Steam is now selling Prima in-game guides photo

Prima Guides and Steam have joined forces to sell in-game player guides. Guides are available for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Splinter Cell Conviction, Left 4 Dead 2 and Just Cause 2 with more coming down the line. They'll normally sell for $19.99 but are currently 50% off in celebration of the launch.

In other news, Prima is still trying to maintain a presence despite the fact that people can use the Internet to find guides and hints on various forums and even Youtube videos. For free.

For $2, I'll sell you a link to a site that features a lot of Game FAQs.

Given that we've seen commenters on this site decrying used games, can we expect to see people screaming about how sites that offer such info for free are bankrupting Prima?

in this day and age, it boggles the mind how these companies can still sell these overpriced paper-weights. i still laugh every time i hear the Gamestop clerk ask me if i "want to buy a strategy guide"?

I can almost understand printed guides for console games, assuming that you're going to use one it can be a pain in the ass to switch between the computer and the TV even if you've got your consoles next to your computer or you're using a laptop. But really, who's going to pay for an in-game guide for a Steam game when they could just use the built-in web browser?

Unfortunately I think we all know the answer: a lot of people.

If any of those suckers^Wpeople are reading the comments here don't bother with flea friend, I'll sell you the exact same link for only $1.50. I'll even wave the $4.00 shipping and handling fee if you would rather have the link delivered via email.

It's called GameFAQs, and it's made strategy guides obsolete for about 10 years now.

It costs around $1 for the ink and paper to print out a guide these days - use smaller font if you have to!

Am I the only one who just opens up a Browser window in-game and surfs GameFAQS/IGN Guides? Seriously, this would be a waste of my money and time. I never much liked the way Prima guides were broken up anyway.

@hpv; really? is it that difficult? What's the difference between using your laptop or a book??? That is ridiculous.

What about cell phones? They sell guides on the Android marketplace for like $5. Oh yeah, and GameFAQs.

HMV were flogging their unsellable stock of Metal Gear Solid 4 guides today for £2 a piece. I picked one up and they're pretty cool, reading it actually makes me want to replay the game on the hardest difficulty, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they're worth the £12.99 RRP.

I'll admit, I like actual paper strategy guides a lot. They're usually well organized and easier to read than their online counterparts, and I don't know why, but I just like having a physical copy of it. (Of course, I haven't bought one in probably five years because I'm a cheapass.)

Take away the physical aspect of it though, and I'll take my GameFAQs guides, thank you very much.

It's kind of sleazy that they would sell the online guides at the same price as the paper ones, given how much of the paper ones' price must have gone towards the actual paper, printing, shipping, etc.

The only strategy guides I've bought in the last decade are Pokedexes and that fucking sweet hardbound Fallout 3 encyclopedia. Interesting concept, but I wouldn't go for it for regular retail price unless the PDF came with a physical copy as well.

gamfaqs is the win. will that prima/brady guide help me when that inevitable dlc comes out? no, it won't.

i do love a good guide though. ff12's guide was great. but an online pdf guide is a rip-off when i can just copy.

I have to admit, I do like the idea of having the guide in Steam's overlay. Whenever I'm playing a game in Steam, all my other monitors freeze, meaning I can't scroll down in a FAQ without alt-tabbing and causing all kinds of nonsense. Being able to glance at a guide without all that sounds awesome.

Unfortunately, there's not enough awesome contained therein to make up for dropping $20 per guide. So my conclusion is thus: fuck that noise.

If they were smart, they would start selling integrated guides as DLC. That way, if someone really wanted to earn the "picked up 100 useless pieces of crap" achievement and are too lazy to look online, they can just pay for a quick guide.

I bought the Prima guide for Alan Wake. I wanted it because of the hardcover art book that came with it, which is absolutely FASCINATING. The last time I bought a guide before that was for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000, and I think that's because I bought it with a rebate that basically got it for me free and then saved another $10 or $20 on the game and joystick combo.

That said, the Alan Wake guide is surprisingly comprehensive. Compared to the online Dragon Age guide a friend of mine owned, the Alan Wake guide is lightyears ahead in terms of kickass. It's awesome, and appears to contain the full manuscript from the game, making it easier to read.

Normally I'd point out that there's actually little difference in the cost to the publisher between paper and digital copies of books, but books with lots of photos/color images are different. Those are more expensive to print than to put online, so yeah, I have to agree with you.

i remember last year when I was playing through fallout 3, whenever i got lost or didn't know where to find an item, i would just pull up the steam overlay and pay either the fallout wikia or orcidea's wonderful youtube channel a visit. that shit was free.

Most of the fusions between game producing companies have usually revealed reinforced potential for releasing new products. In one word, whenever I hear of such collaborations, I am pretty sure they must come up with something worth buying.
