Steam can cause spikes in retail game sales too photo

When people talk about the inevitable downfall of retail videogames from digital distribution, the one topic that always gets mentioned is undoubtedly Steam. However, Valve is here to set the record straight, and clear up what the company views to be a common misconception.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Valve's Doug Lombardi says that "A lot of the 'Steam is there to compete with retail' stuff is sort of sensationalized." Not only do Steam's free weekends lead to more players, and more digital downloads, but in the case of Left 4 Dead, the promotion also gave the retail PC and Xbox 360 versions of the popular game an increase in sales.

"[Steam is] about making the games better," says Lombardi. "It's currently a great marketing and promotions channel, and yeah we sell games over it and that's great, but whether people buy games at GameStop, or GAME UK, or on Steam, we get paid."

"So for us, whichever cash register you want to pay at, that's fine." Love the honesty, and you know what, it's all about consumer choice in the end.

VALVE SAID IT THEY LIKE MONEY OH GOD HALF LIFE 6 2010 PEOPLE MILKING.

I still (despite my craptactic PC) say PC gaming using STEAM is the No.1 way to game. And I like how they made three characters to semi-promote it all that are NEVER seen for anything ever.

Oh my god. this is horrible. How could you betray us Valve. we thought you were a not-for-profit organization all these years and you're actually a business?!

Then again steam does things retail simply can't or won't. This weekends 2k huge game pack deal for 54 bucks, for example. As long as steam keeps beating retail's prices I see no reason to buy the games anywhere else.

Hey, they need an income too, and they deserve it too.

Digital distribution causes spike in retail sales? How is that possible? If a product is cheaper than another product, naturally people would buy the cheaper product and less people would buy the more expensive one. Why would you buy a more expensive product over the cheaper product?

Some people like to have a physical copy of a game, I know I do.

That's an old version of the L4D box art. It's a right hand instead of a left one.

Case in point: Fallout 3 sale on Steam this weekend, and I now has it.

Long live the king!
