Stealth PS3 firmware v3.01 update is live (Update) photo

It's only been two weeks since Sony updated the PlayStation 3's system software to v3.00 -- with a few hitches. Tonight, they threw up a surreptitious update under cover of darkness, bringing the console's firmware to v3.01. The new update seems to have gone live shortly after midnight EDT on September 15th; it took me about 25 seconds to download and around four minutes to install.

We don't yet have any official word from Sony on what the v3.01 update does; presumably, it fixes the v3.00 issues that they were looking into, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear something concrete.

[Update: A newly minted post on the PlayStation.Blog explains that the v3.01 update, which is apparently optional, "improves system stability during use of some PlayStation 3 format software" -- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, perhaps? Curiously, there's no mention of problems with DualShock 3 controllers. And by the way, for those asking, the obnoxious gray bar friends list sadly remains unchanged. -Samit]

[Update 2: Apparently, the What's New option came with v3.00, and I just didn't look hard enough in the menus. The article has been updated to reflect this fact. In addition, Director of PSN Operations Eric Lempel confirmed in a reply to a comment on the PS.Blog post that the update fixes issues that people were having with Uncharted. Finally, I wonder how many more times I can use the word "update" in this article. -Samit]

Here's to hope that it fixed the issues. I really want to be able to use my PS3 again.

... turning off the What's New on launch was actually in version 3.0 - it was one of the first things I looked for! (Hate that What's New useless waste of space).

(and I saw Takeshi's PSN comment about 3.01 and sure enough, there it was! Thanks Takeshi!) :)

The option to display "what's new" at startup was already in 3.0. I've had it disabled because it would cover up the fancy new dynamic themes until I changed menus.

FYI Dtoid: There's a free Afrika zebras theme on the JPN store and a Wipeout HD/Fury theme on the EU store, also free.

I wouldn't have expected more from a 3.01 update. I wonder if the people who had problems with Uncharted before are now safe to play it (FYI, I personally didn't have any problems whatsoever)

You're welcome Elsa.

That's it?

The gray bars need to go Sony. Get on that.

The grey bars are fine. They just need to put some more information in them to make them a worthwhile addition. Oh, & give us the option of smaller icons on the XMB (not that the larger ones particularly bother me).

I also turned off the autostart to "What's New" option.

Good I was hoping for 10 more iterations of the Playstation Store. Here's hoping when it boots up, there will be a laser light show, and no freaking game boot jingle/logo. That wouldn't piss-me off at all.

Here's hoping there aren't 98 updates before v4.

Just great! Because two gamers had an issue with Uncharted and one bought a cheap controller, now they drop an update to an UPDATE, that knowing my terrible luck will probably cause my PS3(which was unaffected by the previous update) to implode or open some portal to a chaotic evil nether nexus that will spew zombie-werewolf-lava-gerbils from the USB ports!

*sigh*

I wish they had left well enough alone...

*heads to my bunker*

See yall in 200 years.

I'm glad they said they are looking into the friends list thing but wouldn't it suck if Sonys plan was to make Premium avatars change to look of the bar to a related theme, like how you can change the area around the avatar on MSN messenger but they scrapped it cus we bitched about change?

The grey part is crap yes but if you were able to customise it it would be a whole new story, it would make people stand out on a friends list instead of just being a name and a picture on a list.

Also, how many wrong sides of the bed did you wake up on today zombielifcoach?

im just curious what they changed that made uncharted screw up? why would games stop working because of an update? and why would it do it with 1 game? just doesnt make sense. and shouldnt the update be with uncharted and not the psn? so confused.

@Kaden101 I guess we're the only 2 that don't mind the gray background. I guess I like reading what games my friends are playing, regardless of my background for my XMB

The controllers that stopped working are counterfeits. Sony shouldn't need to support them. In fact, they probably did it on purpose. Sucks for those that bought them already, but at least no more can be sold.

I know a few people have mentioned this in the comments on previous articles but the editors don't seem to have taken notice.
