Stealthy or wild: SEGA makes reserving Alpha Protocol hard photo

SEGA isn’t making the choice of where to reserve Alpha Protocol easy. Yesterday, the publisher of Obsidian’s espionage RPG announced that GameStop and GameCrazy would be carrying two unique downloadable weapon packs for those ready to lay down the cash for a pre-order. One pack is intended for the stealthy player, the other for the frontal assault type of person.

GameStop will be offering the hardcore shoot’em up pack. It comes with grenades, an assault rifle and a shotgun. GameCrazy will have the stealth pack. This one comes with silencers, tranquilizers, and mines.

If you’d like to know more about either pack, hit SEGA’s blog.

Making a choice for a game before making a choice in the game before even seeing the game in action for over fifteen consecutive seconds seems rather silly to us, especially when considering the statistics bound to the guns. What the hell does "+1s all over mean?" We can only assume that magic modifier means it's a totally awesome gun.

While this is kinda lame. I would probably end up going for power and get the shoot 'em up pack due to fond memories of Paul Giamatti. But it would be nicer if I got some sort of gameplay to even see wtf this game is. . .

It's hard to imagine what benefit releasing - most likely mild, though superficially dichotomous - differing pre-order bonuses could have for Sega. Essentially they're divying up their audience amongst "preferred" retailers, while giving no clear boon to either store. Without having some sort of contract in place that gives one or the other a CLEARLY superior pre-order bonus, how could this possibly do anything but push numbers around?

Unless they're hoping that by offering a "variety" of bonuses, consumers will perceive this as greater option and therefore be more likely to pre-order? Still a stretch, though I'm having trouble seeing anything else.

Ok... this whole pre-order bonus nonsense has gone too far.

I'll just find a hack to get both weapon sets. HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?

Hmmm, this game just hit my radar. Looks cool.

Won't pre-order but will probably pick up at some point...

Guns? I only see one big assault rifle... oh, I see what you did there. Very amusing.

That's kind of dumb. Not to mention I've never seen a GameCrazy in my life.

.....Or you can just wait until the game releases and get all the codes off the internet.
yeah I think I'll go with that option.

That's bullshit.
Not only people will have a bonus in-game(that they used real cash to acquire) but they will have a bonus they don't even know if they will use.

You guys are acting like this pre-order thing is a deal breaker for you even buying the game, when I'm sure more than half of you won't buy it, let alone pre-order it. I know I won't. It's a BONUS, they don't have to give you anything at all. Leave it to the internet to bitch about something free.

I'm just wondering what they'll be offering Europe. If they decide to shaft us, as companies are wont to do, I doubt it'll be too big a deal. I can't see any kind of advantage being provided, and even if there is, I'd imagine there'll be a way to match/counter that advantage further down the line.

I live in NJ and I have only ever seen one GameCrazy, and it's nowhere near where I live.

So yeah.

But the game looks great!
