I had a lot of doubts about how Steel Battalion would make its transition form massive controller to the Kinect system with the newest entry into the series, Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor for XBOX 360. Those worries I had about losing the feeling of immersion in the game seem pretty well answered in the newest trailer, which details some of the games impressive Kinect control set up. What has me most intrigued is the included use of a standard controller for your moving and shooting in the game, which I personally feel like I'd get the most precision with.
Now tell me you don;t feel a bit a spent after watching that video. I doubt that they've gone over the all the possible controls in the game, and I've already forgotten what was mentioned first! Perhaps the whole thing will come naturally after a couple sessions, but I'm feeling pretty stressed out from all the multi-tasking that was on display. Not that I wouldn't mind slapping my crew around --but come on, don't I have to do enough of that at home?
Holy crap, that is awesome. I am so flag it's not all Kinect controlled since I've had uncomfortable delays and accuracy issues when using it for games like Gunstringer and Rise of Nightmares. Also, the psyche of crew mates playing a role is brilliant! Tanks aren't a one man job!
I gotta say... that looks like it could be one of the most legitimate motion games assemble. Putting the player inside of the tank through the game is a good way to suggest free mobility to the player without requiring the player to make "walking" movements like Rise of Nightmares. As long as the game recognizes those movements fluidly and the story is at least okay, this could be one of the best motion games.
somewhat nice implementation, but seriously? having to take your hands off the controller is such a bad idea while in the middle of a war just to use your binoculars.
Man this seems awesome. If the Kinect can actually accurately track everything well it seems like it will be a blast (pun completely intended). The original game had a lot of controls as well and it was damn fun. I hope they keep the original game's challenge in as well. Games like this are the closet consoles are likely to ever get to having a true mech "sim". I really wish the original Steel Battalion had hit off or that more games would have used that controller.
This is what I'd like to see out of kinect games. Personally I do feel that having to stand up and actually make motions to get the game to work ruins the immersion.
@fetusmilk
How exactly would the commander of one of these VT's keep his hands on the controls while having his body outside of the VT with his hands also on binoculars? I don't believe the expectation is for you to be popping out of the hatch amidst heavy combat. Do that and you should end up with the expected results. My point being, it makes sense in the context of the game.
@dtomek:
How do you know? Maybe he doesn't have any arms or legs. Maybe he's gonna die tomorrow. Maybe he's under court order to never buy a Kinect. Those are all possible reasons why he can never play it.
Dude, whatever. This looks amazing. You use a controller for the precision stuff, and Kinect for the ancillary things (of which the original Steel Battalion had many).
