far the camera option/concept has only produced mildly entertaining party games or artsy games. :(

I would have been much more excited if they had showed an interesting game concept that actually utilized the camera in a new and innovative way.

The Wii got a lot of media attention when it was first announced, and Natal is getting a lot of attention now, but it seems like no one even knows about Sony's motion controller.

I think thats because when people see sonys they see the wii remote, they dont know they difference. When people see natal, they dont see an eyetoy because it wasnt as popular as the wii.

LOL good one.. whats with traditional controls anyway?.. whys everybody in industry against them now.

Probably takes some time to use it but once there is a lot of fun.. like everything, is not like you learn to skateboard, soccer, baseball in an hour, NO PAIN NO GAIN.

"A kid who has a skateboard, and the skill to ride a skateboard, no longer has to ride a skateboard." - Thank god I'm not the only one who has noticed!

How the hell is removing the controler a good thing!? If I'm gonna feel imersed by swinging a sword in a videogame, then I'm going to need something to hold to make me feel like I'm actually swinging a sword!

I think the Wii along with the WiiMotionPlus will be the best alternative for motion controlled gaming this generation. I'm still not so sure about the Sony tech yet. Will it require me to stand in front of the camera constantly? If not, then that might be the better alternative.

i have the best idea for controllers for Natal: just scan in your 360/wii/ps3

controllers. If that doesn't work Microsoft is a lying bastard.
